For 2012, Ram Truck will expand its model lineup by adding the new, top-of-the-line Ram Laramie Limited.

Laramie Limited is designed to meet the high expectations of affluent pickup truck buyers looking to combine capability with elegance.”

Featuring premium materials, such as full-leather seating, piano-black interior components and under-stated exterior badging, Ram Laramie Limited offers a refined luxury alternative to the popular southwestern-themed Ram Laramie Longhorn edition pickup.

“The launch of the Ram Laramie Longhorn edition gave us a boost in the ultra-premium pickup segment and exceeded our expectations,” added Diaz. “Ram Laramie Limited offers customers an even wider selection of luxury models. We expect a lot of interest in the Laramie Limited.

The new Ram will make its debut at the 2012 Chicago Auto Show, which opens to the media on Wed., Feb. 8.

Exterior
Ram Laramie Limited gets a body-color front fascia with fog lamps and a matching, painted rear bumper. (Ram Laramie Limited 2500 and 3500 models in white and silver exterior colors get chrome front and rear bumpers.) The Laramie Limited’s chrome grille surrounds billet inserts that are featured on Ram Sport models. Understated chrome accents include body-side molding, mirrors, door handles and tubular side steps.

The Laramie Limited’s body side has a clean, “street truck” look and eliminates the traditional HEMI®, Cummins and Ram model line badges.

Tailgate badging includes the chrome Ram’s Head logo and a small italicized block-letter “Limited.”

Ram 1500 Laramie Limited shares 20-inch forged aluminum wheels with the Ram Laramie Longhorn. Polished surfaces are accented with painted silver pockets. Heavy Duty models feature 17-inch fully polished aluminum wheels. Wheel centers are embossed with the Ram brand name.

The Ram 1500 Laramie Limited is available in six exterior color choices, including: black, bright silver metallic, bright white, deep cherry red pearl, mineral gray metallic and true blue. Ram Heavy Duty models are available in black, bright silver metallic, bright white and mineral gray metallic.

Interior
The 2012 Ram Laramie Limited Edition features a modern, luxurious interior.

A full-leather cockpit with dark slate Natura Plus leather seats and engraved details lend the Ram Laramie Limited an unmatched level of sophistication and style.

Contrasting medium graystone leather piping provides seat-edge emphasis. Additional accents are created along either side of the piping by medium graystone deck-seam stitching.

The Ram Laramie Limited’s cavernous double-stacked center console is topped with a soft, double French-stitched full-leather lid.

In addition to 100 percent leather seat coverings, Ram Laramie Limited gets a premium leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter -- console mounted on 1500, column mounted on 2500 and 3500 Heavy Duty models. Accent medium graystone X-stitch detailing sets off both the steering wheel and shifter.

Door trim front and rear also is wrapped in premium leather. Leather armrest uppers are further accented with the same dual French stitch used on the center console lid and instrument panel.

Ram Laramie Limited editions receive remote LED lighting at the inside door handles and a full-length light that illuminates the truck’s multi-function lower map pockets, front and rear.

The dash features a center stack trimmed in high-gloss piano-black. Liquid graphite side bezels and bright chrome vent rings complete the center stack’s detailing. Piano-black finishes also are used in the door panels and are trimmed in bright chrome.

Ram Laramie Limited’s gauge cluster is accented with pad-print chrome rings that share the high-end appearance of a gentleman’s watch and include the imprinted message: “Designed in Detroit.” Gauge needles are finished in liquid graphite.

A liquid graphite glovebox spear with pinstriped details and black and chrome “Limited” badge complete the dash.

Beneath the dash is soft foot-well lighting, providing both a functional and aesthetic interior enhancement.

Passengers also enjoy solid dark slate premium berber carpet floor mats with medium graystone accent stitching. Rear flap-closure seatback map pockets with modern chrome Ram-lettered detailed metal buckles also are unique to Ram Laramie Limited. For entry and exit, brushed-silver Ram-branded door sill plates resist scuffs and add visual appeal.

Other Features
Ram Laramie Limited also is equipped with a navigational radio, remote start, back-up camera, power adjustable pedals with memory, heated steering wheel, front ventilated and heated seats and rear heated seats.

Ram Laramie Limited will be available in 1500 (1/2-ton), 2500 HD (3/4-ton) and 3500 HD single- and dual-rear-wheel (1-ton); Crew Cab and Mega Cab; four-wheel drive and two-wheel drive; and short- and long-wheelbase models.

Everyone driving an automobile is aware of the danger of getting hurt if they are involved in an accident.

What a vast majority of the people do not realize is the fact that there are just as grave dangers inside their automobiles as there are outside.

There are many toxins released inside the car that can cause serious damage if one is not careful.

The braking pads, clutch plates and some other parts of older vehicles contain asbestos.

Exposure to asbestos can lead to mesothelioma and other cancers. What is even more worrisome is that the symptoms of the disease do not become apparent up to ten or fifteen years after exposure.

However, if one owns an older model and enjoys working on their vehicle and changing brake pads, then appropriate protection should be used.

The remnants of flame retarding substances known as PBDEs frequently accumulate on the windshield of the car.

They are added to clothing and other items to protect against fires and enter the vehicle through vents. It is essential that the windshield is cleaned regularly as breathing in PBED is especially hazardous to pregnant women. Exposure to PBDEs is linked to birth defects, premature births and learning disabilities.

Car knobs and doors are frequently coated with chlorine and bromine. This is done so that if a car catches fire due to an accident or some other reason, the inside is protected against it and the passengers are safe until rescued.

Unfortunately, being exposed to these chemicals can cause thyroid issues and has been linked to ovary and prostate cancer.

Being exposed to bromide can cause learning disabilities. As a safety measure, make sure to wash hands after exiting the car and do not allow children to put fingers into their mouths after touching the car parts.

Another dangerous toxic substance commonly found in cars is benzene. Seat coverings and dashboards contain benzene and the chances of exposure increase on hot days as the dashboard starts to heat. One can even detect a faint burning smell during the warmer summer days.

While this smell is usually mistaken for car odor, it is better if one drives with the windows rolled down for a short while and allows the fumes to escape.

The danger associated with breathing in the tailpipe exhaust of cars has been well documented. While car companies are always looking for ways to minimize dangers associated with the different chemicals released by cars, there is plenty of room for improvement. In the meanwhile, it is best to be cautious.

Mesothelioma and other cancers and dangerous diseases can be kept at bay if one is aware of these dangers and uses their vehicle with care.

The Green Machines You Won't Have Seen

What with the environment on everyone’s conscience these days, it’s refreshing to see that even gas-guzzling cars are getting a makeover.

And with the price of gas hardly looking like it’s about to take a nose dive, it’s all the more important for consumers to be given a more eco (and pocket) friendly alternative.

This is old news though. Every man and his dog has a Prius, and biodiesel is being sold at pumps around the world. We're more interested in the new contenders in the arena of green motoring.

So read on to discover the newest - and most exciting - developments in the world of carbon-friendly cars…

1. SEAT
Spanish manufacturer, SEAT, has recently unveiled its plans for a plug-in hybrid car as well as a full electric car, too.

TwinDrive – the company’s new plug-in hybrid is forecast to hit the car showrooms in just over three year’s time, in 2015, and its full-on electric version which will produce absolutely zero emissions is due to go on sale in 2016. And the main news about these two eco developments is the fact that both models are being based on models already in the SEAT range – in fact, the TwinDrive system is being developed in the Leon hatchback.

As for the first totally electric SEAT, this is being based around the Altea XL compact MPV.

If you’re interested to find out more, make sure you get over to the Geneva Motor Show in March 2012 when the TwinDrive version of the new Leon will be presented for the first time.

2. Zoleco
We won’t point and laugh at you if you’ve never heard of Zoleco before, in fact we wouldn’t be surprised as it’s very early days for this car manufacturer.
Zoltan Bod, the man behind the brand, has designed what could easily be classed as the craziest eco car out there.

Merging a retro-style 1970s body which almost looks like it has little wings (for images, see here) with up-to-the-minute eco technology means the Zoleco sports car certainly stands out from the crowd.

Fitted out with a regular engine and a three-cylinder turbo engine that’s linked up to your standard five-speed manual gearbox, the eco-ness of the car is actually more down to the look of the car than the actual mechanics.

And, according to Mr Bod, it’s all because the streamlined shape of the body would produce a tiny 8.2hp for the car to reach a top speed of 65mph.

The crazy-but-cool car shape should also produce a 50% reduction in drag compared to that of a standard car, which as any car expert can tell you is good for fuel consumption. What’s more, this technology coupled with a thermal energy recovery system and advanced braking systems, means the Zoleco sports car might not be as crazy as it looks, and initial figures are showing it could offer an 82% drop in gas guzzling.

Sadly, don’t expect to see it on a forecourt anytime soon as it’s still very early days for the Zoleco and much more investment and testing needs to take place before we can see this funky model go into production.

3. Land Rover
You’d be forgiven for thinking this big beast of a vehicle could ever be deemed as eco, but over in South Africa things are changing. Axeon and Jaguar Land Rover have been working in partnership to produce a completely electric version of the Defender that is used in game parks.

The electric Defender has been specifically designed for game parks because of the benefits of reducing noise pollution in an environment stocked with endangered species.

With a reduced noise output, it will be much easier for wardens to patrol the park without scaring the animals in the electric Defender. Reduced noise means rampaging elephants are less likely, and in turn there should be lesser need to call the Land Rover Insurance call centers for claims!

The difference between the electric Defender Land Rover and other electric cars is that the battery pack has been designed to fit in the engine bay as opposed to the floor or the car.

This means the distance between the bottom of the vehicle and the ground isn’t compromised and therefore means it’s an ideal car for uneven and wet terrain like game parks.

When tested, the electric Defender was shown to be able to cover around 80km with a reserve distance of 20km on one battery charge – more than enough for a regular game park patrol.

In Australia, insurance for your luxury car is undoubtedly going to cost more than typical car insurance, simply because your car costs more to fix or replace.

While your age, driving record and storage plan for your car will of course be taken into consideration (among the other standard criteria) the premiums for your insurance will more likely be based on the value of your car and the location you live in, since it is more likely to be stolen than say a beat-up Honda from 1993.

It’s also no secret that luxury cars are expensive to repair. Should you get into an accident, your premiums will obviously be higher because the cost of repairing your vehicle is more expensive.

Since your car will also pretty much be a high-speed “zoom machine,” several insurance companies will not include accidents due to excessive speeds in your premiums, so you will need to check this out when buying. Also note that the faster your car goes, even if you do not drive at its full capacity, the higher your premiums will be.

As always, you’ll need to shop around for the best deal and obtain a few car insurance quotes for your luxury vehicle before going ahead. If you’re so rich that you don’t even care, you can ask the dealership to organise insurance for you, but you’ll still need to pay attention to what’s included and what’s not.

Luxury Car Tax

In Australia, if you are buying a vehicle that is over the current threshold of $57,466, you are buying a luxury car. If this is the case you are liable for the luxury car tax, which is charged at 33% of the net price of your car that is over the current threshold limit.

For example, if Joe buys a car for $90,000, he is only taxable on $32,534 of the total cost. Most luxury car dealerships will automatically include the luxury tax in the sale price of the car, however make sure you double check this when you buy.

Also bear in mind that if you are purchasing the car for business purposes, you will be able to claim back all or some of the GST in your annual tax return, but you won’t be able to claim back the cost of the luxury tax. Sorry folks.

How do you get around this tax?

Unfortunately, there is no way if you plan to buy a luxury car, however, there are some exceptions to the rule where you will not have to pay luxury tax, including: if you buy the car at a private sale, if it is an emergency or commercial vehicle, if it was sold by retail or imported into Australia before July 2000 or if it is has been modified to transport a disabled person in a wheelchair.

If you’re still unsure whether your car qualifies for the luxury tax you will need to check with the tax office or with your accountant. Of course, if you want to avoid the tax completely but still purchase from a dealer, you can consider buying a luxury vehicle where the price is below the threshold.

Benefits of Luxury Car Insurance

Because you’re paying so much, luxury car insurance does come with extra perks and can include things like guaranteed repairs with your choice of repairer, replacement vehicles (or cover for the cost of hiring one) if your car is damaged or stolen, higher no-claim bonuses, installed car phones, free “one-off” claims for replacements on things like windows or lights, travel expenses if your car is affected by damage or theft while you’re away and claims on other contents inside the car if it is damaged or stolen.

Not all providers will offer benefits like this, so it’s up to you to assess what’s included in your quote.

Kia Rio and 20th Century Fox new animation movie! – What if Kia Rio meets Rio animation characters of 20th Century Fox?

The 2012 Kia Rio debuts at the 2011 New York Auto Show today, sporting brand new bodywork, Kia's new direct-injected four-cylinder and the company's Idle Stop and Go, or stop-start technology. Kia claims the combination of direct fuel injection and stop-start means the 2012 Rio will pull down 30 miles per gallon around town and 40 mpg on the highway.

On top of that, the new Rio should be a peppy little beast, knocking down 138 horsepower from its 1.6-liter four cylinder. Switching the ratios will be either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic. Idle Stop and Go is an all-new feature for any Kia – when the car is stopped and the brake depressed, the computer kills the engine to save gas. When the brake pedal is released, the engine fires back up and away you go.

Outside, the Rio has been treated to a full re-skinning, taking on the high-shouldered, wedge-shaped look of the rest of the Korean automaker's lineup. Out front, the Rio gets a slightly slimmer version of the company's familiar grille, re-shaped to better integrate with the car's headlights.

