Ford Introduces New Seven-Passenger People Mover with a Difference: Transit Connect Wagon First to Exceed 30 MPG

Ford Introduces New Seven-Passenger People Mover with a Difference: Transit Connect Wagon First to Exceed 30 MPG

Ford Transit Connect Wagon
Ford Transit Connect Wagon

Ford, the most fuel-efficient full-line manufacturer, introduces the first seven-passenger people mover expected to break the 30 mpg-plus highway barrier with the all-new Transit Connect Wagon, which drives like a car, has the flexibility of a utility and can haul the payload of a full-size pickup.

Transit Connect Wagon gives young families and people on the go the fun-to-drive and efficient vehicle they’ve been looking for,” said Mark Fields, Ford’s President of The Americas. “It’s an all-new, smaller seven-seater that has better mileage than larger vans and creates a segment of its own. Customers also will love the unique combination of style, adaptability and affordability this wagon brings.”

Transit Connect Wagon is offered in two wheelbase lengths, in five- and seven-passenger configurations, and in XL, XLT and Titanium series levels. No other wagon in the market today offers the convenience of fold-flat seating, at least a 1,200-pound payload and more than 100 cubic feet of cargo space.

When properly equipped, this versatile wagon is approved to tow up to 2,000 pounds, 500 pounds more than a four-cylinder Toyota Highlander SUV.

Have it your way

Transit Connect Wagon offers customers a choice between two fuel-efficient four-cylinder engines – a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and an optional 1.6-liter EcoBoost® that is estimated to deliver 30 mpg-plus on the highway. This powertrain makes Transit Connect Wagon the gas mileage leader among seven-passenger vehicles.

Both engines come mated to a convenient six-speed automatic transmission, geared for around-town responsiveness and low-rpm highway cruising.

Transit Connect Wagon is available in a wide variety of configurations and series levels, offering unexpected features in a high-value package with low operating costs.

This stylish, contemporary design is offered in two wheelbase lengths, a choice of five- or seven-passenger seating arrangements, and offers meaningful options like a full-glass panoramic roof, rear view camera, 6.5-inch touch screen display with navigation, and SYNC® with MyFord Touch® – Ford’s highly acclaimed voice-activated communications and entertainment system.

Transit Connect Wagon’s global design includes premium cues throughout such as available full body-color exterior accents with jewel-like chrome trim and high-gloss interior trim pieces. A range of seating surfaces, from luxurious leather, comfortable cloth and heavy-duty vinyl, is available to suit the specific needs of a wide variety of potential customers.

The all-new Transit Connect Wagon builds on the foundation of reliability and durability established by the current Transit Connect compact van. Introduced in North America in 2009, Transit Connect has become the must-have vehicle for small business proprietors, thanks to its unmatched combination of payload and cargo capacities, adaptability, fuel efficiency, maneuverability and overall ease of driving.

Transit Connect was recognized as an innovative “white space” vehicle – literally carving out a new category in the market – by the automotive industry press corps when it was named North American Truck of the Year in January 2010 at the North American International Auto Show.

Now selling at a pace of 35,000 units per year, Transit Connect has become a favorite of small businesses, corporate fleets, taxi operators and a few individualistic owners who find its combination of a car-like ride and the cargo capacity of a van just right for their personal use.

“The all-new Transit Connect Wagon will expand the personal-use audience for this versatile nameplate by offering up to seven-passenger capacity across three rows of seating in a fully trimmed interior,” said Hau Thai-Tang, Ford vice president of Global Engineering, Global Product Development. “It has an extensive selection of comfort, convenience and connectivity options, and a full complement of safety features – making it a modern, family-friendly alternative to oversized minivans.”

All Transit Connect Wagon models feature first-row frontal, pelvis and side airbags, with first-, second- and third-row side curtain airbags in long-wheelbase models. Short-wheelbase versions get first- and second-row side curtain airbags.

Ford’s award-winning MyKey® programmable ignition key enables restricting maximum vehicle speed and audio system volume, bringing additional peace of mind to both parents and fleet administrators alike.

Transit Connect Wagon even offers a child observation mirror so parents can keep track of children safely belted in second- and third-row seats.

Infinite adaptability
Inside, the Transit Connect Wagon package is a rolling showcase for adaptability in hauling both people and cargo.

From its 60/40 three-passenger second-row bench seat through fold-flat second- and third-row seating with third-row independent fore-and-aft sliding capability, Transit Connect Wagon quickly adapts to accommodate multiple combinations of people and cargo.

Also available is an electric windshield defroster, making short work of icy windshields in wintry conditions and when parking Transit Connect Wagon on the street.

Euro NCAP latest results – Dacia Lodgy – Dacia budgets on safety

Euro NCAP latest results – Dacia budgets on safety

 Dacia Lodgy
 Dacia Lodgy

Euro NCAP releases the results of 15 cars and rewards several new advanced driver assistance technologies under its Advanced assessment scheme.

