The Giulietta gets a green upgrade with the new TCT gearbox
It’s amazing the coincidences that you can notice in history.
In the 1950s Alfa Romeo brought out a gorgeous little coupe called the Giulietta to bring an Italian interpretation to the VW Karmann Ghia.
Basically they gave it more power from the little 1.3l engine than VW could get from any of its engines, even the 1.6l from the Karmann Ghia TC of the late 60s.
They developed an entire list of variants on this lovely little model including a Spider, a Sprint Speciale, a Berlina sedan and even a Zagato rebodied Sprint. The Sprint Speciale and the Zagato Sprint both managing to squeeze an impressive 116bhp from the little engine.
Fast forward to today and the dual-clutch DSG gearboxes from the VW group in cars like the Scirocco are bringing fuel and emissions savings to their range and Alfa and the Fiat group have responded with their own dual-clutch system in the Giulietta TCT.
They have given this new six speeder to the 1.4l Multiair petrol and 2l MultiJet Diesel engines and it does seem to be as smooth and effective as promised, bringing a nice smooth gearbox that gives fast and very slick gear changes.
It is a testament to Alfa’s approach to the gearbox that in the Daily Telegraph, The Independent and What Car, they all note the quality of this new gearbox.
It also brings two additional financial benefits, a 10% fuel saving, pushing it to over 54mpg for the petrol and nearly 63mpg for the diesel, and perhaps even better, a drop of 2 company car brackets because the petrol now puts out only 121g/km and the diesel only 119g/km.
The Alfa “D.N.A. selector” that gives you the choice of Dynamic, Normal and All-weather modes now talks directly with the gearbox so that the chassis and drivetrain are working in unison.
Whichever model you choose, you get 170bhp under your right foot with the diesel outdoing its petrol sibling with 340Nm of torque (250ft/lb) compared to 250Nm (180ft/lb).
Both of the models will take you all the way to 135mph but (perhaps surprisingly because of the difference in torque) the petrol engine will get you there a little quicker, 7.7seconds to 62mph rather than 7.9.
The interior quality definitely seems to have improved and it looks like a fantastic place to sit and drive.
The rev counter and the speedo are the most prominent dials but everything else looks clear and is a little bit more unique than the ubiquitousness of the VW/Audi/Skoda/Seat parts bin.
The outside of the car is the same and somehow just what you expect from Alfa Romeo, with a splash of style and the few tweaks that make it as good looking as the rest of the recent range of Alfas.
Overall, the TCT gearbox has added a strong new feature to an already lovely car. Alfa Romeo has combined achievable improvements in the economy, emissions and performance to what was already the most stylish car in the sector, with an increase in interior quality to German levels.
This means that while an Alfa is always a compelling choice for the heart, your head won’t disagree for a moment.

The best deals are generally found only on vehicles that are about a generation or two older than the current generation of the vehicle. In most cases, this doesn’t prove to be a major deterrent, but if the vehicle has seen major developments within the said time span, it does not make much sense to buy the older car.

Chrysler 300 and Jeep ® Grand Cherokee Win AutoPacific ‘2012 Best in Class Vehicle Satisfaction’ Awards
Chrysler Group LLC announced today that the automotive research group AutoPacific has named Chrysler 300 as “Best in Class Vehicle Satisfaction” for the “Large Car” category, and Jeep® Grand Cherokee, for the second year in a row, won the “Premium Mid-Size SUV” category.