The 2012 Rio has also grown to 171.9 inches in length and 67.7 inches in width, but sits lower than the outgoing model. Kia claims that, despite its increased dimensions, the widened stance and use of high-tensile steel in the car's construction makes for significantly better ride and handling over the old Rio.

The 2012 Kia Rio will be available in three trim packages, starting with the LX, which gets 15-inch steel wheels, body-color door handles and side mirrors.

Above that, the EX model rides on the same wheels as the LX, but gets power mirrors and locks and keyless entry. The top-level trim will be the SX, which sports 17-inch wheels, fog lamps, LED daytime running lights, a dual-tip exhaust and heated mirrors sporting turn signal repeaters. The five-door Rio5 SX, meanwhile, will be upgraded to projector headlights.

For 2012, Chevrolet Cruze models with the 1.4L turbo and six-speed automatic transmission will get 2 mpg better fuel economy.

The Cruze Eco with an automatic transmission will deliver as much as 39 mpg on the highway compared with 37 mpg for the current model, Chevrolet said Wednesday.

The most popular 1.4L turbo/six-speed automatic will get 38 mpg compared with 36 mpg for the current model. A lower axle ratio for the 2012 models enables the approximately 5 percent increase in highway fuel efficiency for Cruze.

Cruze Eco with the standard six-speed manual transmission remains the most fuel-efficient gas-powered/non-hybrid vehicle in America, with an EPA-rated 42 mpg on the highway.

Also for 2012, a feature package containing Bluetooth phone connectivity, USB port, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, cruise control, leather-wrapped steering wheel and a leather-wrapped shift knob will be standard on 1LT and Eco models. These features were part of the $525 Connectivity Plus Cruise option package on 2011 models. The option was ordered by 90 percent of American customers.

“Chevrolet is committed to responding to what customers want and making it easier for them,” said Rick Scheidt, vice president of Chevrolet marketing. “Adding these previously optional features streamlines the ordering process and answers the call of what our customers told us should be standard.”

Cruze, which was the best-selling small car in the United States in May, is Chevrolet’s best-selling nameplate around the world, with global sales of more than 250,000 in the first four months of 2011.

“Fueled by a successful launch in the United States and continued growth in China, Chevrolet Cruze is proving to be the right car at the right time,” Scheidt said “Fuel economy is the top reason customers buy a compact and the Cruze’s greater efficiency for 2012 makes it all the more attractive.”

When the Chevrolet Camaro Convertible sets the pace for the 2011 Indianapolis 500 this Sunday, it will showcase a top built to last a lifetime, operate worry-free and maintain the appearance of its Coupe sibling.

To assure long-term durability, the convertible top underwent extensive testing during development, being opened and closed more than 22,500 times – three times more than would be expected in a typical 10 years of use. Some of those cycles were performed in extreme conditions; temperatures ranging from minus-22° F to 170° F and humidity of up to 95 percent.

“This past winter we even had our engineers driving 80 of these convertibles back and forth to work every day here in Michigan,” said Al Oppenheiser, Camaro chief engineer. “They had to open and close the top five times each day no matter what the weather was like.”

Every Camaro Convertible undergoes a water test as it completes assembly in Oshawa, Ontario. In addition, vehicles are randomly chosen to undergo an eight-minute water test at the assembly facility in Oshawa and at an identical facility at the GM Proving Ground in Milford, Michigan. More than 7,200 gallons of water are hurled at the car in a hurricane-like downpour at a pace of 900 gallons per minute.

Addressing another aspect of interior comfort, Camaro Convertible’s three-layer top includes an acoustical liner made of rubber sandwiched between an acrylic square weave outer fabric and an inner reinforcing cotton layer.

Engineers use a sophisticated human-ear mimicking device called the Aachen Head to measure noise levels. According to recent GM road test data, the Camaro Convertible achieved a better interior quietness acoustical rating than the Ford Mustang in interior quietness.

“For many buyers, a Camaro Convertible can be a collector car, something they might keep for generations. So we made sure the tops would retain their quality for a long, long time,” said Oppenheiser.

“There is great value in a convertible with the original top.” Oppenheiser knows the needs for car collectors well. He personally restored a 1969 Camaro Convertible several years ago.

Consistent with its coupe-like performance dynamics, the Camaro Convertible offers the looks of the Camaro Coupe when the top is up. The five bow roof design provides a smooth, taut and carefully tailored appearance that retains the sleek roofline of the coupe.

Unlike other convertible models in the segment, the Camaro top latches with a single, convenient handle located at the center of the windshield header. Once the latch is turned to the open position, the push of a single button lowers the windows and activates the top, which completes its cycle in about 20 seconds.

It gives the impression of having just emerged from the shop, freshly painted, on its way to the first rollout on the race track. The Audi A1 clubsport quattro is a one-off vehicle built to the limits of technology for breathtaking dynamics. Audi is presenting the showcar in Reifnitz, in the Austrian state of Kärnten, at the Wörtherseetour 2011. The 30th edition of this major meeting for Audi, Seat, Skoda and VW fans takes place from June 1 - 4, 2011.

The heart of the Audi A1 clubsport quattro is a classic Audi gasoline engine – a five-cylinder unit displacing 2.5 liters with turbocharging and direct fuel injection. Compared with the version used in the Audi TT RS and RS 3 Sportback on which it is based, the output of the TFSI has been increased dramatically to 370 kW (503 hp) and 660 Nm (486.79 lb-ft) of torque. Maximum power is available between 2,500 and 5,300 rpm.

The turbocharger, intercooler, admission tract and the exhaust line have been systematically tuned for high performance. As on the Audi A4 DTM, the tailpipe is located on the left flank, just in front of the rear wheel.

Another area where the A1 clubsport quattro shines is its overall weight of just 1,390 kilograms (3,064 lb). The powerful engine catapults the car from 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 3.7 seconds. From 0 to 200 km/h (124.27 mph) takes just 10.9 seconds, while the car goes from 80 to 120 km/h (49.71 to 74.56 mph) in fourth gear in just 2.4 seconds.

A six-speed manual transmission and quattro permanent all-wheel drive, both taken from the TT RS and enhanced, deliver the power to all four wheels. Top speed is governed at 250 km/h (155.34 mph).

The Audi showcar rolls on 255/30 low-profile tires mounted on 19-inch alloy wheels with a unique turbine design. Sitting behind the wheels are large, internally ventilated disc brakes. Up front, six-piston calipers grab perforated carbon fiber-ceramic discs. Large steel discs are mounted on the rear axle. The coilover suspension of the A1 clubsport quattro features adjustable compression and rebound damping.

Dynamic and brawny: the exterior
Sporting a very dynamic appearance and an exquisite finish, the showcar makes no secret of its potential. The body has a Glacier White matt paint finish, with accents provided by many add-on parts. The roof arch in high-gloss black supports a roof made of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP), and the four rings at the front of the car are solid aluminum.

Large, split air intakes with carbon struts are integrated into the distinctively modified front skirt. The single-frame radiator grille sports a black honeycomb design, and the headlights feature matted clasps with a red “wing.” Heat from the engine compartment is dissipated via two large air outlets in the hood.

The front fenders, the doors and the rear side panels of the Audi A1 clubsport quattro have been widened by a total of 60 millimeters (2.36 in). They form horizontal “blister” edges, like those found on the Audi Ur-quattro. Air outlets are integrated into the rear ends of the fenders, and the newly designed trim strips on the sills are made of exposed CFRP. Sleek side mirrors are reminiscent of the Audi R8 high-performance sports car.

The rear of the showcar is dominated by the roof spoiler, which features a double wing to provide for sufficient downforce. Darkly toned rear lights and a large, closed diffuser hone the rear view of the A1 clubsport quattro.

Designed as a road vehicle for the race track, the showcar has no rear seat. In its place are a large crossbar to further stiffen the body and storage for racing helmets. A weight-optimized starter battery used in racing is mounted in the rear below the two storage compartments. The strict high-performance concept left no room for an infotainment system, an MMI monitor or even a loudspeaker. The lightweight bucket seats are taken from the Audi R8 GT and feature a chassis made of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer. Red four-point belts secure the driver and passenger.

The interior of the showcar is a study in dark gray. Large areas are covered with exposed, matt-finished CFRP, including the walls in the rear section of the car, the tubes of the air vents and the “stern of the yacht” in the lower section of the center console. The CFRP material used on the open-spoked sport steering wheel is covered with leather. Rocker switches on the center console replace switches on the control stalk and in the door panels. Three additional instruments indicate the oil pressure, boost pressure and electrical system voltage.

The center console and the seats are covered in fine leather upholstery with tone-on-tone stitching. The selector lever is made of aluminum; the caps of the pedals and the surface of the footrest are made of stainless steel. Red loops replace the handles on the doors, the glove box and the covers of the storage compartments.

The Audi Trimaran was a student project by designer Stefanie Behringer (Pforzheim Technical College, Germany) for the Audi concept design studio in Munich. There are no plans to put the Trimaran into series production, but it is nonetheless an eye-catching project.

“The Audi Trimaran is a new concept which integrates two jet skis in a motorboat. The hull architecture is based on a trimaran, consisting of a main center hull supported by two smaller outrigger hulls.

Two jet skis are stored inside pods in the outriggers. The main boat is powered by two lightweight and efficient Audi TDI diesel engines, whereas the jet skis are electrically-driven. At low speeds of up to 8 knots, for example in bays or harbors, the boat can be moved using the jet ski engines alone, which produce no emissions or noise.

At higher speed up to 30 knots, the two diesel engines can be switched on continuously. During this process the electric motors in the jet skis support the diesel engines while accelerating, so that the boat is planing faster and less fuel is needed. At the same time the diesel engines recharge the batteries in the two jet skis.

The main advantage of multihulls is efficiency. This is due to the very slender hulls, which have less friction resistance in the water. Furthermore multihulls have very stable driving characteristics and lie at anchor very calmly.

The boat is 15m long and, due to its slender center hull, is only 6.40m wide. The jet ski drive concept allows you to go even into shallow water, because the draft is only 58 cm. On deck there is space for 12 people, while below the boat offers four berths. By flipping down the saloon table, another two berths can be offered.

The design is based on the Audi brand values of progressive, sporty and sophisticated.

The boat has an athletic, elegant appearance without being too powerful or aggressive. The main proportions of the exterior follow the graceful character of a sailing yacht, emphasized by the mesh surfaces within the outriggers and the shape of the main hull, which narrows to the back.

At the same time it embodies “Vorsprung durch Technik” (“Progress through Technology”) with a very technical and sophisticated look-and-feel.

The silver frame, which links the outrigger pods with the main hull, accentuates the technical aspect of Audi and is reminiscent of the aluminum frame structures of automotive engineering.

The jet skis follow the elegant and light appearance of the main boat.

The high side walls prevent spraying water, while the storage in the front gives space for equipment like a snorkel, fins or shopping from the mainland. The suspended seating bench offers excellent driving comfort.

The deck area is the place for relaxation and meeting together. As the opposite pole of the more technical and emotional exterior, the deck area design is based on very calm and puristic shapes, reminiscent of a typical lounge character. Between the two spacious seating benches, which grow out of the large sun lounger surfaces from the back, a table can be moved out of the floor. The huge panorama glass roof does not only shield the passengers from headwinds, but can also work as sun protection when shaded.”

Graphic design artist Taras Lesko started this project with 285 clean sheets of paper. Using photos and drawings of the A7, he designed 750 model pieces out of card stock, which he then printed, folded and glued together.

His equipment was a laser printer, two desktop cutting plotters, glue and an X-ACTO knife. More than 245 hours later, he had created his own bold vision. Amazing!

The 2011 Chevrolet Volt was named 2011 World Green Car of the Year at the New York Auto International Auto Show.

The World Green Car Award is the latest in a series of major awards for the Volt, which previously was named:

The Chevrolet Volt was chosen from an initial entry list of 12 new vehicles from around the world, then a shorter list of 10, then three finalists: the Chevrolet Volt, the BMW 320d Efficient Dynamics Edition and the Nissan Leaf.

The award is decided by a panel of global automotive journalists.

To be eligible for the overall World Car Award, the candidates must become available for sale on at least two continents during the period beginning Jan. 1, 2010 and ending May 30, 2011.

The Chevrolet Volt will be eligible for the 2012 World Car Award as the Volt goes on sale in Europe and Asia later this year.

"The selection of the Volt as the World Green Car is a further proof point of the fuel-efficient technologies that are now being offered by the Chevrolet brand around the world," said Rick Scheidt, vice president of Chevrolet marketing.

"This award, and the others that have preceded it, validate the efforts of the development team to build a truly remarkable vehicle with the potential to transform transportation around the globe."

2012 Cadillac SRX Offers More Powerful 3.6L Engine

The SRX will receive a 3.6L direct-injected V-6 engine projected to deliver 300 horsepower (224 kW) and 260 lb.-ft. (353 Nm) of torque, according to preliminary tests by Cadillac.

New engine delivers improved acceleration, E85 ethanol FlexFuel capability
■ Bluetooth becomes standard on all models
■ Heated steering wheel for luxury, performance and premium versions
■ New 20-inch machined-face wheel finish

The SRX’s current 3.0L direct-injected V-6 engine provides 265 horsepower (198 kW) and 223 lb.-ft (302 Nm) of torque. SRX models with the new engine are expected to arrive at dealerships in late summer. Pricing will be announced closer to the start of production.

Dramatically redesigned for the 2010 model year, the SRX has quickly climbed the luxury crossover ranks. SRX total U.S. sales rose 153 percent last year to 51,094, outselling the Acura MDX, Audi Q5 and Mercedes-Benz GLK350, and second only to the Lexus RX350 in sales among midsize luxury crossovers.