The cars rated are: Dacia Lodgy; FIAT 500L; Ford Fiesta; Ford Kuga; Hyundai Santa Fe; Mercedes-Benz A-Class; Mitsubishi Outlander; Opel Mokka; SEAT Leon; the Skoda Rapid and its twin, the SEAT Toledo; Subaru Forester; the new Range Rover; Volvo V60 Plug-In Hybrid; and the seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf.

All cars have been awarded five stars apart from the Dacia Lodgy, rated as a three star vehicle.

Whereas three stars may satisfy Dacia’s own limited ambitions, consumers are once again called upon to opt for safety, with plenty of other vehicles in this category scoring five stars this year. At a time when several manufacturers are scoring almost full marks in one or more areas of assessment, the Lodgy performed below average in all areas of safety.

In the frontal impact, the screen pillar was heavily deformed at the top of the windscreen and the roof was bent in front of the B-pillar. The rear passenger floor panel and tunnel were completely separated, extending into the driver##Q##s footwell and the transmission tunnel was deformed between the front seats. In pedestrian protection, the Lodgy’s score of 44 percent compares unfavourably with other cars in this release, all of which scored more than 60 percent.

I also recommend this article  2012 Worthersee Tuning Tour

The child protection score of 77 percent is unexceptional and does not live up to the self-acclaimed “family vehicle” reputation. Finally, Dacia has decided not to make electronic stability control as standard equipment, exploiting the last possible opportunity before the technology became mandatory.

Dr Michiel van Ratingen, Secretary General of Euro NCAP, said: “It is disappointing to see the Lodgy do badly in our tests, especially coming just a week after the Sandero, branded a Renault in South America, was given a poor one star rating by Latin NCAP. The Lodgy is a budget vehicle and customers will accept compromises in comfort and performance, but not safety. Euro NCAP believes that occupants’ safety should be paramount, regardless of how much they pay for their vehicle.”

At the other end of the cost scale, the Range Rover and the Volvo V60 Plug-In Hybrid have both performed well. The V60 Plug-In Hybrid has scored very similarly to its conventionally-engined counterpart, assessed last year, despite the hybrid powertrain adding nearly 350 kg.

In contrast, the Range Rover has shed some kilograms, weighing over 200 kg less than the car previously tested by Euro NCAP. Euro NCAP understands that, despite generally good results and a five star rating, the Range Rover will soon be equipped with an improved head restraint to bring whiplash protection in line with expectations for a car of this quality.

I also recommend this article  The All-New 2014 Chevrolet Impala

The new Golf has scored similarly to its predecessor in most areas but sets a new benchmark by including several advanced driver assistance technologies.

The Golf is available with a Multi Collision Brake system, Front Assist and Proactive Occupant Protection, all newly rewarded by Euro NCAP Advanced, as well as Lane Assist. However, despite its impressive array of advanced systems, the car misses out on a standard-fit rear seatbelt reminder, a feature which is commonplace in many cars today.

Other cars fitted with advanced driver technologies are Mercedes-Benz’s entry-level car, the A-Class, and the Ford Fiesta. The A-Class gets Collision Prevention Assist and Attention Assist as standard equipment, with PRE SAFE available as an option. The Fiesta is offered with MyKey, a programmable key system that allows some safety-critical characteristics of the car to be tailored to particular drivers.

For the Fiesta, that may allow parents to help their children drive responsibly, with limits on maximum speed and more insistent seatbelt reminders. Dr Michiel van Ratingen: “Programmable keys open up a whole new range of possibilities, not just for parents and their children.

The technology will also be of interest to companies with safe-driving policies and I look forward to more widespread application of this sort of system in the future.”

The Street and Racing Technology brand team is extremely proud that our hand-built-in-Detroit, flagship supercar is back and ready to take on the performance-car world,” said Ralph Gilles, President and CEO – Street and Racing Technology Brand and Motorsports, Chrysler Group LLC.

Beyond being the flagship for the new SRT brand, the launch of the 2013 Viper proves that we simply would not let the performance icon of the Chrysler Group die. Willed to live on by a very special group of performance enthusiasts inside the company and across Viper Nation, this SRT team under our new leadership was challenged to not just continue the legendary Viper, but to create the fifth generation of our world-class supercar that would showcase the very best we have to offer.

For the 2013 model year, two new models of the iconic supercar will be hand-built at the Conner Avenue Assembly Plant in Detroit – the Viper’s home since 1995. Both SRT Viper and SRT Viper GTS models offer new interior and exterior designs incorporating premium materials and new exterior surfaces with aerodynamically functional details that are beautifully integrated into the high-tech carbon fiber and aluminum skin. On the inside, designers and engineers strived to rethink all its touch points and upgrade all its material appointments and technologies.

“The SRT Viper model offers a perfect blend of extreme performance and a deliberate preservation of what has become the iconic DNA of the Viper,” Gilles added. “We strove to deliver a supercar that continues to bring the driver as close as possible to the machine.”