On the 11th March 2012, the Peugeot 508 won “Car of the Year 2012” in Algeria, a prize presented by the Algerian Motoring Journalists##Q## Association (CJAA), at a ceremony held in a large hotel in Algers.
The panel of judges, composed of 19 professional journalists, had to judge the new models available on the Algerian market during 2011 based on various criteria (style, quality, price, consumption, dynamic handling, comfort, safety etc.).
The 508 won the award, beating the Ford Focus, the Citroën C4, the KIA Sportage and the Nissan Micra. Launched in Algeria in May 2011, the 508 quickly won over the Algerian public, and in just a few months rose to 2nd place in the M2 segment.
After winning the titles of “Car of the Year 2012” in Spain and Portugal, this new accolade confirms the renowned qualities of Peugeot##Q##s large saloon. It is worth remembering that the Algerian car market has been experiencing strong growth since last year (301,400 vehicles sold in 2011, up 32% on 2010).
At a press-conference today to unveil the first 408 models for the Russian market, company executives from Peugeot answered journalists’ questions on specific features and benefits of the new model that arrives on the Russian market.
The new Peugeot 408 goes on sale with a starting price of 549,000 rubles.
The Peugeot 408 is a thoroughly modern car with an expressive appearance in line with the latest stylistic codes from the Marque that combine elegance and high tech features.
Trim levels available for the 408 Saloon are Access, Active and Allure which enable customers to choose the set of options optimally corresponding to their expectations and needs.

Mini has reworked the 1.6-litre turbocharged engine in the JCW range. It##Q##s now considerably more efficient – without sacrificing any power
Mini’s latest John Cooper Works engine is a direct development of the previous 1.6-litre turbocharged engine, and while retaining identical power and torque figures, fuel economy has been significantly improved by making various improvements to the engine.
Thanks to a number of changes to the engine, power and torque remains at a healthy 208bhp (215bhp for the Countryman) and 192lb ft, while average fuel consumption has been improved from 39.8mpg to a claimed 42.8mpg along with reduced CO2 emissions, which have been cut from 165g/km to 153g/km.
Various technological advances have been made over the previous engine, including a version of BMW’s Valvetronic system, direct injection and specifically for JCW cars, reinforced pistons, a high-strength cylinder head and sodium-filled (lightweight) exhaust valves.
This coincides with the introduction of a new six-speed automatic transmission, which is now available on all the different JCWs. Fitting the automatic ‘box (with steptronic function) adds an extra 0.2 seconds to 62mph, and adds and extra 12g/km onto the CO2 emissions.
All Mini JCWs are now equipped with ‘Minimalism’ – Mini’s new fuel-saving tech – as standard. This includes stop-start, a regenerative braking system, a new electric steering set-up and a gearshift indicator – source Evo.

The Jeep® brand has received a Silver OBIE award from the Outdoor Advertising Association for America for the Jeep Wrangler Call of Duty® Out of Home Creative Design.

The OBIE was awarded for the Jeep brand’s creative use of billboard advertisement using blacklit electroluminescent billboards featuring day and night imagery.

“Our creative standards are high and allow great ideas to come to life, always striving to showcase our products with a unique approach.”
The Jeep billboard campaign was designed by creative agency Global Hue. Using patented low voltage electroluminescent Light Tape ® lamps, consumers saw the campaign tagline, “Toughest Vehicle in the World” version of the advertisement by day that showcased the true vehicle capability and a “Toughest Vehicles in the World”. Any World.” version at night, illustrating the vehicle’s capability in the virtual Call of Duty world.
The billboards were located in Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago, and were the three largest completely backlit electroluminescent billboards done simultaneously.
“This was a breakthrough creative idea that not only communicated the Jeep brand and its Wrangler Call of Duty: MW3 Special Edition SUV, but also allowed us to connect to the gaming world and expose the 2012 Jeep Wrangler to a completely new set of consumers,” said Mike Manley, President and CEO – Jeep Brand.
“The billboards showcased the rugged capability, dynamic energy and high performance that the 2012 Jeep Wrangler Call of Duty: MW3 Special Edition SUV offers.”