With the new engine, the SRX is projected to top the Lexus RX350 in horsepower and torque. Lexus rates the RX350’s 3.5L V-6 engine at 275 horsepower (205 kW) and 257 lb.-ft. (348 Nm) of torque.

“SRX is resonating with luxury buyers by offering the function of a crossover and the distinctive style of a Cadillac,” said Don Butler, vice president of Cadillac marketing. “Now, we’re raising the standards even higher by providing the SRX with enhanced performance. The new engine will make the SRX more responsive for passing on the highway, entering freeways from on-ramps and climbing hills.”

In addition to more horsepower and torque, the new engine has a wider rpm range for its maximum torque, which gives the driver more power across a wider range of speeds and driving conditions.

The new engine also is FlexFuel capable, meaning it can use either gasoline, E85 ethanol or any combination of the two. EPA fuel economy ratings have not been finalized, but Cadillac expects the SRX to provide customers with comparable real-world fuel efficiency. The current engine has an EPA rating of 18 city/25 highway mpg.

Other enhancements on the 2012 SRX include standard Bluetooth phone connectivity on all models, a heated steering wheel on the luxury, performance and premium trim levels and door lock switches on the driver and passenger door panels. The new model will continue to have door lock switches on the center console. Also for 2012, SRX will offer a new machined-face finish on the 20-inch wheels, which are standard on performance and premium trim levels.

“Every detail counts,” Butler said. “The SRX has been a phenomenal success, but at Cadillac, we’re always looking for ways to make our automobiles better.”

Popular features already offered on the SRX include a moveable cargo fence and large under-floor storage space in the rear, a liftgate that can be programmed to stop at different heights and an UltraView sunroof that covers 70 percent of the vehicle roof.

The SRX also is available in an all-wheel-drive version that incorporates an electronic limited slip rear differential. This system not only improves traction in slippery road conditions but provides side-to-side torque transfer along the rear axle to enhance control during hard cornering.

The Audi Q3 features the sportiest and most progressive design in its segment. The single-frame grille with its tapered upper corners dominates the front; its outline is extended by the dynamic curve of the engine hood. The wedge-shaped headlights are available as a xenon plus version including LED daytime running lights. Large air inlets hint at the potential of the engines.

Viewed from the side, the Q3 similarly exhibits Audi’s classic design characteristics. The tornado line divides the side underneath the windows.

The dynamic line imparts additional flourishes near the side sills and the wheel arches have a muscular look. Metal constitutes two thirds of the vehicle’s exterior; the greenhouse the remaining third. The roof line slopes markedly toward the ground; the D-posts resemble those of a coupe.

Despite its coupe-like styling, the Audi Q3 is clearly recognizable as a member of the Q family. Its wraparound tailgate is similar in design to those on its larger siblings, the Q5 and Q7. In conjunction with the xenon plus headlights, LED light strips serve as tail lights. The exhaust system’s tailpipes terminate to the left and to the right.

The Audi Q3 is 4.39 meters in length (14.4 ft), 1.83 meters in width (6.0 ft), and 1.60 meters (5.25 ft) in height – roof rail included. Its drag coefficient of 0.32 raises the bar in this segment; moreover, its underbody fairing facilitates optimum airflow – underneath the vehicle, too.

Audi offers twelve different colors of paint for its new compact SUV, and five customization options are available regarding add-on parts.

In addition to the standard black add-on parts, customers can choose either a full paint finish or color-contrasting add-on parts in anthracite gray for the underbody guard and wheel arches.

The Audi exclusive off-road styling package gives the Q3 a broad and powerful look. The S line exterior package, conversely, represents classic Audi and appeals to especially sporty customers.

Thanks to systematic lightweight design, the basic version of the Audi Q3 weighs less than 1,500 kilograms (3,307 lb).

Its engine hood and wraparound tailgate, which houses the taillights, are made of aluminum; the safe and solid passenger compartment features a great many ultra-high-strength steels. Its low drag coefficient of just 0.32 also enhances fuel efficiency considerably.

Audi today sustained its 2011 momentum with a series of record setting achievements. March U.S. sales of Audi cars and SUVs not only marked the third-straight monthly record for 2011, but also the best-ever March in company history and the best first quarter of all-time.

Additionally, the March 2011 results rank as the third-best monthly sales overall for the brand in its U.S. history. The strong March sales represented a month-to-month sales increase of more than 25% over February 2011, and a 14.3% improvement from March 2010.

The 2011 best first quarter in company history comes on the heels of Audi posting its best annual U.S. sales for 2010.

• March 2011 marked third-best month ever with sales of 9,818, easily eclipsing previous March record of 8,589 set in 2010
• 2011 Audi A8 flagship sales help fuel 14.3% year-over-year jump in month

Overall, Audi sold 9,818 vehicles in March 2011 compared to the 8,589 vehicles sold in March 2010 to set the old record for the month. The strong sales results were buoyed by the continued extraordinary public response to the 2011 Audi A8 flagship model with a 788.9% increase in sales from a year earlier. March 2011 was the best month for Audi A8 sales in more than five years. Sales of the Audi A4 recorded more than a 20% month-to-month sales increase over February 2011 and climbed 12.1% compared to March 2010.

Audi models have already earned significant awards in the U.S., including the Edmunds.com Technology Breakthrough Award to the 2011 Audi A8, four category winners in the Strategic Vision 2010 Total Value Index and the EyesOn Design “Best Production Vehicle” awarded to the Audi A6, which is scheduled to arrive this Fall.

In March 2011, Audi recorded year-over-year sales increases exceeding 20% with five of its models: the Audi A8, Audi Q5, Audi Q7, Audi R8 and the Audi TT. Audi Q5 crossover and Audi Q7 full-size luxury crossover sales posted 22.5% and 36.6% increases over March 2010 sales, respectively. Moreover, due to improved availability and seasonality, the Audi R8 and Audi TT recorded a combined 56.9% year-over-year sales increase compared to March 2010. Despite limited availability for the Audi A5 in the month of March, the A5 posted a month-to-month sales gain of more than 20% compared to February 2011 sales. Moreover, the Audi S5 registered a 30% sales mix, compared to the 2010 average of 26%.

“Having ended 2010 on such a high note, it was important to ensure that we continue our momentum well into 2011,” said Audi of America President Johan de Nysschen. “As first quarter sales figures clearly reinforce the notion that consumers are eager to drive the superior lineup of Audi vehicles, we are optimistic that 2011 will be another banner year for us.”

First quarter retail sales surge 38 percent, total sales rise 26 percent to 592,545 units

Passenger Cars

Total sales of GM passenger cars improved 15 percent during March, led by the sale of 18,018 Cruzes. Retail sales of GM passenger cars rose 34 percent for the month. The Cruze, Chevrolet Camaro Convertible and Buick Regal all have achieved record retail sales since being launched. For the quarter, retail sales of GM’s passenger cars were up 49 percent, also led by the Cruze, up 203 percent.

Crossovers

The Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac brands each set March total and retail sales records for crossover sales during the month, driven by a 20 percent increase in combined retail sales by the Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain. The two also set March records for retail sales. For the quarter, retail sales of GM’s complete lineup of industry-leading crossovers were up 30 percent.

Pickups

Total combined sales of Chevrolet Silverado and Avalanche, and GMC Sierra increased 11 percent in March, with retail sales also rising 11 percent versus a year ago. For the quarter, retail sales for GM’s full-size pickups rose 38 percent, while total sales improved to 130,866 units – a 31-percent increase.

Incentives

During March, purchase incentives declined on a per unit basis.

“We’ve said all along that our plan for the year was to be at or near industry average on incentives as a percent of average transaction prices, as we were last year,” Johnson said. “Our actions in March were consistent with that plan and we will continue to be prudent in our go-to-market approach.”

Month-end dealer inventory in the United States stood at about 574,000 units, which is about 57,000 higher compared to February and about 149,000 higher than March 2010.

■ Chevrolet: Chevrolet dealers delivered 148,197 total vehicles in March, an 11-percent increase versus last year. Retail sales for Chevrolet were up 18 percent. ■ Cadillac: Cadillac reported total sales of 12,164 for March – 5 percent higher than last March, with retail sales increasing 14 percent. ■ Fleet sales for GM’s four brands were 56,465 for the month, a 1-percent decrease for the month, with sales to rental fleets down 11 percent during the same period. Sales to commercial customers rose 1 percent for the month, the 12th consecutive month of commercial fleet sales gains. Fleet accounted for 27 percent of GM total sales during the month.

March capped a successful quarter for General Motors in the United States. Retail sales surged 38 percent for its four brands, driven by demand for Chevrolet’s all-new Cruze compact sedan.

In spite of a decline in incentives, dealers reported 206,621 total sales during March, an increase of 11 percent. This total included a 17 percent increase in retail sales, compared to March 2010.

March’s retail sales increase was spurred by a 34-percent rise in passenger car retail sales, led by a 287 percent gain in retail sales of the Cruze over the car it replaced.

March deliveries to fleets declined 1 percent and represented 27 percent of the company’s total sales – the ninth straight month that fleet sales comprised less than 30 percent of total sales.

For the first three months, total sales increased 26 percent to 592,545 units compared to a year earlier. As a result, each of GM’s brands – Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac – gained retail and total market share during the quarter.

“Our plan was to get out of the gates quickly in the first quarter and we succeeded,” said Don Johnson, vice president, U.S. Sales Operations. “Consumers responded favorably to the value of our broad lineup of fuel-efficient cars, trucks and crossovers.”

In the first quarter, fleet sales represented 24 percent of the company’s total sales volume, compared to 30 percent in the first quarter of 2010.

“We are systematically delivering on our commitment to strengthen and simplify our balance sheet,” said Dan Ammann, GM senior vice president and chief financial officer as of April 1.

GM will report a book gain of approximately $1.6 billion in the first quarter of 2011 related to the sale.

Earlier this month, GM sold its Ally Financial Series A preferred stock for $1.0 billion in a registered public offering. The Ally transaction will result in a book gain of $0.3 billion to be recorded in the first quarter of 2011.

Innovative Hybrid “Mid-Electric” Propulsion System - Celebrates Brand’s Design Heritage in Its Newest Auto Market

Chevrolet introduced the Mi-ray concept today at the 2011 Seoul Motor Show. The roadster celebrates Chevrolet’s 100-year heritage of designing expressive vehicles in the brand’s newest market.

According to GM Korea President and CEO Mike Arcamone, “‘Mi-ray’ is Korean for ‘future.’ As GM rolls out Chevrolet across Korea, the Mi-ray concept offers an exploration of future possibilities for the brand. It strengthens the bond between car and driver, creating a fresh look at what sports cars of the future might be.”

The Mi-ray was developed at the GM Advanced Design Studio in Seoul. Combining cutting-edge hybrid propulsion technology and advanced styling, it balances iconic Chevrolet design cues with a future design vision as Chevrolet celebrates its centennial in 2011.

Classic Exterior
The Mi-ray pays tribute to Chevrolet’s sports car heritage. It is small and open like the 1963 Monza SS, and light and purposeful like the 1962 Corvair Super Spyder. Its aerodynamic fuselage is reminiscent of modern jet fighters.

Made of carbon fiber and CFRP (carbon fiber-reinforced plastic), the wedged body side is divided by an angled character line, with ambient lighting underneath. This accent creates a sweeping line of light when the car is in motion, bringing a warm glow to the sculptured body. Le Mans racer-style scissor doors open up and out of the way for dramatic access to the interior.

The powerful front end offers a reinterpretation of the Chevrolet face. The Mi-ray’s dual port grille is flanked by LED headlamps with new signature daytime running lamps. The front and rear fenders evoke Chevrolet Corvettes of the past and express the concept’s sports car spirit. At the corners, carbon-fiber spoilers help control down force and airflow.

Distinctive retractable flaps provide additional airflow control while providing access to the charge port on one side and the fuel filler on the other. The charge port also features an external battery charge indicator. Each rear fender contains individual cargo space for the storage of small items. Under the ducktail surface, the taillamps provide a new interpretation of Chevrolet’s twin element identity.

The Mi-ray features aluminum-carbon fiber composite 20-inch wheels in front and 21-inch wheels in the rear. The strong turbine theme evokes movement, even when the Mi-ray is stationary.

The heavily tapered top view enhances the Mi-ray’s purposeful image. From above, the cabin has a unique diamond shape.

Sporty Interior

The interior of the Mi-ray echoes Chevrolet’s racing heritage. As with the exterior, it takes inspiration from jet fighters. The Mi-ray contains a melange of brushed aluminum, natural leather, white fabric and liquid metal surfaces, for an overall effect of sculptural velocity.

The interior compartment is surrounded by a carbon fiber shell, which gives it a lightweight yet rigid structure. Its flowing, yet slightly tensioned, twin cockpit tightly wraps around the driver and passenger. The cockpit is driver focused, drawing inspiration from the iconic Chevrolet sports car. However, the passenger is also fully engaged in the driving experience.

Asymmetric seats flow from the door, forming a symmetric interior that gives the driver a feeling of being fully connected with the car. Ambient lighting, which starts from the upper instrument panel and flows into the seat back area, adds a sense of luxury. Seat cushions and headrests are connected by the lightweight carbon fiber shell and mounted on a single aluminum rail. The headrest area follows the exterior form, integrating with an air scarf for open-air driving.

Designers took a unique approach to displaying information, using back projection on the instrument panel. Information in front of the driver has been prioritized into three zones. Immediately in front is vehicle performance. It is flanked on the left by range and on the right by navigation and mileage figures. This eliminates unnecessary visual clutter, allowing the driver to focus on the thrill of driving.