The SRT Viper GTS builds on the DNA of the SRT Viper model with more technologically advanced solutions, like its driver-selectable two-mode suspension system that allows this world-class car to find new limits on the track while also opening up its envelope as a more mature evolution of the classic, extreme performance formula. Designed and built with premium features and materials inside and out, the Viper GTS will compete with the best performance vehicles in the world – and do so with a wide range of creature comforts, advanced drivetrain and interior technologies.

“We’ve purposely evolved the iconic soul and raw performance formula that Viper has maintained over the years,” Gilles said. “Our returning customers will see the world-class levels of pride, quality and hand-built craftsmanship built into the 2013 Viper. With two price classes of the SRT Viper and SRT Viper GTS, we have offerings for both the traditional core Viper customer and for the new customer who wants the same performance in a package with more technology and premium creature comforts.”

Awe-inspiring V-10 powertrain

The heart and soul of the 2013 SRT Viper is its venerable, handcrafted, all-aluminum 8.4-liter, mid-front V-10 overhead-valve engine.

Improvements for 2013 include an ultra-high-flow, lightweight composite intake manifold; high-strength, forged pistons; sodium-filled exhaust valves; new catalysts to ease backpressure and an aluminum flywheel that reduces reciprocating losses. Approximately 25 pounds have been shaved from the fully dressed engine.
Performance ratings for the SRT-engineered V-10 Viper are 640 horsepower and 600 lb.-ft. of torque – the most torque of any naturally aspirated sports-car engine in the world.

The Tremec TR6060 six-speed manual transmission has been improved with closer gear ratios and a final drive ratio that has been shortened to 3.55 from 3.07. The shifter throw also is shorter. As a result, the 2013 Viper models will be more engaging to drive. Its top speed of 206 mph is now achieved through 6th gear with maximum engine speed (redline) at 6,200 rpm.

Outstanding ride, handling and capability

Starting with a stiffer structure that provides 50 percent more torsional rigidity, the 2013 SRT Viper chassis benefits from numerous enhancements – many learned through racing efforts with Viper GTS-R and Competition Coupe models.

Major upgrades include the addition of a new aluminum x-brace under the hood that ties the suspension pickup points to the magnesium cowl super casting. This benefits torsional rigidity and stiffness. A new aluminum impact beam at the front of the car contributes to overall mass savings and improved weight distribution, while providing excellent crashworthiness.

Structurally, many chassis components were reworked to take advantage of new materials able to accommodate reduced thickness and complex shapes without compromising structural rigidity. The result is an overall weight savings of approximately 100 pounds.

I also recommend this article  Volkswagen is launching the new Golf 7

At the rear, the suspension has been re-engineered with the toe link moved forward of the axle for better tow control and dynamic stability.

A new, driver-selectable two-mode suspension system, featuring Bilstein DampTronic Select shock absorbers with both street and track settings, is standard on GTS models.

For 2013, SRT Viper models ride on standard Pirelli P Zero, Z-rated tires with substantially improved overall response, cold-weather performance, and enhanced grip and steering feel, regardless of road surface – while also broadening the performance envelope.

For the first time, standard safety technologies such as electronic multistage stability control and traction control help to maximize traction performance at virtually any speed and driving environment.

While every SRT Viper leaves the factory floor ready to take on any on-road or on-track challenge, the available Track Package further enhances its capability by elevating at-limit performance. Slotted two-piece lightweight rotors from StopTech replace the original equipment, while ultra-lightweight multi-spoke Sidewinder II wheels wrapped in high-performance Pirelli P Zero Corsa “racing-type” compound tires further reduce unsprung weight at all four corners. Selecting the Track Package also slices 57 pounds from the vehicle’s curb weight.

All 2013 Viper models will come with a steering-wheel-mounted launch-control switch, allowing for optimal acceleration from standing starts.

Benchmark braking

Brake performance for the 2013 SRT Viper is engineered to provide shorter stopping distances, better modulation, improved durability and balanced brake performance without fading under extreme conditions.

Each corner features four-piston Brembo brakes with fixed-aluminum calipers and vented rotors boasting a diameter of 355 mm by 32 mm. Brake calipers are forged. All surfaces are machined for full weight optimization. The calipers are among the stiffest available. Heat distortion is nearly eliminated, even under the most demanding braking conditions.

The available SRT Track Package features lightweight and slotted two-piece rotors from StopTech.

New premium materials, craftsmanship and technologies

The all-new, driver-oriented interior cabins of the SRT Viper models have been totally revamped for 2013. Superior craftsmanship, premium material appointments and performance-oriented technologies are evident throughout.

For the first time, all major interior surfaces are sewn and wrapped with additional padding applied in comfort areas. On the Viper GTS model, all surfaces are fully leather-skinned. Standard accent colors are applied to the seats, doors, center console and stitching.

Quality fit and finish is showcased across the lineup by details such as the triple paint-finished gun-metal appliqués on the cluster bezel, HVAC outlets, window-switch bezels, shifter base, park-brake bezel and the integrated passenger grab-handle on the center console.

