Mercedes SL65 AMG – New York motor show review

Highlights are pretty much as before. The new SL65 is powered by an evolved version of the previous carā€™s twin-turbocharged 6-litre V12, which puts out a walloping 621bhp along with ā€“ wait for it ā€“ 738lb ft of torque.

Thatā€™s an increase of nearly 20 percent over the previous ā€™65, and mean that it will be the quickest SL yet.

The official 3.9-second 0-62mph time and limited 186mph top speed only tell part of the story ā€“ we can anticipate that, in straight lines at least, this SL will likely have the ability to show its posher SLS sister a clean pair of heels.

Ceramic brakes will be optional, and Mercedes has finally managed to engineer a seven-speed automatic transmission capable of handling the SL65ā€™s astonishing torque figure ā€“ the previous car had to make do with the older-tech five-speeder.

5-liter supercharged V8 engine and will reach 60 mph in 4.0 seconds, and a top speed of 186 mph (electronically limited)2. The F-TYPE S Coupe and F-TYPE Coupe are powered by 3-liter supercharged V6 engines in 380hp and 340hp forms respectively, giving 0-60 mph in 4.8/5.1 seconds and top speeds of 171/161 mph2.

The F-TYPE Coupe visual message is defined by three key ā€˜heart linesā€™, that visual message beginning with the formidable grille. It is from the twin ā€˜shark gillā€™ openings that sit either side of the grille that the essential first heart line ā€“ which mirrors the design of the F-TYPE Convertible ā€“ flows and begins to take shape. Running up through the headlamp, and accentuated by the LED ā€˜J bladeā€™ signature running lamps, the line then arcs up over the front wheel arch before dropping elegantly as it runs through the door, washing out into the muscular rear haunch.