The center touch screen flows down to an aluminum support, which evokes a fighter jet’s nose with the landing gear down. The exterior surface waterfalls down into the interior to meet the reinforced console, connecting the front and rear of the car.

The centrally located start button is also inspired by a jet aircraft. When the button is pressed, the column-mounted retractable meter cluster rises like a jet fighter canopy and “Interactive Projection” appears on the white surface.

Retractable rearview cameras, which replace traditional rearview mirrors, extend from the side glass electrically. In city driving, the forward-facing camera operates in conjunction with GPS to overlay navigation information with real-time video.

Fuel-Efficient, High-Performance Propulsion System

The Mi-ray features a concept “mid-electric” propulsion system, located primarily behind and beneath the driver, that maximizes performance and fuel efficiency.

“Many of the components in the Mi-ray’s propulsion system are a logical extension of GM’s current technology portfolio,” said Uwe Grebe, executive director for GM Powertrain Advanced Engineering. “The concept shows the potential for reconfiguring, rescaling and extending today’s propulsion technologies.”

The Mi-ray is propelled by two front-mounted 15-kW electric motors for quick acceleration and zero emissions in urban driving. The motors are powered by a 1.6-kWh lithium-ion battery that is charged through regenerative braking energy. The Mi-ray has the capability of being switched from front-wheel drive to rear-wheel drive.

For performance driving, the Mi-ray’s 1.5-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine combines with the electric motors, providing spirited torque control to both the left and right wheels as needed. The high-tech engine, mounted behind the cockpit, drives the rear wheels while seamlessly integrating electrification technology that defines a new standard in the compact roadster segment.

A dual-clutch transmission (DCT) enables a reduction in the powertrain’s size by eliminating the torque converter. Shifts are quick and firm. The shift pattern has been tuned for improved top speed in performance mode. A start-stop system works in conjunction with the DCT.

“The propulsion concept fits perfectly with the rest of the vehicle, delivering big performance in a small footprint, on the road and in the environment,” said Arcamone. “By combining GM propulsion technology and visionary design, the Mi-ray points to the future of Chevrolets around the globe – expressive, youthful and entertaining.”

The all-new Malibu will transcend time zones and embrace the diversity of cultures around the world when Chevrolet simultaneously unveils it live at the Shanghai Auto Show.

Members of the Chevrolet team will be on hand to answer questions during a live moderated question-and-answer session following the web reveal.

The timing of the Web reveal coincides with the April 19 auto show debut of the new Malibu in Shanghai. The Malibu show car will also be shown at the New York International Auto Show, which is open to the public April 23 through May 1.

“This Malibu takes Chevrolet’s established and award-winning nameplate to new places and introduces it to new audiences around the world,” said Rick Scheidt, vice president of Chevrolet.

“Whether the Malibu is sold in North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, or Australia, it has been engineered from the ground up to meet the needs of customers around the world.”

The Malibu will feature a global family of fuel-efficient and powerful four-cylinder engines, along with six-speed transmissions that also contribute to efficient performance.

The Malibu was designed to stand out in all markets around the globe, while its European-inspired driving characteristics were engineered to challenge the best in its class.

The new Malibu is Chevrolet’s first midsize car to be sold globally. It will be sold in nearly 100 countries on six continents and built in multiple locations, including China and two facilities in the United States.

“We look forward to offering the new Malibu to our customers across China," said Kevin Wale, president and managing director of the GM China Group. “The Malibu fully embodies Chevrolet's tradition of dynamic styling, superior handling and outstanding fuel efficiency. The Malibu was Chevrolet’s – and GM’s – best-selling car in the United States in 2010, with sales of nearly 200,000 vehicles. The Malibu was the only midsize car in the industry to win the Consumers Digest Automotive “Best Buy” award the last three years – 2011, 2010 and 2009.

The Malibu has also been named a “Top Safety Pick” by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety the last two years.

With the new Malibu, Chevrolet continues to position itself for worldwide growth. GM’s largest brand is in the midst of introducing a global family of fuel-efficient cars including the Cruze, Volt, Sonic/Aveo, Spark and Malibu.

These new cars compete in the four largest vehicle segments in the world, which accounted for 54 percent of all non-luxury sales in 2010. The global segment that Malibu will compete in represented 9 percent – more than 5.7 million vehicles – of global sales in 2010.

Last year, Chevrolet sold 4.26 million vehicles globally, or an average of one vehicle every 7.4 seconds.

Eight of the top 10–selling markets for Chevrolet in 2010 were emerging markets – Brazil, China, Uzbekistan, Mexico, Russia, India, Argentina and Colombia. Emerging Markets are expected to account for more than 50 percent of Chevrolet global sales by 2012.

General Motors today announced more than $30 million of investment in its Pontiac Stamping Plant earmarked for tooling and equipment to enhance the plant’s manufacturing capabilities.

“GM continues to invest in our manufacturing operations to ensure we have the technology and equipment we need to build whatever our vehicle designers develop,” said Gerald Johnson, GM manufacturing manager.

“Orion Assembly is the primary customer for Pontiac Stamping and we know how important the launch of the Chevrolet Sonic and Buick Verano are to our customers.”

The investments will cover upgrading three conventional press lines already operating at the plant and the installation of two additional presses that are coming to Pontiac Stamping as part of GM’s stamping consolidation project. These actions will position Pontiac Stamping as a regional center supporting many plants.

“This investment is the result of the employee’s commitment to quality and how they work as a team to support their customers,” said GM Pontiac Stamping Plant Manager Alicia Boler-Davis.

Pontiac Stamping opened in 1932 and provides parts to support several GM products including the Chevrolet Sonic and the Buick Verano, both launching later this year.

“The men and women of UAW Local 653 know that producing high-quality parts is essential to meet the needs of our customers,” said UAW Local 653 Chairman Norm Greenfield. “We take a lot of pride in our work and this investment is important to the future of this plant.”

Local officials agreed the investment would have a positive impact on the community.

Oakland Country Executive L. Brooks Patterson said, “After a few challenging years, it is great to see GM investing in our community. It’s a sign that the auto industry is back.”

“This is welcomed news for our community because it retains jobs and we look forward to partnering with GM for years to come,” added Pontiac Mayor Leon Jukowski.

The investment will retain 290 hourly and salaried jobs at Pontiac Stamping.

It's official: beginning this fall, Nissan dealerships in Canada will start selling the electric Leaf, the world's first mass-produced, zero-emissions vehicle. With an MSRP that starts at $38,395 ($39,341 U.S. at the current exchange rate) for the SV base model and $39,995 ($40,980 U.S.) for the range-topping SL model, the Leaf will hit Canada carrying a price tag that's significantly higher than the electric hatchback's $32,780 MSRP in the U.S.

Today Nissan Canada announced pricing for the all-new Nissan LEAF, the world's first affordable, mass-marketed all-electric car made for the real-world driving needs of consumers.

With an MSRP starting at $38,395, the 2011 Nissan LEAF offers Canadians the first real opportunity to own a zero-emission car that offers them the size, safety, features and comfort they desire to meet their day-to-day driving needs.

With its 24 kWh battery, customers in Ontario and Quebec are eligible for a provincial government rebate of $8,500 and $8,000, respectively, toward the cost of a Nissan LEAF, the maximum amount available.

"The pricing announcement today brings us one step closer to the Nissan LEAF officially arriving on Canadian streets this fall for consumers and the interest from Canadian's demonstrates their desire for a viable zero-emission choice," said Ian Forsyth, EV Project Manager with Nissan Canada Inc.

"In addition to driving one of the most innovative and fun-to-drive cars in the market, Nissan LEAF owners will have the added benefit of a fraction of the operating costs of traditional gas-powered and hybrid vehicles."

The operating costs of the Nissan LEAF are significantly less than an internal combustion engine (ICE) because it does not have an engine, requires no oil changes and requires less maintenance work. As well, the cost per kilometre of a Nissan LEAF is about 80% lower than that of a very fuel-efficient car.

For example, a car with an ICE and an average fuel efficiency of 8 litres/100 kms will cost about $1,760 in gas per year (assuming a gas price of $1.10/litre and a distance of 20,000 kms/year). To travel the same distance in the Nissan LEAF will cost approximately $320 per year (with electricity at $0.11 kWh).

"The Nissan LEAF was designed from the ground up as an all-electric vehicle and includes extensive design innovations exclusive to this car," added Forsyth. "In addition to the lithium-ion battery that's at the heart of Nissan LEAF, there's the noise-reducing antenna design, an ECO driving mode to maximize range and the CARWINGS telematics system to communicate with the car via smart phone, to name just a few."

The Nissan LEAF will be available in two trim levels including the well-equipped "SV" base model ($38,395) which includes an extensive list of standard features including the "cold weather package" specifically designed for countries with colder climates. Also standard are:

Today the Audi plant in Ingolstadt produced the five-millionth Audi A4 – an Audi A4 Avant 3.0 TDI quattro in Misano Red. This production milestone is the latest evidence of a success story that began in 1994 when the A4 model name was adopted.

A great favorite with customers, the A4 accounts for a high proportion of production capacity at the Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm plants.

In the words of Frank Dreves, Member of the Board of Management for Production at AUDI AG: “This is another major milestone in Audi’s history. All versions of the A4 are efficient, elegant and enjoy outstanding success in their class. Our highly motivated team and our effective Audi production system will keep this model on course for continued success in the future.”

Audi began production of the A4 model line at its Ingolstadt site in 1994, and since 2007 has also been building it at Neckarsulm as part of the production turntable. Fiat brand records the lowest C02 emissions rating in Europe for fourth straight year

For the fourth straight year, Fiat brand automobiles has recorded the lowest level of carbon dioxide emissions (C02) for vehicles sold in Europe.

The automaker had an average measurement of 123.1 grams of C02 per kilometer - a drop of 4.7 (g/km) from the previous year.

Fiat Automobile Group also ranked first with a rating of 125.9 g/km.

Over the past four years, Fiat brand automobiles has reduced its C02 emissions an average of 10 percent from 137.3 to 123.1 - a full four years ahead of the European Union target set for 130 g/km by 2015.

Recent technologies introduced by Fiat include the TwinAir engine, the world's most "ecological" turbo; alternate fuels including liquid propane gas (LPG); and eco:Drive, an innovative technology that encourages driving that is more responsible and eco-compatible.

In the United States, the new Fiat 500 marks the introduction of Fiat Multiair fuel delivery system to North America.

Standard on the 1.4-liter engine in the Fiat 500, Multiair increase fuel economy by up to 10 percent and reduces emissions by 10 percent without any loss in power.

Many of Fiat's technical innovations in fuel delivery are grouped within the "Air Technologies" brand that helps provide solutions in an economical and low environmental impact without giving up the driving pleasure that is characteristic of Fiat brand cars.

Cruze’s Innovative Electrical Technology Saves Fuel

Improving fuel economy in the Chevrolet Cruze consists of many small steps, including reducing the energy consumed by the alternator to help make the engine run more efficiently.

Officially, it is a patented General Motors technology called Regulated Voltage Control or RVC.

“We estimate RVC improves fuel economy on the Cruze by up to 1.5 percent,” said Doug Dickson, an electrical engineering specialist with the GM Global Energy Center. "To a Cruze customer, RVC enables them to get more than eight additional miles of range on every tank of fuel."

With RVC, the power that runs from the alternator to the battery is reduced from 14 volts to 12.8 volts under normal driving conditions. This allows the alternator to focus the power on the vehicle’s electrical loads and avoid charging the battery with current it doesn’t need.

When the voltage to the battery is reduced, the demand on the alternator is reduced. That in turn reduces the alternator’s pull on the engine, allowing the engine to run more efficiently.

With the engine running more efficiently, fuel economy is improved.

When the battery is in a high state of charge, regulated voltage control extends to supplying some of the power to handle the load created by vehicle electronics, such as the radio.

The sharing further reduces the electrical demands on the alternator and the engine helping to gain further engine efficiencies.

When the battery charge drops below a pre-determined level, the alternator automatically knows to route the necessary voltage to recharge the battery. This regenerative recharging automatically occurs when the vehicle is decelerating. So even though the battery is handling more of the vehicle’s electrical load, it will remain at a high state of charge.

“Engineers left no stone unturned when it came to implementing fuel saving technologies on the Cruze,” Dickson said. “Fuel economy is becoming a greater factor in purchasing decisions.” wrote General Motors.

Chevrolet Unveils Colorado Show Truck

Chevrolet today revealed the Colorado Show Truck in advance of the Bangkok International Auto Show, where it is making its global public debut.

The concept previews the next-generation Colorado midsize pickup truck, which will build on Chevrolet’s strong truck DNA and award-winning heritage. The Colorado goes on sale in Thailand later this year.

“Thailand is the world’s-largest market for midsize pickups, so this was the perfect location in which to unveil our new Colorado,” said Susan Docherty, vice president, GMIO Sales, Marketing and Aftersales.

“Trucks have been part of Chevrolet’s core for nearly all of its 100-year history. The Colorado reinforces that heritage with expressive design, refinement and uncompromising capability.”

The show truck features an extended-cab body atop a high-stance AWD chassis and rides on large, 20-inch wheels and off-road tires. Power comes from an efficient 2.8L turbo-diesel engine, which produces a broad torque band for excellent cargo and towing capability.

“Although this is a show vehicle, the basic proportions and form convey the vision for the next-generation Colorado that we will bring to market,” said Brad Merkel, GM's global vehicle line executive.