Standard high-performance racing seats from Sabelt feature a lightweight Kevlar/fiberglass shell created by a state-of-the-art resin transfer-molding technology for mass reduction and long-term durability. Both driver and passenger enjoy improved comfort from thigh support and deep side-bolsters designed to match the extreme lateral acceleration capabilities of the SRT Viper.

Seating positions in the 2013 SRT Viper models are 20 mm lower for more room and enhanced performance-driving ergonomics. Seat travel is extended by 90mm overall, which enables expanded seating options from a more rearward positioned bulkhead. For the first time, seat height can be adjusted by up to 40 mm – manually on the SRT model and power-controlled on the GTS.

The new 2013 Viper is the most spacious model in the history of the nameplate. The floor pan and bulkhead have been extended approximately 90 mm to provide improved legroom and more rearward seat track movement.

A 7-inch, full-color, customizable instrument cluster – with its full-time analog tachometer – is designed specifically for the 2013 SRT Viper.

The dominant center tachometer display features an animated readout that glows red and shows off the new “Stryker” logo when engine rpm approaches redline, safely alerting the driver to upshift.

Drivers can configure the tachometer to display their last shift point and a peak rpm hold marker can be set up for optimum performance. Views include tach-only or tach with digital speed readout.

The new customizable instrument cluster provides an unmatched presentation of the exclusive SRT Performance Pages’ statistics and feedback to the driver, including 0-to-60 mph; 0-to-100 mph; eighth- and quarter-mile elapsed times; braking distance; instant g-force measurement readouts and top-speed performance.

The 8.4-inch Uconnect radio doubles as a display for SRT Performance Pages content, such as quarter-mile elapsed time and speed. Data also can be stored for future reference.

Uconnect Access provides new level of connectivity

The 2013 SRT Viper lineup features the new Uconnect Access in-vehicle connectivity system that links drivers to emergency services, as well as richer information and entertainment options – all via improved graphics.

Viper customers can choose between two Uconnect Media Centers – Uconnect 8.4A and Uconnect 8.4AN – which provide a range of new features and multiple ways to control media. The system balances the convenience of an 8.4-inch touchscreen with the reassurance of tactile knobs for common functions such as radio tuning volume adjustment. Touchscreen buttons along the bottom of the screen enable easy access to the radio, climate controls, navigation and phone. Breakthrough voice-text capability is enabled via voice command.

Pairing the vehicle with a compatible Bluetooth-equipped phone featuring the Message Access Profile (MAP) enables handsfree calling and activates advanced text-messaging protocols that:
Announces receipt of a text message sent to the device
Audibly identifies the sender
“Reads” the message aloud
Leveraging Chrysler Group’s partnership with Sprint, the driver can access cloud-based voice recognition technology that converts the spoken word into verbatim text messages. Communication is limited only by the user’s vocabulary – no need to let go of the steering wheel or learn lists of “canned” responses, as required by competitive systems.

Similarly, the new Viper’s navigation system affords the use of continuous, single-sentence instructions, such as: “Navigate to 800 Chrysler Drive, Auburn Hills, Michigan.”

Not sure where you need to go? Ask Bing. The powerful search engine will find restaurants, theaters, airports and other landmarks. Choose a destination and Uconnect Access will plot a route on command.

I also recommend this article  2014 Chevrolet Cruze with Turbo Diesel

The system also raises the security bar, using its embedded cellular connection to establish direct contact with 9-1-1 dispatchers at the push of a button. A second button connects vehicle occupants with Uconnect help, Chrysler Group customer service or roadside assistance. (Both buttons are located on the Viper’s rear-view mirror.)

Additional peace of mind comes in the form or theft-alarm notification, stolen-vehicle assistance and a smartphone app. The latter remotely locks and unlocks doors, flashes lights, sounds the horn and pinpoints vehicle location in places such as crowded parking lots.

Once behind the wheel, its sculpted contours welcome a driver’s grip. The steering wheel also is home to a host of finger-tip mounted controls for audio, Uconnect features and launch control.

SiriusXM Travel Link, available with the Uconnect 8.4AN system, provides premium data services and information to make every trip more efficient. SiriusXM Traffic, also only available with Uconnect 8.4AN, works with the vehicle’s navigation system to display traffic speed, traffic flow and accident information to assist travel through congested areas.

An expanded SiriusXM channel lineup is available on both Uconnect systems and includes programming exclusive to Chrysler Group, including the new SiriusXM Latino channels, an auto industry first.

A range of Harman Kardon surround-sound systems are available across the SRT Viper lineup that features the latest in audio system technology. All Harman Kardon audio systems include a high-voltage class D amplifier with tracking power supply and up to 12 channels of amplification. The Harman Kardon system with exclusive Logic 7 surround-sound processing is available in the Viper GTS model with a total of 18-speakers, including four subwoofers located behind the seats. All Harman Kardon systems in the 2013 SRT Viper lineup include high-performance, high-efficiency GreenEdge technology loudspeakers that are extremely light and include rare earth magnets. The magnets inside each speaker ensure efficient speaker operation and enhanced performance. The audio system is powered by a 35-volt tracking power supply – so the new and improved sound system achieves more than double the acoustic power of the current system.

