Honda Civic Tops U.S. Vehicle Crash Test

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety said that small cars fared better during the tests due to a “small overlap” compared to the tests ran on small sport-utility vehicles back in May, when they were tested by the Institute.

In a new U.S. vehicle crash test designed for small cars, half of the 12 cars tested in a deadly front end collision passed with “acceptable” or “good” scores, while the rest were just marginal or poorly rated.

Right now, the Civic is the top selling model in the United States, according to AutoData Corp. Both two and four door Civics scored the highest on the crash test ratings with “good” marks. Honda has been a leader in safety, insuring their vehicles withstand certain types of crashes that are considered deadly.

Kia’s Forte scored the lowest in restraints and vehicle structures. The Ford Focus, Hyundai’s Elantra and Toyota’s Silica all ranked in the “marginal” category, along with the Chevrolet’s Cruze and Sonic.

Last year was the first year that deaths on the road increased since 2005, rising 5.3 percent according to the U.S. National Highway Safety Administration. The Insurance Institute hopes this new crash tests encourages automakers to help insure the safety of their drivers to help reduce the deaths that occur on the road.