“It reflects a stylized version of the new truck, one that takes into account rugged dependable truck capabilities for commercial use as well as sophisticated refinement for personal-use needs.”

While the new Colorado was developed within GM’s global product development organization, engineers took careful steps to ensure it would meet local market needs. Roberto Rempel, GM's global vehicle chief engineer, lived in Thailand for several months during the truck’s development, immersing himself in the market and observing how the Thai people use their trucks and the road conditions they experience.

“Pickups are instrumental in the vibrant Thai economy and owners take great pride in their trucks, which are used for both work and personal driving,” he said.

“These customers ask a lot of their trucks, so the powertrains and chassis must be very robust to earn their trust – and that’s exactly what we’ve delivered.”

Inside, there’s another signature Chevrolet cue: a dual-cockpit instrument panel design.

It flows into the doors, with continuous lines that create a floating, wraparound effect, amplifying the Colorado’s feeling of spaciousness. Ice-blue lighting and high-quality, “double-faced” leather-trimmed seats add sophistication and refinement.

“The interior is designed to deliver a premium and inviting environment, with a greater feeling of spaciousness than is typically found in midsize trucks,” said Welburn. “There’s also great attention to detail in the execution of the features you see and feel.”

A brace of motorcycle-inspired, three-dimensional gauges stand out on the instrument panel, projecting a sporty appearance.

Contrasting trim used with the light-colored leather seating, dark wood trim accented with chrome and low-gloss and soft-touch materials are used throughout for a premium feel.

A number of storage compartments are located throughout the interior, including a covered center bin for concealment of valuable items, and a large, dual glovebox.

Additional features include a dual-zone, digital climate control system and the latest in “infotainment” technology. The show truck highlights an ergonomically positioned 7-inch LCD display in the center stack, for easy viewing and intuitive control of Web access, navigation, music and hands-free phone features.

Audi tests next R18 evolution

Audi has put the next stage of its R18 project to the test: The latest version of its new diesel race car, which will appear in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, was test-driven for the first time in the USA.

The "Evolution 2” Audi R18 is the result of the findings of previous test drives and wind tunnel testing, with a particular focus on improved aerodynamic efficiency and cooling of the interior of its V6 TDI engine.

It clocked up its first test kilometers on a proving ground in Florida last week, as the 12 Hours of Sebring were held.

The Audi R18 made its first public testing appearance after the 12-hour race in Sebring. Since then, internet forums have been abuzz with comments and discussions concerning the new, enclosed LMP1 race car.

The comments on the photos and videos of the vehicle range from "magic” to "looks like a stealth airplane” and "sounds like a jet.”

Two "Evolution 2” R18 vehicles (chassis numbers 101 and 102) were put to the test during the four days of testing in Sebring, together with an R15 TDI as a reference vehicle.

All ten Audi racing drivers were involved in testing the three vehicles, clocking up thousands of test kilometers to generate important findings relating to vehicle setup, aerodynamics, tires, cooling, and reliability.

The Audi R18 will make its next appearance on the famous racetrack in Le Mans, when the definitive design of the vehicle for the 24 Hours of Le Mans 2011 will be unveiled at the official testing day on April 24. The brand with the four rings produced 437,792 vehicles with quattro drive last year. In the year in which Audi celebrated “30 years of quattro,” around 38 percent of all cars produced worldwide were equipped with the all-wheel drive technology. With 74,262 new car registrations for all-wheel drive models, Audi also topped the competition in Germany.

The most popular Audi model with quattro drive in 2010 was the Audi Q5, 155,025 units of which were built. In the months ahead, the brand will further expand its all-wheel drive lineup in the SUV segment with the Audi Q5 hybrid quattro and the compact Q3. But it is not just SUV drivers who are turning to quattro; the all-wheel drive technology is a popular choice of Audi customers for all other model lines as well. From the Audi A3 to the A8, nearly one quarter of the automobiles produced in 2010 had quattro on board.

“quattro is one of the Audi brand’s greatest success stories, and today we are writing what may well be its most exciting chapter,” says Peter Schwarzenbauer, Member of the Board of Management for Marketing and Sales at AUDI AG. “As we move down the road toward electric mobility, we see entirely new possibilities for quattro technology. Behind the successful quattro principle are four different technologies, which Audi is constantly refining in order to build the ideal all-wheel drive system for each vehicle concept. The latest evolutionary stage of the quattro system featuring a crown-gear center differential and torque vectoring is available in the Audi RS 5, A7 Sportback and the new A6.

The quattro drive system also recorded yet another success in the voting for the “2011 All-wheel Drive Car of the Year.” As in 2010, more than 119,000 readers of the trade journal Auto Bild Allrad chose the Audi A4 (“All-wheel drive cars from €25,000 to 40,000”) and the A8 (“All-wheel drive cars over €40,000”) as the winners of their respective classes. This marks the sixth year in a row that Audi has had two winners in this competition.

What Car Warning Lights Mean?

Cars are controlled by computer systems that monitor an assortment of critical components. When the computer “senses” the car is operating outside of standard parameters, it stores trouble codes in its memory and triggers a light that appears on the dash to indicate that there is a problem. A scanner tool needs to be connected to the car’s computer in order to retrieve the stored trouble code(s). Often, the code doesn't tell exactly what’s wrong or what component is faulty; it only indicates what system is malfunctioning and where the technician needs to start looking.

Check Engine Light : This light usually points to a problematic circuit, as opposed to a specific component, sometimes resulting in a lengthy process to identify, diagnose and repair. We strongly recommend that you get it checked out or you risk damaging the engine or emission components.

What is the most common reason for a check engine light to illuminate? A loose or faulty gas cap! After filling up, make sure you secure your cap on tightly.

SRS Light :This is your airbag system. Given that this is a safety system, it is well monitored with sensors and automatic self-tests. The slightest malfunction illuminates the SRS light. The vehicle can still be driven, at the risk of your safety.

ABS Lights: The ABS system helps you from skidding out of control during braking by limiting your wheels from locking up/skidding. The vehicle can still be driven, at the risk of your safety.

Low Coolant Light: This will come on when the coolant drops below the level sensor. The most common reason is a leak or an electrical fault in the warning lamp circuit.

Can it be driven? If there are no major leaks, the vehicle is not overheating and there is still some evidence of coolant in the overflow bottle, it can be driven. If you can see coolant leaking on the ground (typically a green color), than tow it.

Red Oil Light On: Stop driving immediately and shut the engine off! Your engine oil may be low or there may be an issue with the circuit. Refer to the owner’s manual, check the oil level and add as necessary. Internal engine damage can occur if this is not taken care of promptly.

Red Brake Warning Lights: DANGER! If the brake pedal feels abnormal or spongy—don’t drive—tow it! Make sure that your emergency brake is not on as this will illuminate a red brake warning light.

Yellow Brake Warning Light: This is an early warning system for brake pad wear. Have your brakes checked to decrease the possibility of extensive damage.

Can it be driven and for how long? Yes. How long depends on your driving style. City drivers with constant stop-and-go traffic will need their brakes addressed before someone who does highway driving. However, you can do more damage to the brakes by wearing the pads down to the metal backing plate, which could then damage your rotors. If you continue to drive until you hear or feel grinding, you should stop driving and have your vehicle towed.

Air Suspension Lights : Indicate that there is a leak of air or hydraulic fluid.

Can it be driven? Sometimes, but if the suspension is lower than usual, and/or the vehicle just doesn’t feel right, tow it! Extensive damage could result if the suspension drops too low while driving.

Tire Pressure Warning Light: If your tire is low on air, your car lets you know via sensors mounted in various places. Sometimes the reset procedure is as simple as pressing a button. Other times, it involves setting the tire pressures and recalibrating the computer.

Emission Warning Light: This lets you know that an emissions component has failed or detected a fault. If the light starts flashing, pull over and shut off vehicle immediately. Restart if the light is not flashing. If the light continues to flash, shut off and have it towed. A Lamborghini Gallardo was destroyed by a group of men in the Chinese city of Qindao. The owner of the Italian sports car decided to smash it to show his disappointment with Lamborghini.

The Lamborghini Gallardo was bought six months ago, but the engine failed to start on November 29, 2010.

The owner contacted the Lamborghini dealer in Qingdao and they transported the Gallardo to their maintenance center.

The engine problem wasn't solved, but instead the bumper and chassis were damaged by the transport.

The owner complained by the dealer but they refused to take responsibility in this matter, so the angry owner contacted Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann, the brand's China headquarters, its after-sales service manager for Asia-Pacific region, and the brand's owner Volkswagen Group, but the problem was not solved.

Angry about the service, the owner felt his consumer rights were ignored. So he decided that the best way to gain attention was to destroy his car on the 15th of March, which is also World Consumer Rights Day.

Apparently, he hired people to publicly destroy his car with hammers and make his statement. This protest was made to provoke public support and goad the manufacturer to respect his consumer rights.

A long sports car season starts for Audi Sport Team Joest in March: On the agenda up to November are seven races, the Le Mans test weekend and numerous tests with the Audi R15 TDI and the new Audi R18, which does not, however, race at Sebring.

So as not to interrupt preparations for the 24 Hours of Le Mans on June 11/12 the test and development program with the R18 continues to run in parallel to the opening round of the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup 2011 (ILMC) season.

As a result one car in particular bids farewell at the 12 Hours of Sebring, a car that made its debut here two years ago: the Audi R15 TDI. It celebrated its 2009 premiere with a victory – the ninth for Audi in this traditional event in US state of Florida since 2000.

For the second appearance at Sebring the diesel racing sports car competes under completely new conditions.

New technical regulations from the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO) are valid in 2011, for which Audi has developed the “closed cockpit” R18. Older models like the R15 TDI may only compete in heavily modified form with greatly restricted engine power. Just how these cars will fare against the new models remains to be seen.

The new LMP1 prototype regulations limit engine displacement for new models such as the Audi R18, which will contest its first race in May, to 3.7 liters. Older cars like the Audi R15 TDI will be slowed down accordingly.

To this end, the 5.5 liter V10 engine in the Audi R15 TDI must now draw air through two intake-air restrictors of 33.5 millimeter diameter – this is four millimeters less than before. At the same time the boost pressure is reduced by 23 percent to 2,000 millibar – 2,590 millibar was allowed before.

The fuel tank may only hold 65 instead of the previous 81 liters of diesel, the fuel flow restrictor in the autonomous refueling tank was also reduced by five to 28 millimeters. “The drivers felt the engine restrictions very clearly during the test in Florida.

They miss several dozen horsepower,” explains Ralf Jüttner, Technical Director of Audi Sport Team Joest. “The reduction in tank volume sounds drastic at first, but the engine obviously also consumes less. The slower flow rate from the external tank means that pit stops will certainly not be any shorter despite the smaller fuel tank volume.”

The Audi R15 TDI makes its farewell appearance in Florida in the hands of two successful driver line ups.

Timo Bernhard and Romain Dumas, who won at Sebring in 2008, share the car with start number “1” with Mike Rockenfeller. Dindo Capello/Tom Kristensen/Allan McNish, the Sebring winners in 2009, drive the “2” numbered Audi.

Two new partners are also part of the team for the first time at Sebring: Lining up alongside Bosch, Mahle, Michelin and TAG Heuer to partner the Audi sports car program from 2011 are Alpinestars, specialists for motorsport and extreme sports clothing as well as street wear, and lubricant manufacturer Castrol.

With Castrol a familiar face returns to the side of Audi Sport; the two companies were already very successful together in competition as partners in the DTM, super touring cars and in rallying.

A total of 1,092,411 Audi brand automobiles delivered during the 2010 fiscal year; €35.4 billion in revenue, €3.34 billion operating profit; operating return on sales of 9.4 percent.

The Audi Group has concluded the 2010 fiscal year with a record result. “The operating profit of €3.34 billion shows how profitable Audi is. We are growing not only in China, but in many regions around the world. The Audi brand has outpaced the growth of the overall market, especially in the United States,” said Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG. “We’ve started the year off well and we’re targeting more than 1.2 million deliveries to customers for the total year,” Stadler said.

For Audi, 2010 was the best year for sales in the Company’s history. Deliveries of Audi brand automobiles on worldwide markets rose last year by 15 percent to 1,092,411. Revenue rose during the 2010 financial year by a disproportionately high rate to €35,441 million (29,840 million)* – an increase of 18.8 percent.

The Audi Group significantly increased its operating profit by 108.2 percent to €3,340 million (1,604 million). The profit before tax, at €3,634 million (1,928 million) was 88.5 percent above that of the previous year. Profit after tax rose by 95.2 percent to €2,630 million (1,347 million).

The Company increased its operating return on sales to 9.4 percent (5.4 percent). Return on investment also reached a new peak, at 24.7 percent (11.5 percent).

Net liquidity increased by 25.5 percent to €13,383 million (10,665 million).

The successful performance of the Audi Group was particularly due to a multitude of new product launches in the past year: the new models range, among others, from the flagship A8 to the A7 Sportback and the Audi A1 – the first Audi premium car in the subcompact segment.

Power like a V6, fuel consumption like a four-cylinder TDI – the Audi Q5 hybrid quattro, scheduled to arrive at dealerships at the end of the year, is the first mass-produced hybrid model from Audi that makes use of two drive systems. Together they have a system output of 180 kW (245 hp) and a system torque of 480 Nm (354.03 lb-ft). The Audi Q5 hybrid sprints from 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 7.1 seconds, while the interim sprint from 80 to 120 km/h (49.71 to 74.56 mph) is accomplished in fifth gear in 5.9 seconds. The propulsion ends at no less than 222 km/h (137.94 mph).