The all-new, timeless exterior design blends contemporary execution with evolutionary refinement.

All-new carbon-fiber hood, roof, decklid and aluminum door panels are firsts for SRT Viper models resulting in significant weight reduction, improved high-speed stability and a .369 drag coefficient while still achieving negative lift.

The forward-hinged hood carries the redesigned Viper badge – aptly named “Stryker” by the Viper Club of America – positioned in the center; and offers unobtrusive access to several service points and the SRT-engineered V-10 powerplant.

The classical low-stance and the extreme cab-rearward proportions that have become the unmistakable silhouette of the iconic supercar, return on the 2013 SRT Viper models along with the dramatic fender “gills” – another traditional Viper design cue that helps to extract heat from the engine compartment.

The 2013 Viper models feature a contemporary take on the traditional “double-bubble” roof configuration that maximizes headroom for the driver and passenger while maintaining a low frontal area – allowing additional room for helmets during recreational competitive driving.

Dual-function, bi-xenon projector headlamps are tightly packaged with white light-emitting diode (LED) daytime running lamps and LED turn signals in a sinister “snake eye” configuration.

Functional “blisters” incorporated into the 70 mm projector headlamp lenses create a three-dimensional view that gives Viper a distinctive glare.

The lower-front grille is purposefully designed as an evolution of the traditional Viper low-profile cooling opening configuration and discretely carries a refined V-shape structure.

The exhaust system continues to exit forward of the rear wheels and now carries further refinement with cast aluminum, sill-mounted exhaust bezels.

For the first time, the 2013 SRT Viper models carry LED taillamps that integrate stop-and-turn illumination in one element. Snakeskin texture in the lens carries the surface work seen in the gills and hood textures. With dark-masked lenses, the horizontal lamps appear dark until the LED elements fire. Each lamp carries 50 LEDs that provide a unified “crystallized” illumination effect.

The five-spoke, forged-aluminum “Rattler” wheel design on the 2013 Viper model is available with fully polished (standard), fully painted Hyper Black or fully painted Matte Black finishes.

The Viper GTS has a split six-spoke forged-aluminum “Venom” wheel design with three available finishes, including polished face with graphite-painted pockets (standard), fully painted Hyper Black or fully painted Matte Black.

Available SRT Track Package wheels are ultra-lightweight, track-ready wheels in Hyper Black or Matte Black finishes.

For 2013, a mixture of classic Viper exterior paint shades have been reformulated, while new colors are also being introduced during a multistage painting process that results in show-car like finishes.

Six exterior color choices are offered on the SRT Viper models including: Adrenaline Red, Venom Black, Bright White, Gunmetal Pearl, Race Yellow and Shadow Blue Pearl. The SRT Viper GTS model receives an expanded exterior color palette with the availability of Stryker Red Tri-Coat Pearl and GTS Blue.

Two distinctive body stripe configurations are offered. The SRT Viper is available with a pair of tapered stripes starting on the clamshell hood and making their way onto the roof and finishing on the rear hatch. The SRT Viper GTS model is available with a pair of wide stripes running the length of the coupe from front to rear fascia.

Both stripe configurations are expertly applied in the paint booth before the main body color. Only after the paint is cured, a final clear coat is used to ensure the stripes are an integral part of the finished product.

Exterior stripe color packages include: Black Venom, Billet Silver and Gunmetal Pearl. Bright White body-length stripes are being used exclusively on the 2013 SRT Viper GTS Launch Edition model.

Manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) for the 2013 SRT Viper model is $97,395 (excluding $1,995 destination), while MSRP for the 2013 SRT Viper GTS model is $120,395 (excluding $1,995 destination).

Knight Rider’s KITT on the loose

Knight Rider##Q##s KITT on the loose

KITT is the short name of two fictional characters from the adventure TV series Knight Rider.

While having the same acronym, the KITTs are two different entities: one known as the Knight Industries Two Thousand, which appeared in the original TV series Knight Rider, and the other as the Knight Industries Three Thousand, which appeared first in the two-hour 2008 pilot film for a new Knight Rider TV series and then the new series itself.

In both instances, KITT is an artificially intelligent electronic computer module installed in a highly advanced, very mobile, robotic automobile: the original KITT (Knight Industries Two Thousand) as a 1982 Pontiac Trans Am, and the second KITT (Knight Industries Three Thousand) as a 2008-2009 Ford Shelby GT500KR. This is the history of Kitt ….

… but now … right now … it was taken from a warehouse in California and it appears that KITT is heading to San Francisco and will be appearing in various locations across the city.

Jeep Freedom Drive I is an available full-time, active four-wheel-drive system with lock mode designed to give drivers year-round assurance with the ability to handle rough weather and low-traction conditions. This active four-wheel-drive system is recommended for daily use, including slick conditions that come with rain and light snow.

Freedom Drive I also features a lockable center coupling, giving drivers the ability to put the Jeep Compass in four-wheel-drive lock mode to handle deep snow, sand and other low-traction surfaces.