Chrysler Group LLC Launches ##Q##No Payments for 90 Days##Q## Program
Chrysler Group LLC today announced a “No Payments for 90 Days” promotion on the retail purchase of all new 2012 Chrysler, Jeep®, Dodge, Ram Truck, and FIAT brand models financed through Ally Financial or Chase Auto Finance.
This deferred retail payment program is effective today and will continue through May 31, 2012.
Qualified consumers can take advantage of the “No Payments for 90 Days” deferral program on retail contracts for up to 60 months. These programs may not be available to consumers in Washington, D.C., Pennsylvania or Maine. For more details, consumers should check with their local Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Ram Truck, and FIAT dealerships.
Separately, Chrysler Group has expanded its support for the U.S. military by adding a $500 “Military Appreciation Bonus Consumer Cash” allowance to the retail purchase or lease of a new, eligible Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Ram Truck, or FIAT brand vehicle through May 31, 2012.
The “Military Appreciation Bonus Consumer Cash” is on top of the $500 military bonus cash that the Chrysler Group already offers to eligible members of the military and their families.
Eligible consumers include active military, active military reserve, retired military (honorable discharge required), and retired military reserve (honorable discharge required). All honorably discharged veterans are eligible regardless of discharge date.
This limited-time offer is available on 2012 Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Ram Truck, and FIAT brand vehicles, excluding the 2012 Dodge Avenger SE, Chrysler 200 LX sedan, Dodge Journey AVP, Fiat 500 Abarth, all SRT models, and the Viper.
All eligible personnel must present their military I.D., discharge papers (DD214 form), or other documentation that clearly reflects their eligibility status, to a franchised Chrysler dealer in the United States at the time of retail purchase of an eligible vehicle.
Additional information about this special promotion may be obtained from any participating Chrysler Group dealer.
On May 15, 2012, Chrysler Group LLC notified the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration that the company will voluntarily recall approximately 67,872 model-year 2010 Jeep Wranglers in the U.S. to replace the vehicle’s automatic transmission skid plate with a skid bar.
For the 2010 model year, the catalytic converter was relocated for emissions compliance. The new location is closer to a skid plate, a condition that could permit debris accumulation, particularly when driving off-road or through heavy brush.
If debris is not cleared from the underbody, as the owner’s guide instructs, it could pose a fire risk because of its proximity to the catalytic converter.
Chrysler Group will replace the skid plate on 2010 Jeep Wranglers with a skid bar, a design change implemented in late 2010 and in subsequent model years as a weight-savings measure.
Chrysler Group is unaware of any injuries associated with these incidents.
The recall encompasses only those 2010 model-year vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions and built prior to July 14, 2010. Affected owners will be contacted by Chrysler Group.

To start with, the 1.4 Turbo T-Jet 16v engine is boosted to 180 HP and teamed with the electrically operated Abarth Competizione manual gearbox with steering wheel controls, which enhances the performance of the engine with reduced gearshift times as well as offering an experience of superior comfort behind the wheel.
To improve performance, in particular for acceleration, the car is fitted with performance tyres on 17″ alloy wheels featuring a special Maserati-inspired “Neptune” design. The ride and braking system have also been strengthened to cope with the extra power: Brembo 305 mm disc brakes with grey fixed four-piston callipers and special Koni shock absorbers guarantee performance in complete safety.
The Abarth 695 Maserati Edition wouldn’t be complete without the variable back-pressure “dual mode” exhaust, designed to improve engine performance and deliver an inspiring sound above 3,000 rpm, with tailpipes that have been modified to assume the hexagonal shape that has always been a hallmark of Maserati cars.
The car’s exterior features a body painted in Pontevecchio Bordeaux. This colour from Maserati is achieved with special three-layer paintwork that reflects light and accentuates the shine of the colour. The same paintwork is also found on the door-mounted mirrors. The electrically controlled soft top is made of grey fabric.
The new Abarth adopts Xenon headlamps with dipped and driving light functions for improved light emission and excellent performance in all weather conditions. These devices deliver three times the light intensity and duration of standard halogen headlamps.
The customisation is just as complete on the inside. The interiors demonstrate both the attention to detail and the sportiness that characterise the two brands, starting with seats upholstered entirely in sand beige leather, with strips featuring single-layer padding, sporty but elegant and comfortable at the same time, and stylish details such as the number “695” heat-printed on the head restraints. The dashboard and gearbox trim are distinguished by a special matte-finish carbon lining, further enhancedwith the 695 logo, while the door panels and rear panels undergo a special UV-LUX treatment, which lends the trims an elegant grey “flocking” effect.
The black leather steering wheel is characterised by beige leather inserts and tricolour hub and houses the wheel-mounted gearbox controls, while the instrument panel has been specifically produced by the Jaeger brand.
Other details enrich the interior, such as the aluminium pedal unit and sill plate, the carbon fibre kick plate with customised “Abarth 695 Maserati Edition” graphics and the plate with the car’s series number from 1 to 499.
Lastly, as proof of its touring vocation and to enhance the on-board experience, the Abarth 695 Maserati Edition comes as standard with a boosted JBL hi-fi audio system with nine speakers and an eight-channel amplifier supplying 400 W of total power.