In the normal cycle, the Audi Q5 hybrid quattro consumes 6.9 liters of fuel per 100 km (33.60 US mpg) – that corresponds to a CO2 emissions level of 159 g per km (257.50 g/mile). The 75-liter (19.81-US gallon) tank yields an impressive range comparable to that of a TDI.

Drivetrain
The 2.0 TFSI in the Audi Q5 hybrid quattro has a displacement of 1984 cc. Its output is 155 kW (211 hp), with the maximum torque of 350 Nm (258.15 lb-ft) permanently available between 1,500 and 4,200 rpm. The four-cylinder unit combines gasoline direct injection with turbocharging. The Audi valve lift system (AVS) further increases power, torque and efficiency by switching the stroke of the exhaust valves between two stages depending on the load and rpm.

The 2.0 TFSI has been overhauled in some respects for use in the Audi Q5 hybrid. The drive of the ancillary units has been dropped, and the crankshaft bearing and fine tuning of the turbocharger have been adapted to the specific demands. A secondary air system at the cylinder head makes sure that the exhaust gas treatment cuts in particularly fast. Integrated in the engine control unit, the so-called hybrid manager controls the efficient change and smooth transitions between the operating modes.

A largely modified eight-speed tiptronic serves as the power transmission without the aid of a torque converter. Its place is taken by the disk-shaped electric motor, combined with a multi-plate clutch bathed in oil, which couples and decouples the electric motor and the TFSI. The innovative decoupler operates precisely and smoothly in any situation.

The highly comfortable and fast-shifting hybrid gear unit contributes significantly to the efficiency of the Audi Q5 hybrid – its eight gears are widely spaced. When the 2.0 TFSI is deactivated, an electric pump maintains the oil pressure in the hydraulic system to safeguard the convenient start-stop feature.

Power electronics and electric motor
The radiator tank in the engine bay houses the power electronics. The so-called pulse-controlled inverter serves as a controller between the battery, which outputs direct current, and the electric motor that operates on alternating current. Innovative technologies keep the volume and weight of the power electronics low, with cooling provided by a separate low-temperature water-filled circuit. The component includes a DC/DC converter that couples the electric consumers in the 12 V electrical system with the high-voltage network.

A permanently excited synchronous machine serves as an electric motor, as a starter and – during deceleration – as an alternator. It delivers up to 40 kW (54 hp) of power and 210 Nm (155.63 lb-ft) of torque. The electric motor is integrated in the engine’s cooling circuit.

Battery
A lithium-ion battery system, weighing merely 38 kg (83.78 lb), serves as the energy store for the electric motor of the Audi Q5 hybrid quattro. The compact unit with its 26-liter (6.87 US-gallon) capacity is positioned in a crash-safe area under the loading floor, with hardly any detriment to the luggage compartment. The battery consists of 72 cells; at 266 volts its nominal energy is 1.3 kWh and its output 39 kW.

The lithium-ion battery is cooled by air in two ways, depending on the requirement. At low-temperature load, it draws temperate air from the vehicle interior by way of a fan. If its temperature exceeds a certain limit, a separate refrigerant circuit is activated. It is coupled to the main climate control system of the vehicle and uses a separate evaporator. This efficient, active cooling mechanism is a major factor in the hybrid system's high electric availability and sets the Audi Q5 hybrid quattro apart from many other hybrid vehicles.

Operating modes
The Audi Q5 hybrid quattro can be driven in five operating modes. Driving with the combustion engine alone, with the electric drive alone or in hybrid mode is possible, as are recuperation and boosting. At a standstill – before starting or at a traffic light, for instance – both drive sources are deactivated. In this “comfort” start-stop mode, the climate control system remains active. Once the driver releases the brake, the Q5 hybrid quattro begins coasting. It can be driven up to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) under electric power – with almost no noise or local emissions. At a constant speed of 60 km/h (37.28 mph), it has a range of 3 km – enough for many residential areas and city centers.

The driver can change between three programs using a button on the center console or the selector lever. The EV characteristic map gives priority to the electric drive in the city, the D mode controls both motors for optimal consumption, and the S mode as well as the touch control gate of the tiptronic are designed for a sporty driving style.

If the driver accelerates quickly, the combustion engine takes over and delivers traction. Now the electric motor’s main job is to power the on-board consumers and keep the accumulator battery charged. In quick acceleration, or “boosting,” the electric motor operates together with the TFSI; at full throttle in the S mode the full system output is briefly available. In such cases, the hybrid drive supplies the propulsion power of a large naturally aspirated engine, but with far more efficiency.

When the driver releases the accelerator, the electric motor acts as an alternator and recovers energy. In most situations the TFSI is then decoupled from the drive system so as not to cause any drag losses. The electricity recovered by the electric motor here and in braking is buffered in the lithium-ion battery. If the driver brakes only slightly, the electric motor performs the deceleration by itself; in more forceful braking the hydraulic braking system is simultaneously activated.

Vehicle operation
The Audi Q5 hybrid features a novel display concept, in which each of the hybrid drive’s driving modes can be experienced. The tachometer has been replaced on the instrument cluster by a “power meter,” with a needle that indicates the total system output on a scale of 0 to 100. A second scale is divided into colored segments; its green and orange segments clearly show which drive system the Q5 hybrid quattro is currently using. An additional instrument displays the charge level of the battery.

At the same time, the display of the driver information system and the large monitor of the MMI Navigation plus show the operating states and power flows in the hybrid system in elegant graphics with a three-dimensional effect. The MMI screen also displays differentiated consumption and recuperation statistics in easily understandable bar graphs.

The latest-generation MMI navigation plus is standard in the Audi Q5 hybrid quattro. The storage capacity of the hard drive is 60 GB, the menus can be selected via a state-of-the-art wizard, and the album tracks are displayed using the cover artwork. An external device such as a cell phone or player can be connected via Bluetooth, and the voice input understands town and street names in a single command. The resonant Audi sound system is also standard.

quattro drive and chassis
quattro permanent four-wheel drive reliably applies the power of both power units to the road in any situation. In the normal condition the sporty drive is emphasized at the rear; if need be, it transmits most of the power to the axle with the better traction. The sophisticated chassis includes many aluminum components for reduced weight. The Audi Q5 hybrid quattro is capable of pulling trailer loads of up to 2000 kg (4,409 lb).

The steering is based on an electromechanical system. The system is extremely efficient because it consumes no energy when driving straight ahead. The brake servo is additionally supplied by an electric vacuum pump. A complex control strategy adapts the braking to the conditions of electric driving and energy recuperation.

Exterior
Subtle visual effects on the exterior are a signature feature of the Audi Q5 hybrid quattro. The rear hatch, fenders and aluminum door sills bear hybrid badges. The radiator grill is painted a high-gloss black, and the tailpipes are trimmed in chrome. An exclusive paint finish in Arctic Silver metallic is available as an option.

The 19-inch cast aluminum wheels were specially designed for the hybrid – their ten spokes are reminiscent of turbine blades. The tires are size 235/55. Audi also offers customers 19- and 20-inch diagonal wheels, and an S line bumper is available from quattro GmbH.

The body is extraordinarily light, with the rear hatch and engine hood made of aluminum. The rigid body shell incorporates hot-shaped steel in numerous places, combining low weight with extremely high strength. Despite an extensive array of standard equipment, the Q5 hybrid quattro with its curb weight of less than 2000 kg (4,409 lb) is the lightest hybrid SUV on the world market. All of its hybrid components add less than 130 kg (286.60 lb) of extra weight.

Equipment and trim
The climate control system in the Audi Q5 hybrid is adapted to the requirements of electric driving. A high-voltage electric drive was used for the compressor. It operates on-demand, making it highly efficient. An electric auxiliary heater ensures that the cabin heats up quickly.

The Audi Q5 hybrid quattro offers virtually the same equipment as its successful sibling models – the model series leads the European market in the mid-sized SUV segment. The options also include the advanced Audi driver assistance systems.

A new feature is Internet connectivity via the optional Bluetooth car phone online. A UMTS model connects to special services from Google and the World Wide Web, allowing the car to retrieve the latest news and weather information. Through the fast connection the hybrid SUV also downloads three-dimensional satellite images and aerial photos from Google Earth. These appear in a bird’s eye view on the monitor, and the computer fills in the roads. Another high-end feature is the WLAN hotspot, which allows passenger to connect up to eight terminal devices to the Internet.

Audi is set to unveil an attractive technical study – the A3 concept – at the Geneva Motor Show. The four-seat notchback sedan integrates the full breadth of the brand’s technological expertise – from the improved MMI operating system, to the high-tech infotainment system, to the drivetrain. A five-cylinder turbo developing 300 kW (408 hp), a seven-speed S tronic and quattro permanent all-wheel drive ensure thrilling dynamics along with high fuel efficiency.

Design and body
The Audi A3 concept is a four-seat notchback sedan. It measures 4.44 meters (14.57 ft) long and 1.84 meters (6.04 ft) wide, but just 1.39 meters (4.56 ft) high – proportions that underscore its dynamic character.

The design represents the typical Audi language of sporty elegance. The single-frame grille is integrated into the front end, giving it a sculptured look. Its frame is made of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP), and the transversely mounted, three-dimensional aluminum louvers create a visual effect that emphasizes the showcar’s width. The headlights merge with the beveled upper corners of the single-frame, forming a transition that marks the starting point of the prominently accentuated lines of the engine hood.

The headlights represent a new stage of evolution in LED technology, a groundbreaking innovation from Audi. They become broader as they extend outward, and a line underneath them makes them seem to float on air. Above the front spoiler is a full-length air intake, also made of CFRP, framed by a metal clasp. The spoiler features a splitter that raises the downforce on the front wheels.

When viewed from the side, too, the A3 concept is recognizable at first sight as an Audi. Harmonious proportions, taut, muscular surfaces and a low roof dome with fluid lines flowing into a flat, coupé-like C-pillar. The shoulder area transitions elegantly into the tailgate. Characteristic of Audi design, the greenhouse accounts for one-third of the height, while the sheet metal makes up the remaining two-thirds.

Powerfully flared fenders hint at the power of the engine. Two prominently elaborated lines accentuate the flank: the undercut tornado line beneath the window edge and the dynamic line above the sills. The outside mirrors, made of aluminum and CFRP, are perched on the top shoulder, just like on a sports car. The door handles with their brushed-aluminum clasps are recessed flush with the door. When the driver touches them, they power-extend.

The intelligent interplay between surfaces and lines also defines the tail end of the A3 concept. The broad, flat tail lights are sculptured and culminate in a point on the inside, and the tailgate bears an elegant spoiler edge. The rear apron includes a diffuser insert of CFRP and metal, which in turn surrounds the two large tailpipes for the exhaust system.

Ultra-modern components, design methods and joining techniques keep the body weight low. One example of this are the custom tailored blanks (panels of various thicknesses) in the floor area. The doors, engine hood and tailgate are made of aluminum. The extra stiff body provides the basis for the sedan’s precise handling, excellent vibrational comfort and low weight – the Audi A3 concept tips the scales at just 1,540 kilograms (3,395.12 lb).

Interior
The interior of the showcar is generously proportioned. The long wheelbase measuring 2.63 meters (8.63 ft) – a best-in-class figure in the premium compact segment – gives rear passengers on the two individual seats a pleasing amount of knee room. The front sport seats with prominent side bolsters are slim and elegant.

The cockpit also gives an impression of lightness and airiness. The horizontal lines emphasize its design. The instrument panel draws the driver in – typical of Audi. Defined in three dimensions, the large trim strip is made of solid aluminum and includes control functions. The high-quality sound system in the doors and on the rear shelf has aluminum trim panels. When the audio system is turned on, they extend a few millimeters, thus orchestrating a visual accompaniment to the system’s excellent sound.

On the center console four large, round air vents echoing a jet’s design catch the eye. The air flow is adjusted by pulling and pushing on the center axis of the vents. The control knobs for the automatic air conditioning system are located in the lower section of the center console on a boldly protruding dedicated control panel. Visually, they are reminiscent of airplane turbines.

Located behind the compact, flat-bottomed, three-spoke multifunction steering wheel are two analog dial instruments with black dials and red needles, complemented by additional kidney-shaped displays. Engraved rims made of brushed aluminum underscore their classy look. In between the two large round dials is the large, eight-inch display for the driver information system. The display is user-programmable – the driver can select the content to be displayed from an extensive menu.

The control panel for the MMI multimedia system is located on the center tunnel console. The surface of its large rotary pushbutton includes the touch pad, MMI touch. This new solution, which makes the already exemplary operation even more intuitive, will soon be introduced in series production at Audi. The ultra-thin MMI monitor power-extends out of the instrument panel, another feature taken from the full-size car class.

In terms of infotainment, the Audi A3 concept shows why the brand is leading the competition. A UMTS model provides full access to the Internet, allowing the car to retrieve convenient services from Google. Thanks to the WLAN hotspot, passengers can surf and send e-mail to their hearts’ content. Holders for iPads are installed on the back of the front seat backrests.

A classic notchback sedan, the Audi A3 concept boasts a large luggage compartment with a volume of 410 liters (14.48 cubic ft) and a low loading lip.

Drivetrain
The A3 concept has a five-cylinder engine under the hood that combines the Audi technologies of turbocharging and FSI gasoline direction injection. It develops a hefty 300 kW (408 hp) from a displacement of 2.5 liters. Its peak torque of 500 Nm (368.78 lb-ft) is available over a broad rev range between 1,600 and 5,300 rpm.