The Jeep Freedom Drive II Off-Road Package is an available four-wheel-drive system that delivers Jeep Trail Rated capability in Compass form. The Freedom Drive II Off-Road Package includes a second-generation continuously variable transaxle with low range (CVT2L) that engages when the off-road mode is activated, 17-inch all-terrain tires and aluminum wheels, a one-inch raised ride height, a full-size spare tire, skid plates, tow hooks, fog lamps and manual seat height adjuster.

The available Freedom Drive II Off-Road Package is recommended for moderate off-road situations that include steep grades, occasional wheel lift and rock or log climbing.

The 2013 Jeep Compass’ powertrain is designed to deliver world-class performance in all weather conditions, fuel economy and refinement, all at an affordable, value-packed price.

Compass features a standard 2.0-liter World Gas Engine for the 2013 Jeep Compass Sport and Latitude models that provides 158 horsepower (117 kW) and 141 lb.-ft. (191 N•m) of torque coupled with the continuously-variable transmission (CVT2), and delivers excellent 23 mpg in the city, and 30 mpg on the highway when mated to the five-speed manual transmission.

The proven 2.4-liter I-4 World Engine produces 172 horsepower (129 kW) and 165 lb.-ft. (224 N•m) and is available on all models and standard on the Limited. This 2.4-liter World Engine has dual variable-valve timing (VVT) on both intake and exhaust camshafts, which helps optimize the torque curve at all speeds and produces more power, better fuel economy and smoother, quieter operation than engines without dual VVT. Dual VVT is a technology typically not available on vehicles sold in the United States in the Jeep Compass’ price class. The Jeep Compass’ 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a five-speed manual transaxle in front-wheel drive configuration delivers 23 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway.

Jeep Compass also features a standard five-speed manual transaxle on the entry-level Compass Sport model and a CVT that is available on the Compass Sport model and standard on the Latitude and Limited models. The Compass’ CVT2 is a second-generation CVT that Chrysler Group engineers calibrated for a pleasing engine response and precise ratio control. CVT2 contributes to a fuel economy improvement of 6 to 8 percent compared with a traditional four-speed automatic. The Compass CVT2 also improves vehicle performance compared with a traditional automatic transaxle because of optimized gear ratios, especially in the 30–60 mph range during passing maneuvers.

The 2013 Jeep Compass also provides up to 2,000 pounds of towing capacity.

AUDI AG: Sales in Europe up by 4.2 percent in October

AUDI AG: Sales in Europe up by 4.2 percent in October

AUDI AG
AUDI AG

AUDI AG started the fourth quarter of the year with another double-digit increase in sales: Thanks in particular to the SUV models Q3, Q5 and Q7, together with the A5 model family, worldwide sales in October were up 13.9 percent year on year, to around 123,600 automobiles.

– Around 123,600 deliveries worldwide in October (+13.9 percent)
– Sales chief de Meo: “Record sales in China for the whole of 2011 already surpassed in October”
– Updated Audi Q5 strengthening business in Europe

This means some 1,221,150 customers have already purchased a new Audi since January, a rise of 12.9 percent compared with 2011.

In October, the Ingolstadt-based carmaker bucked again the market trend in Europe by achieving 4.2 percent growth. Audi’s deliveries continued to grow by well into double figures in the U.S. (+14.5%) and in China, where it gained 29.5 percent last month.

China remains one of the major growth drivers for Audi: We already surpassed the record total for the whole of last year during this October, and 2012 will see us set a very good new record,” says Luca de Meo, Member of the Board of Management of AUDI AG for Sales and Marketing.

He added: “Our market share in the Chinese premium segment has further increased since January – also thanks to new models that particularly meet the increasing demand of Chinese customers for individuality and sportiness.”

With the recent introductions of the compact SUV Q3, the A4 allroad quattro and the RS 5 Coupé, Audi has successfully opened up new segments for the brand in China.

Across all models, deliveries by the premium manufacturer increased by 31.2 percent since January to 332,959 units; this compares with a total of 313,036 cars for the whole of 2011. The 29.5 percent growth to 35,899 deliveries in October was spearheaded mainly by the Changchun-built models Audi A6 L and Q5.

October saw Audi also achieve clear increase in many other growth markets in the Asia-Pacific region: In South Korea, for example, sales compared with the same month of 2011 were up 62.5 percent; in India, the Q3 launched there in June contributed towards a 76.3 percent rise in sales.

With sales of 11,708 units and a gain of 14.5 percent in the United States, Audi of America enjoyed its 22nd successive record-breaking month in October. The A4 was one of the key drivers of growth there: Demand for the best-selling model in Audi’s U.S. portfolio climbed 20.6 percent to 3,151 cars. Sales of the full-size models A6, A7 Sportback, Q7 and A8 also grew at a double-digit rate, and received an extra lift from the market introduction of the S6, S7 Sportback and S8 model versions in September.