Audi is exhibiting concept vehicles for lifestyle, action and sport on the Wörthersee Tour. Three powerful versions provide new accents in the Q3 model family, and with its e-bike Wörthersee prototype Audi defines a technical bike concept that explores the limits of technical feasibility on the basis of Audi’s core competences “design”, “ultra”, “connect” and “e-tron”.
This grand meeting of Audi, VW, Seat and Skoda fans is being held for the 31st time from May 16 to 19 in Reifnitz, on the Wörthersee in Carinthia, Austria.
– Three Audi Q3 themed cars – Audi e-bike Wörthersee: high-end sports equipment for stunts – 16 production Audi models on 3,500 square meters of stand area
A center of focus for Audi at this year’s Wörthersee Tour are the three Q3-based themed cars: the new Audi Q3 red track, the Audi Q3 jinlong yufeng or ‘Golden Dragon in the Wind’ and the Audi RS Q3 concept. All three add new but quite different aspects to the character of this compact SUV: leisure-oriented, sturdy, dynamic. They are powered by five-cylinder TFSI engines developing between 228 kW (310 hp) and 265 kW (360 hp).
The Audi Q3 red track will appeal to winter-sport enthusiasts. On its roof it carries two pairs of Audi skis made from carbon fiber-reinforced polymer. Stored in the load area are two hand lamps with radiant heating elements and a thermos flask, all supplied inductively with electric power. Heatable seat cushions are integrated into the reversible load-area mat.
This concept car has an Energy Red paint finish that has been given additional luster by golden pearl-effect particles. Add-on body elements are finished in matt grey quartz paint; some of these items will soon be appearing in the Audi accessories program. In the Singleframe radiator grille the aluminum struts are vertical and red panels partially blank off the air inlets. The high-gloss package accentuates the window areas. Two compact LED headlights are installed in the roof rack and back up the beams from the xenon headlights after dark. The tailpipes of the dual-branch exhaust system are integrated into the rear diffuser. Inside the headlights the zones in the lower part of the daytime running light strips are painted in the body color.
Inside the Audi Q3 red track the dominant colors are black, grey and red. The seats are upholstered in an innovative combination of leather and cloth: Narrow strips of leather only a few tenths of a millimeter in width are woven together with the yarn. Smaller segments of the upholstery are made from Velvet leather, a strong material that is given a fascinating appearance and feel by a special treatment process. The large inlays make use of a three-dimensional stainless steel mesh.
The Audi Q3 red track features a powerful engine: the turbocharged five-cylinder TFSI with a displacement of 2.5 liters, a power output of 250 kW (340 hp) and a maximum torque of 450 Nm (331.90 lb-ft). With this power and torque, the Q3 red track accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds and reaches a top speed of 263 km/h (163.42 mph). A 7-speed S tronic transmission and quattro permanent all-wheel drive deliver the power to all four road wheels. The 20-inch wheels are fitted with size 255/45 offroad tires. Compared with the standard Q3 model the front and rear tracks are both 40 mm (1.57 in) wider and the ground clearance has been increased by 30 mm (1.18 in).
Only a few weeks ago the Audi Q3 jinlong yufeng (Golden Dragon in the Wind) and the Audi RS Q3 concept made their debut at the Auto China exhibition in Peking. The Audi Q3 jinlong yufeng, with a brilliant Liuli Yellow paint finish and yellow interior decor, conjures up a close link with windsurfing. Its 2.5 TFSI engine has an output of 228 kW (310 hp).
Even more power is available in the RS Q3 concept: Its 2.5 TFSI engine develops 265 kW (360 hp) – top performance for maximum dynamism. The body, with its flared wheel arches and blue paint finish, has been lowered by 25 mm (0.98 in). The add-on body elements are made from carbon fiber-reinforced polymer, with either a black or a blue lacquered finish. The individual honeycombs in the Singleframe grille are slightly offset. Inside the car, a cool black finish has been adopted. The seats have sport seat cushions and backs with the integral head restraints that are normally reserved for the S sport seats.