The five-cylinder powerplant unleashes a rousing soundscape – its typical sound pattern calls to mind the Audi sound of the 1980s and the huge motorsport successes of that period. Its performance is a complete homage to tradition: The A3 concept catapults from a dead stop to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 4.1 seconds, and its electronically governed top speed of 250 km/h (155.34 mph) is merely the official figure.

In terms of fuel consumption, the four-seater requires just 9.1 liters of fuel per 100 km (25.85 US mpg) and emits 212 grams CO2 per km (341.18 g/mile). A regulated oil pump, the intelligent Audi thermo-management system and a energy recovery system – technologies from the brand’s modular efficiency platform – all contribute to this high efficiency.

A compact seven-speed S tronic serves as the transmission. It comprises two transmission structures, which are operated by two clutches. Gears are alternately shifted by the two clutches – at lightning speed, comfortably, and without any perceptible interruption of traction.

The driver can operate the seven-speed S tronic in one automatic mode and one manual mode, using the paddles on the steering wheel to shift gears manually. Elegant touch control buttons on the center tunnel console are used to select drive positions R, N and D. These are backlit in red when it gets dark. Drive position P is automatically engaged when the electric parking brake is applied. The launch control system manages the sprint from a dead stop, furnishing explosive turbo power with minimal tire slip.

Power is effortlessly transmitted to the road via quattro permanent all-wheel drive. Its centerpiece is an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch at the end of the propeller shaft. When slip occurs at one of the axles, the clutch redirects the majority of the torque input to the wheels with the better grip.

Chassis
Derived from the current RS 3 Sportback, the chassis of the Audi A3 concept is fully capable of handling the power from the drive system at all times. The four-seater masters any type of curve with speed, stability and composure, turning spontaneously into corners going in and providing superior traction going out. Its self-steering response remains essentially neutral all the way up to the lofty handling limits.

The front suspension – a McPherson construction with a separate axle support – has a track measuring a full 1,572 millimeters (61.89 in). To a large extent, its components are made of aluminum. The rack-and-pinion steering is extremely efficient because its electromechanical drive system requires no energy when driving straight ahead.

The four-link rear suspension with its 1,542-millimeter (60.71-in) track is likewise fixed to a subframe. Its control arms made of high-strength steel enable the suspension to absorb longitudinal and lateral forces separately. The shock absorbers and coil springs are mounted separately from each other.

The Audi drive select dynamic handling system gives the driver five modes from which to select the engine characteristics, power steering and the seven-speed S tronic. The modes are comfort, auto, dynamic, individual and efficiency, the last of which is designed for maximum economy.

The imposing light-alloy rims measure 20 inches in diameter. In five twin-spoke design, they are made of CFRP and aluminum. The slender, recessed rims optimize ventilation. The tire format is 245/30 at the front and rear. The front brake disks are gripped by four-piston calipers. The ESP stabilization system has a Sport mode and can be completely deactivated. The parking brake is actuated electromechanically.

Just in time for the exhibition debut of the Audi RS 3 Sportback at the Geneva Motor Show, a new app will arrive on March 3rd that allows all iPhone owners to take the new Audi model for a test drive.

With the free racing game for the iPhone called Asphalt Audi RS 3, players can choose between two tracks (Bahamas and Tokyo), both of which feature thrilling graphics.

The iPhone app, which is available from the Apple App Store, was designed in partnership with Gameloft. Gameloft is the world’s biggest developer and publisher of video games for mobile devices. The sixth edition of the Asphalt racing game series, which has sold more than 20 million copies worldwide, has been available since December 2010.

Winning in the Asphalt Audi RS 3 game involves more than just driving over the finish line: with skilled driving maneuvers players can beat their competitors or explore hidden short cuts. “This is a way for our customers to get to know the new Audi RS 3 Sportback even before the official market launch,” said Lothar Korn, Head of Marketing Communications at Audi.

In the game, the youngest member of the Audi RS family can be controlled using the touch-screen or via tilt control, which the iPhone allows to be used as the steering wheel. Customized configuration of the car is also possible.

The Opel Ampera is set to establish an entirely new segment in the European automotive market. Scheduled to enter the market later this year, the five-door, four-seat Ampera is designed to provide all the benefits of an electric vehicle while eliminating range anxiety.

The production version of the Ampera will make its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show (March 3 – 13). Around 1,000 people across Europe have reserved an Ampera to date, with half of those being corporate customers.

The Ampera has already been chosen as the winner of numerous awards by media and the public. The revolutionary technical concept convinced the readers of Auto Zeitung, who awarded it the “Auto Trophy 2010” in the electric vehicle category. The Ampera was named runner up for the “Green Steering Wheel 2010”, a special category of the “Golden Steering Wheel”, by readers and the jury of Bild and Bild am Sonntag. And the respected jury of Auto Test magazine awarded it the “e-car award 2010” in the category “Innovation/Technical Concept of the Year”. Suitable for every kind of journey

The revolutionary Opel Ampera will be the first emission-free, electrically driven car in Europe suitable for everyday driving. Unlike a conventional battery-electric vehicle, the Ampera eliminates range anxiety. It gives drivers the confidence and peace of mind that a depleted battery will not strand them.

The battery is recharged in about four hours at 230V by plugging the vehicle's on-board charge system into a standard household outlet. Because the battery can be recharged conveniently, without the need for special charging equipment, most Amperas are likely to be driven in battery mode all the time. Independent research shows that around 80 percent of Europeans drive less than 60 kilometers per day, so the Ampera easily meets their requirements. For the first 40 - 80 kilometers (depending on terrain, driving style, and temperature), power is supplied by the electricity stored in the 16-kWh, lithium-ion battery. While driving on electricity delivered by the battery, the Ampera moves free of gas and tailpipe-emissions. If a longer trip is required, the gasoline-fueled engine can seamlessly extend the total driving range to more than 500 kilometers on a full tank. This full-performance, range-extending technology makes the Ampera the first electric car with the everyday convenience of a conventional automobile.

Four Drive Modes from Hold-charge to Sports for efficiency and driving fun

The extremely quiet 111 kW/150 hp electric motor delivers 370 Newton meters torque from a standstill. It accelerates the Ampera from zero to 100 km/h in around nine seconds and enables a maximum speed of 161 km/h.

Via a “Drive Mode” button in the center stack, the driver can choose Normal, Sport, Mountain or City modes. These modes optimize energy management according to the prevailing driving and road conditions.

The Normal mode is the default setting for the Ampera and is expected to be used most of the time to provide maximum efficiency. When the energy level of the battery drops below its state-of-charge operating window, the Ampera enters extended-range operation, during which the gasoline engine automatically runs to sustain the charge and enable extended-range travel. The battery’s state-of-charge is sustained by regenerative braking, allowing the gasoline generator to rest during long downhill stretches.

The Sport mode automatically reconfigures the accelerator pedal to provide a quicker response. While Sport mode doesn’t provide a higher power output, it does provide a more sensitive reaction to driver inputs.

The Mountain mode automatically adjusts the system to provide necessary power in mountainous environments, when the performance of conventional electric vehicles could be compromised. Mountain mode enables the range-extender to switch on, before the battery reaches its minimum state-of-charge. Drivers should select this mode after a full charge or 10 to 15 minutes before entering mountainous terrain to enable full vehicle capability up sustained grades.

The Hold-charge mode adapts battery management to the demands of modern commuter travel. Selecting Hold-charge mode engages the range-extender immediately, saving the energy currently stored in the battery. When Hold-charge mode is switched off, the range-extender stops and the Ampera is then able to use the energy saved in the battery for pure electric driving, for example in urban areas or restricted zones.

Lightweight construction with continuity: Audi milestones
Lightweight construction has long been a driving force at Audi. Development work on the ASF body began back in the early 1980s. Audi has been building cars with aluminum bodies since 1994 – with a high degree of continuity, in contrast to its competitors.

Audi Sport quattro (1984)
The Sport quattro is a brand icon. Beginning in 1984, Audi built 214 units by hand in order to homologize its new competition car for the Rally World Championship. The five-cylinder turbo, which displaced just 2.1 liters, produced 225 kW (306 hp) in the street version, making it one of a small group of extreme sports cars at the time.

The Sport quattro had a wheelbase that was 32 centimeters (1.05 ft) shorter than that of the model on which it was based, the Ur-quattro (original quattro). 4.16 meters (13.65 ft) long, it weighed just 1,300 kilograms (2,866.01 lb) thanks to extreme lightweight construction. Only the bodyshell and the doors of the “Shorty,” the latter taken from the Audi 80, were made of steel sheet. The rear hatch was made of a polyester material.

Most of the body components – the front and rear fenders, the front skirt, the hood, the outer shells of the B- and C-pillars, the roof and the rear skirt – were made of a material developed specifically for the project. This was a resin laminate into which multiple woven elements of aramid and glass fiber were embedded. Audi developed many new technologies for working with this material, from presses to high-pressure water cutting to joining with screws, rivets and adhesive.

The aramid composite material achieved nearly the same torsional rigidity as conventional steel sheet, but was almost three times lighter. The weight of the body was reduced by 64.2 kilograms (141.54 lb). The hood was additionally reinforced with carbon fiber in the area cutout for the intercooler. It cost DM 3,500 as an individual part.

The Audi A8 (1994)
Lightweight construction took on the rank of a strategic project at Audi in 1982. The objective meant reinventing the self-supporting body with a new material and a geometry specifically tailored to it.

The development work was extensive and resulted in 40 patents and patent applications in addition to broad-based fundamental expertise. In 1985, Audi presented the body of an Audi 100 made of aluminum but still using a traditional monocoque design. The concept sports cars from 1991, the Audi Avus quattro and the Audi quattro Spyder, also had skins of the light metal but underneath were still supporting frames.

The new technology was ready for series production in 1993, however. A shining silver showcar with an unpainted body of polished aluminum was on display at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. The predecessor to the A8 bore the designation ASF, the abbreviation for Audi Space Frame.

The production model that debuted the following year was the world’s first large-volume production car with a self-supporting aluminum body. The superstructure of the A8 weighed just 249 kilograms (548.95 lb) and featured the same construction that is still used today. Panels accounted for most of its 336 individual components, followed by the sections and castings. Assembly was performed roughly 75 percent by hand.

The Audi A2 (2000)
The Audi A2 was the second Audi ASF model. Just 3.83 meters (12.57 ft) long, it boasted agile performance and amazing efficiency. The base model of the small van weighed only 895 kilograms (1,973.14 lb). The A2 1.2 TDI, the world’s first five-door three-liter car, weighed just 825 kilograms (1,818.81 lb). Its average fuel consumption of 2.99 liters/100 km (78.67 US mpg) remains unsurpassed today.

The key factor in this was the aluminum body, which tipped the scales at just 156 kilograms (343.92 lb). Designed for higher volumes than the A8, it used important refinements and new developments in the areas of tools, casting and joining processes. The number of individual parts was reduced to 238. The B-pillar, for instance, comprised a single large casting. The B-pillar of the luxury sedan was still assembled from eight components.

Aluminum panels also accounted for the greatest share of semi-finished components in the A2, followed by sections and castings. The underbody frame was made up of straight extruded sections that were joined directly together by means of MIG welding (MIG = metal inert gas), eliminating the nodes required in the A8. Three joining processes, including state-of-the-art laser welding, sufficed for assembly. The degree of automation reached roughly 85 percent.

The Audi TT (2006)
The second generation of the TT features a groundbreaking Audi innovation – hybrid aluminum and steel construction. The front end, the floor and the superstructure of the compact sports car are made of aluminum, with deep drawn steel being used for the doors and the trunk lid. The rear section of the floor assembly, the tail panel and the bulkhead of the Roadster are made of high-strength steel. This material mix provides for an optimal distribution of axle loads and thus for dynamic handling.

The ASF body of the TT Coupé weighs in at 206 kilograms (454.15 lb); that of the TT Roadster at 251 kilograms (553.36 lb). Compared to the previous model with its steel body, the curb weight decreased by 20 to 90 kilograms (44.09 to 198.42 lb) depending on the model. Audi reversed the weight spiral. The material mix is dominated by aluminum, which accounts for 68 percent of the Coupé’s weight and 58 percent of the Roadster’s. In the TT Coupé, the aluminum fraction comprises 63 kilograms (138.89 lb) of panels, 45 kilograms (99.21 lb) of castings and 32 kilograms (70.55 lb) of extruded sections.

The ASF body of the Audi TT is the ideal solution for a sports car. Compared to the preceding model, static torsional rigidity increased by 50 percent in the Coupé and 100 percent in the Roadster. This lays the foundation for precise, dynamic handling, while also being responsible for the high vibrational comfort and superior crash safety. In 2006 Audi won the Euro Car Body Award, the world’s most important prize for innovative car body design, for the ASF body of the TT.

The Audi R8 (2007)
The ASF body of the R8 set new standards. The body is unmatched in the high-performance sports car segment in terms of lightweight quality – the relationship between size, weight and rigidity.

Weighing 210 kilograms (462.97 lb), the superstructure of the R8 Coupé makes extensive use of extruded sections, which account for 70 percent of the total. Vacuum-cast nodes account for 8 percent, and aluminum panels make up the remaining 22 percent. A magnesium engine frame provides added rigidity in the upper section of the rear end. Custom tailored blanks reinforce the center tunnel. The individual panels vary in thickness depending on where they are used.

Plastic is used for the R8’s front fenders and the sill liners. The hood of the Coupé is made of composite materials; the side blades are optionally available in carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP).