The especially sporty S versions of the Audi models traditionally enjoy particularly strong demand among the brand’s U.S. customers. S versions of the Audi TT, A4 and A5 have been on the US market for longer, and nearly one in four customers of the respective model family showed a preference for such a sporty version in recent months.

Strong growth in Canada (+37.6%) and throughout the whole of South America (+55.8%) in October confirmed the dynamic performance of Audi throughout all the Americas. In Brazil alone, where the A1 Sportback has been winning over new customers to the four rings since September, the brand improved on the prior-year month’s deliveries by 82.2 percent with sales of 645 cars.

In Europe, Audi again kept up the growth pattern of recent months in October despite the distinctly negative market environment: Around 60,950 cars – a gain of 4.2 percent – were delivered to customers in the Ingolstadt carmaker’s largest sales region. The recently launched new generation of the Audi Q5 further strengthened sales in Europe.

I also recommend this article  Honda NSX Concept - the first image

In the German market, also the Q3 and the A5 model family contributed particularly to a 5.1 percent increase in sales, to 23,450 units. Over the first ten months, the premium manufacturer thus delivered 222,227 automobiles to customers in Germany. This cumulative growth of 7.2 percent compared with the same period of 2011 means that in Germany, too, demand for Audi models developed notably stronger than the market as a whole. In the UK, October brought Audi UK a 19.8 percent rise in deliveries to 9,109 cars; in addition to the Q3 and A5, it made significant progress in the full-size segments.

While Audi, too, experienced a further decline in sales totals in the past month in Italy (-14.1% to 3,903 cars) and Spain (-11.8% to 2,561 cars), sales in such markets as Belgium (+16.6% to 2,993 cars) and Turkey (+13.1% to 1,000 cars) increased substantially.

The highest growth rate for Audi among the biggest European markets was once again reported by Russia, where sales in October put on 57.1 percent to reach 2,946 deliveries.

Russia therefore continues to lead the strong performance for Audi in the whole of the Eastern Europe region, where the company increased its deliveries from January through October by 31.5 percent to some 48,650 units, putting it on course to exceed sales of 50,000 for the first time ever by the end of this year.

2013 Audi R8, Audi R8 V8 Coupé

2013 Audi R8, Audi R8 V8 Coupé

Audi R8 V8 Coupé
Audi R8 V8 Coupé

Audi is making its R8 high-performance sports car sharper and more attractive than ever.

The S tronic makes its debut in the model series, which is now topped by the new R8 V10 plus.

The all-LED front headlights and the new dynamic turn signals in the back are standard with all models; distinctive design details set accents.

The R8 V8 Coupé weighs just 1,560 kilograms (3,439.21 lb) thanks to the Audi ultra lightweight construction principle.

The Audi R8 is a sports car with great every day utility.

The long wheelbase of 2.65 meters (8.69 ft) offers a generous amount of space for the driver and passenger. Another strength of the R8 is the luggage capacity – 100 liters (3.53 cu ft) fit under the front hood and another 90 liters (3.18 cu ft) behind the seats of the Coupé, which can also accommodate two golf bags.

The interior of the R8 conveys a luxury-level racing atmosphere. Its most distinguishing feature is the monoposto. The large arc encircles the driver’s area of the cockpit. It starts in the door and ends at the center tunnel.

The optional R8 leather-covered, multifunctional sport steering wheel with the rim flattened at the bottom sports the new R8 logo with the red rhombus. The logo is also found on the door sills, the shift lever (with the S tronic), in the instrument cluster and on the start screen of the on-board monitor.

Power-adjustable sports seats are available as an option for V8 models and are standard with V10 variants. Heated seats are standard in all models except the R8 V8 Coupé, where they are available as an option.

Depending on the model variant, the seats are covered in a combination of Alcantara and leather or in Fine Nappa leather. In the R8 Spyder, a special pigmentation prevents the seats from heating up excessively in the sun. Audi offers bucket seats with folding seat backs as an option for the Coupé (standard in the R8 V10 plus).

I also recommend this article  Volkswagen is launching the new Golf 7

The controls are clearly structured. The standard driver information system displays the speed digitally and offers a lap timer for recording lap times. The instruments and the shift lever in the V10 models bear red rings to underscore their sportiness.

The shift paddles of the S tronic have been enlarged for easier operation and like the entry sills are in aluminum look. The pedals in ten-cylinder models also shine in aluminum look.

The R8 is the sporty spearhead of the Audi model lineup.

Now the high-performance sports car is more dynamic than ever, with the S tronic transmission and new features on the exterior, in the cabin and for the brakes.

All models now come standard with all-LED headlights. The rear lights mark the premiere of another dynamic innovation: dynamic turn signals. The powerful new R8 V10 plus with 404 kW (550 hp) sprints from zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 3.5 seconds. Thanks to Audi ultra lightweight construction, the top-of-the-line model with a manual transmission has a curb weight of just 1,570 kilograms (3,461.26 lb).

The reshuffled R8 lineup comprises two body styles – Coupé and Spyder – and three engines. The standard sprint times for both models equipped with the new seven-speed S tronic have improved by 0.3 seconds while fuel consumption has been reduced by as much as 0.9 liters per 100 km (22 grams CO2 per km [35.41 g/mile]).