In the R8 Spyder (body weight: 216 kilograms (476.20 lb)), profiles dominate the mix even more clearly than in the Coupé, accounting for 75 percent. The structure of the open high-performance sports car integrates the rear side walls and the cover of the storage compartment for the top as load-bearing CFRP components.

Audi reduced the weight of the exclusive, top-of-the-line R8 GT by 100 kilograms (220.46 lb) to 1,525 kilograms (3,362.05 lb). Made of CFRP, the rear trunk lid, the back bumper and the side blades account for 13.3 kilograms (29.32 lb) of this; the thin aluminum cover over the luggage compartment is good for an addition 2.6 kilograms (5.73 lb). Glazings of thinner glass or polycarbonate shave off nine kilograms (19.84 lb).

In the passenger compartment, lightweight carpeting and a seat frame of glass-fiber-reinforced plastic reduce the weight by 7.9 and 31.5 kilograms (17.42 and 69.45 lb), respectively.

The Audi A8 (2010)
The third generation of the A8 once again features great advancements in the ASF principle. The material mix of the body, comprised of 251 individual parts, includes 13 different grades of aluminum. The superstructure also integrates ultra-high-strength B-pillars of hot-shaped steel – a groundbreaking step. The body of the sedan with the standard wheelbase weighs just 231 kilograms (509.27 lb); 10 kilograms (22.05 lb) more in the A8 L.

Besides the steel B-pillars, which account for 8 percent of the weight, aluminum castings and panels each account for 35 percent and extruded sections for 22 percent. The combined weight of the 25 castings, most of which are made of advanced alloys, is three kilograms (6.61 lb) less than with the previous model. Most of them are manufactured using the very high-precision vacuum casting process.

Audi has increased the strength of the higher-strength body components by as much as 25 percent, thereby reducing both material thickness and weight by up to 20 percent. The fusion alloy for the aluminum panels alone saves 6.5 kilograms (14.33 lb) of weight. Fifteen fusion panels are used for the load-bearing parts of the structure. The Euro Car Body Award that Audi received in late 2010 documents the innovation density of the A8 body.

The Audi A6 (2011)
The bodies of the new Audi A6 and the A7 Sportback are also best-in-class. A hybrid steel-aluminum construction, they weigh roughly 15 percent less than a comparable all-steel body. They are made up of more than 20 percent aluminum, making them roughly 30 kilograms (66.14 lb) lighter than that of the previous A6 model.

The hybrid concept, in which the aluminum components are largely concentrated in the front end, improves the axle load distribution. Most importantly, though, it provides the basis for systematic lightweight construction. Depending on the version, the A6 weighs as much as 80 kilograms (176.37 lb) less than its predecessor. Audi has reversed the weight spiral yet again.

The crossbar in the engine compartment and the cross-members behind the front and rear bumpers are aluminum sections. The front strut domes are aluminum castings. The integral subframe behind the instrument panel, the rear shelf, the bulkhead to the trunk, the cross-member in the trunk, the front fenders, the doors, the hood and the trunk lid are made of aluminum panels. A new pretreatment process ensures that the steel and aluminum components can be painted in exactly the same way.

The passenger compartment of both the A6 and the A7 Sportback includes components made of hot-shaped steel. They can be found in the transition from the front section of the car to the passenger cell, in the A-pillars and the roof arch, as reinforcements for the center tunnel and the side sills, at the transition of the side sills to the rear section of the car, as cross-bracings in the floor panel and as B-pillars. In many zones, such as the bulkhead cross-connection, Audi uses tailored blanks. These are sheets of different thicknesses that have been rolled in some cases to different thicknesses.

In some areas, the steel components in the body already follow the ASF principle. The A6 and the A7 Sportback represent the gradual transition from the monocoque design to the new Multimaterial Space Frame (see separate section).

Experience lightweight construction – test cars at Tech Day
The customer benefits directly from Audi’s lightweight construction – it makes the cars more efficient and more dynamic. These strengths can be experienced first hand in drives on the test track and on public highways at Tech Day.

Test 1: Audi A6 comparison
Two Audi A6 3.0 TDI quattro models – the outgoing model and the new successor model in a comparison test. Thanks to the systematic lightweight construction concept, the new sedan weighs up to 80 kilograms (176.37 lb) less than the predecessor model. The difference is clearly noticeable while driving. The new A6 seems a decisive tick sportier, more spontaneous and more agile in all criteria.

Test 2: Test drive with weight-optimized Audi TT
An Audi TTS Coupé model with a range of weight-optimizing measured acts as a technology platform which is already geared toward the next generation of the model series. The 2.0 TFSI produces 200 kW (272 hp) as standard and delivers its power to the quattro drivetrain via a six-speed S tronic transmission.

With its hybrid body, the production model of the TTS is already unusually light with a curb weight of only 1,470 kilograms (3,240.80 lb). In the prototype, add-on parts of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic, in particular the special lightweight seats and other individual components, save another 80 kilograms (220.46 lb), an effect that is most noticeable in the increased lateral dynamics.

Special features can also be found in the passenger compartment. The driving modes of the S tronic on the prototype are selected using buttons. The rings of the scales in the instrument cluster are illuminated in white in D mode, red in the sporty S mode.

Test 3: Driving experience with the technology of the Audi quattro concept showcar
An especially attractive technology platform can be experienced in the form of an Audi A5.

The lightweight 2.5 TFSI 5-cylinder turbocharged engine with 300 kW (408 hp), familiar from the quattro concept showcar, accelerates the test vehicle. The body of the is hand-built from aluminum components according to the ASF principle. Add-on parts such as the hood and the rear hatch are made of a carbon fiber composite material. Lightweight sport seats are installed up front. This one-off model weighs just 1,400 kilograms (3,086.47 lb).

Its power-to-weight ratio is 3.4 kilograms (8.16 lb) per hp, better than even that of the Audi RS 5, whose 4.2-liter V8 produces 331 kW (450 hp). The technology platform’s performance is awesome, when accelerating, when braking and especially when cornering.

The Audi quattro concept, of which a 1:4 scale model will be on display at Tech Day, is the ideal successor to the Audi Sport quattro from 1984. This is true for the compact length of 4.28 meters (14.04 ft), for the powerplant – a five-cylinder turbo with 300 kW (408 hp) – and for the low weight of around 1,300 kilograms (2,866.01 lb). Each hp only has to move 3.2 kilograms (7.05 lb) of weight, leading to exhilarating performance.

The quattro concept catapults from 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in just 3.9 seconds.

Unlike the 1980s classic, the Audi quattro concept has a body of aluminum. This is assembled in typical ASF fashion from extruded sections, pressure diecast components and aluminum panels.

The bodyshell weighs only 159 kilograms (350.53 lb), around 40 percent less than a comparable body made of steel sheet. The hood, the rear hatch and the moveable spoiler are made of a carbon fiber-reinforced composite.

The "Living Electric" display at the 2011 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) wasn't just an opportunity for visitors to ride in an electric vehicle – it also was a time for Ford engineers to learn more about the all-new Focus Electric.

"This was a win-win situation. While customers were able to learn about how an electric vehicle works and rides, we could pull up data and find out more about the Focus Electric they were in at the very same time," said Shawn Lightner, Ford global electrified products program manager. "We thought this would be a perfect opportunity to discover even more about how the cars perform using the data acquisition technology employed on other development vehicles."

An onboard data acquisition system was connected to the car computer, where critical information of what was happening while the vehicle was running or charging could be transmitted. Ford engineers were then able to go online and pull up data via a website to monitor information about the vehicle, while customers were riding in it.

"The Ford engineering team was able to capture and gain insight on how the batteries were performing from charging to depletion, the range the Focus Electric was getting per charge, as well as data on how the car was doing overall," explained Lightner.

At the Living Electric display on the Ford stand, more than 10,000 NAIAS visitors took a ride in a Focus Electric on an elevated track 20 feet high, 208 feet in length and 71 feet in diameter. Hands-on technology displays, digital tutorials and conversations with experts also helped people learn how different types of electrified vehicles will fit various lifestyles.

The all-new Focus Electric – Ford's first-ever all-electric passenger car – is a zero-emissions, gasoline-free version of the company's popular global Focus model. Focus Electric is designed to offer enough range to cover the majority of daily driving habits of Americans. A full recharge is expected to take three to four hours at home with the 240-volt charge station.

Focus Electric introduces new features and technologies – including a unique version of the MyFord Touch™ driver connect system especially for electric vehicles, a new value charging feature powered by Microsoft and a smartphone app called MyFord Mobile that helps plug-in owners control their vehicles remotely.

Electrification is an important piece of Ford's overall product sustainability strategy. Ford's aggressive strategy includes the launch of five new electrified vehicles in North America by 2012 and Europe by 2013. In addition to Focus Electric, Ford launched the Transit Connect Electric small commercial van in 2010 and will introduce C-MAX Hybrid, a second next-generation lithium-ion battery hybrid and the C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid in 2012.

Audi is the automobile industry’s worldwide pioneer in lightweight construction. Created nearly three decades ago, the Audi Sport quattro had a body in which aramid fiber-reinforced plastic replaced many sheet metal components.

The first Audi A8 featuring the Audi Space Frame (ASF) rolled off the assembly line in 1994. Since then, the brand has continuously produced lightweight cars with aluminum bodies, periodically setting new highlights along the way.

Today Audi is reversing the weight spiral with its production models.
Depending on the engine, the TT weighs as much as 90 kilograms (144.84 lb) less than its predecessor; the new A6 up to 80 kilograms (128.75 lb) less. The Audi R8 GT high-performance sports car tips the scales at just 1,525 kilograms (2,454.25 lb), and that includes its quattro permanent all-wheel drive system.

The test cars that Audi is making available for Tech Day allow these strengths to be experienced first hand in direct comparisons between models with different weights.

One particularly intriguing vehicle is the weight-optimized Audi A5 with its fascinating five-cylinder engine. It is a technology platform for the showcar, the Audi quattro concept.

The 2011 Hyundai Sonata continues to establish itself as the new standard for midsize sedans as it was named the inaugural recipient of the "Family Vehicle of the Year" award by the Midwest Automotive Media Association (MAMA).

The Sonata beat out top competitors, including the 2010 Audi A3 TDI, 2011 Chevrolet Cruze, 2011 Honda Odyssey, 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, 2011 Kia Optima, 2010 Kia Sorento, 2011 Kia Sportage, and the 2010 Suzuki Kizashi.

"A family car is an important purchase as it needs to serve families reliably and at a reasonable price. MAMA members pooled their collective knowledge and experience to pick the best family vehicle from a strong group of recent releases, and the Hyundai Sonata came out on top," said award coordinator Kirk Bell.

MAMA is a group of automotive journalists that created the award to help consumers make informed decisions about which car is the best choice for their family. To qualify for the MAMA "Family Vehicle of the Year," vehicles must have four doors, start at less than $50,000, appear at either the MAMA spring or fall rally, and be new or significantly updated since the summer of 2010. During the MAMA rallies, a total of 75 automotive journalists voted for his or her top choices for the award, and the Sonata was the clear winner.

"The 2011 Hyundai Sonata is a game-changing midsize sedan with a fuel-efficient four-cylinder engine lineup and fluidic sculpture design," said Scott Margason, director, Product Planning, Hyundai Motor America.

"The MAMA 'Family Vehicle of the Year' award demonstrates its appeal to families due to its advanced safety technology, large interior and cargo space, plus numerous high-tech options."

The 2011 Hyundai Sonata features some of the most advanced technological options, such as a navigation system with voice activation and an interactive touch screen as well as XM NavTraffic(r) and XM Data Services, integrated Bluetooth, satellite radio, and a HomeLink transceiver.

U.S. Army shows off green vehicles at 2011 Chicago Auto Show

The U.S. Army booth at the 2011 Chicago Auto Show will highlight two hybrid powered combat vehicles that offer both fuel economy and stealth.

The Quantum Technologies Clandestine Extended Range Vehicle (CERV) and the Future Tactical Truck System (FTTS) represent the Army initiative to provide next generation Joint Light Tactical Vehicles and high performance light duty off-road hybrid trucks.

The CERV’s target mission, according to Quantum, "would be related to special operations-type missions involving reconnaissance, surveillance, targeting, search and rescue and assist with field rescue operations."

Features of the CERV include the 2nd generation advanced all-wheel-drive diesel hybrid electrical power-train that produces 5,000 foot-pounds of torque. With hybrid technology, designers say the vehicle reduces fuel consumption by 25 percent thus reducing the number of resupply vehicles needed during military operations.

It has the capacity to carry three soldiers with gear, boasts a 600-mile driving range utilizing the external fuel tanks, incorporates a polycarbonate windshield and includes an onboard electrical winch capable of pulling 10,000 lbs. The CERV has a top speed of 80 miles-an-hour, can climb up to 60 percent grades, has the capacity to forge water up to 21 inches deep, has a turning capacity of 30 feet and has a maximum towing capacity of up to 5,000 lbs.

The FTTS was designed, according to engineers, to replace the existing wheeled vehicle fleet that proved unable to keep up with current combat operational tempo due to its cumbersome logistical footprint, poor C-130 deployability and poor fuel economy.

Foremost in the design of the FTTS was fuel efficiency, since experts determined that 70 percent of the battlefield logistics involves providing fuel. Fuel can cost run from $30 per gallon when delivered by truck and up to $400 a gallon when delivered by helicopters. The FTTS’s hybrid electric power-train doubles the driving range of existing vehicles from 300 to 600 miles. The new trucks would also decrease the number of vehicles required to move cargo, equipment and personnel. Fewer trucks also translates to fewer mechanics needed and fewer tools required since the advanced software and sensors of the FTTS greatly enhances its reliability.