All versions of the R8 feature an axle load distribution of roughly 43:57 – ideal for a mid-engine sports car. Dry sump lubrication enables the engines to be mounted low, giving the vehicle a very low center of gravity. All of the wheels are mounted on aluminum double wishbones.

The setup is tuned for high dynamics, yet delivers good comfort. The adaptive damping system Audi magnetic ride (standard in the R8 V10) adapts the response of the shock absorbers to the requirements of the driver and the road.

The chassis of the Audi R8 V10 is decidedly tuned for dynamics. A special configuration including modified spring/damper tuning with a corresponding adjustment of the camber values at the front axle provides for even more dynamic handling.

I also recommend this article  Mercedes-Benz TV: Torie at the Concept GLA premiere in Shanghai

The alloy wheels, which measure 18 or 19 inches in diameter depending on the engine, come in a variety of new designs. The brakes are incredibly powerful. All four discs are internally vented and perforated, and their wave design reduces the weight. Audi also offers optional carbon fiber-ceramic discs that are even lighter, yet extremely durable and long-lasting. These are standard with the R8 V10 plus.

The Audi R8 V10 offers superior performance.

When equipped with the standard S tronic, the Coupé accelerates from zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 3.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 314 km/h (195.11 mph).

With the optional manual transmission, these figures are 3.9 seconds and 316 km/h (196.35 mph). The R8 V10 Spyder completes the standard sprint in 3.8 seconds; top speed is 311 km/h (193.25 mph). The figures for the manual transmission are 4.1 seconds and 313 km/h (194.49 mph). The R8 V10 Coupé with S tronic consumes on average 13.1 liters of fuel per 100 km (17.96 US mpg).

Zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 3.5 seconds: the new Audi R8 V10 plus
The output of the new top model R8 V10 plus is 404 kW (550 hp) thanks to modified engine management; torque reaches 540 Nm (398.28 lb-ft) at 6,500 rpm.

Available only as a Coupé, the R8 V10 plus in combination with the S tronic accelerates from zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 3.5 seconds and flies past the 200 km/h (124.27 mph) mark just 7.8 seconds later. Average fuel consumption is 12.9 liters of fuel per 100 km (18.23 mph), corresponding to CO2 emissions of 299 g/km (481.19 g/mile). The figures with the manual transmission are 3.8 seconds, 319 km/h (198.22 mph) and 14.9 liters (15.79 US mpg).

Fastest street legal car record video – “Pandalloy Powered” Worlds Fastest Street Car @ 283mph – PPR Standing Mile Guinness World Record

Fastest street legal car record video

A heavily tuned Ford GT has hit 283.232mph over a standing mile in the USA, taking the Guinness World Record in the process

Johnny Bohmer Owner of Performance Power Racing and Driver of the World Famous BADD GT, along with Matt Lundy, Lead Design Tech, piloted the 1700+ horse power Ford GT down NASA##Q##s Shuttle Landing Facility Runway this week setting a new Guinness World Record at 283.232 mph in the Standing Mile.

The Standing Mile is an event in which a vehicle, from a dead stop, accelerates completely through the one mile mark.

A company in the USA has built a 1700bhp Ford GT, and smashed the World Land Speed Record for a street legal car – hitting 283.232mph over a standing mile at NASA’s Shuttle landing facility in Florida.

Performance Power Racing, a research and development company in Palm Beach, used a new high-strengh Aluminium alloy, called ‘Pandalloy’ during the build to lower weight.

The Pandalloy™ Aluminum Alloys Project through Performance Power Materials, Inc is very exciting. The multiple series of Aluminums are vastly outperforming what is on the market today and we are excited to see how far we can push the limits of performance, and more importantly efficiency to have a positive impact worldwide. We break records to prove that these systems and designs really do function and can be implemented on vehicles of all types.” said Johnny Bohmer.

Performance Power Racing is a West Palm Beach based Research and Development Company working directly with Pratt & Whitney on a new high specific strength, high temperature tolerant, Aluminum Alloy branded Pandalloy™.

Performance Power has successfully transitioned and implemented Aerospace Technology in to the Automotive World. Parts were specifically designed and manufactured out of Pandalloy™ Aluminum Alloys for the World Record Setting Ford GT. Performance Power successfully proved that Aerospace Technology can be effectively used to lower emissions, increase fuel economy, and lower a vehicles carbon footprint through their performance testing at NASA##Q##s Kennedy Space Center Shuttle Landing Facility.

Our entire team has worked very hard to get here and we are proud to be able to put an American car in the record books as the fastest street car in the world.” Mr. Bohmer said about the achievement.

By NASA allowing us access to a one of a kind facility, we are given the opportunity to explore these technologies and share their benefits. An immense amount of research and development went in to this 3 year project and we are just scratching the surface of where these systems can be utilized outside of the racing arena.

The record attempt was observed and validated by Guinness.