One of the highlights on the Audi stand is the bicycle technology concept known as the Audi e-bike Wörthersee – a sport bike that does not fit into any of the usual categories. It is neither a pedelec nor a conventional bike, but is best described as a high-end pedelec made by Audi for sport, fun and tricks. The Audi e-bike Wörthersee combines the Audi brand’s principal competences – design, ultra, connect and e-tron – and explores the limits of what is technically feasible in terms of design, lightweight construction, networking and electric mobility.
This show bike is futuristic at the very first glance – a bike for tomorrow and beyond. All its components, even the pedals, have been shaped by Audi’s designers, for instance the 26-inch wheels made from CFRP that weigh only 600 grams (1.32 lb) each and have innovative large-area blade-pattern spokes.
The Audi e-bike Wörthersee’s ultra-light carbon-fiber frame weighs only 1,600 grams (3.53 lb). It makes use of bionic principles derived from nature. Material reinforcements are needed only at the points where loads actually occur. The swinging arm for the rear wheel is also made of CFRP. All in all, the Audi e-bike Wörthersee represents the full extent of the brand’s expertise in ultra-lightweight design.
The rear wheel is driven by a chain. The electric motor is a permanent magnet synchronous machine; it is located at the lowest point on the frame and drives the bottom bracket shaft directly. Maximum torque at the rear wheel is in the region of 250 Nm (184.39 lb-ft). Peak output from the electric motor is 2.3 kW – a new top value on the e-bike scene. The complete bicycle weighs only 21 kg (46.30 lb), equivalent to a power-weight ratio of 9 kg (19.84 lb) per kilowatt, or 7 kg (15.43 lb) per horsepower – another record-breaking value.
The lithium-ion battery is housed in the frame; it weighs about 5 kg (11.02 lb) and operates at a voltage of 48 V. Its capacity is 530 Wh and it can be fully recharged from a 230 V supply in two and a half hours. As an alternative it can be easily detached from the bike and replaced by a recharged battery.
The rider of the Audi e-bike Wörthersee can choose between five programs; these either support use of the pedals or permit electric-only travel.
In the ‘Pure’ mode the rider only propels the bike by means of the pedals. In the ‘Pedelec’ mode the rider is assisted by the electric motor; a top speed of up to 80 km/h (50 mph) can be reached and the action radius is between 50 and 70 kilometers (31 and 44 miles). In the ‘eGrip’ program the Audi e-bike Wörthersee can be ridden with the electric motor providing all the necessary power; in this case at speeds up to 50 km/h (31 mph). The rider controls the power output from the electric motor at a twistgrip and can configure it at the on-board computer.
In ‘Wheelie’ mode the power flow is electronically controlled in order to assist the rider when the front wheel is in the air. Alternative operating modes are available, and can be selected by smartphone or directly at the e-bike: either ‘Power Wheelie’ with an adjustable wheelie angle for less skilled riders, or ‘Balanced Wheelie’ for those with more experience. In the latter mode the rider’s balance is maintained electronically: as his or her weight is displaced forward or back, this is counteracted by either braking or accelerating the electric motor.
In this way the rider can influence the speed when riding on the rear wheel only by shifting his or her weight. Leaning forward speeds up the bike, leaning back slows it down. If the rider wants to use the pedals and maintain a constant power input, the training mode can be chosen. The electric motor then makes good the extra power needed when riding into the wind or up a hill, so that the rider’s performance can be kept constant for training purposes.
The Audi e-bike Wörthersee has a varied specification. The nine-speed hydraulically actuated gear shift has a very rapid sequential action, similar to the R tronic transmission in an Audi R8. The two disk brakes are also applied hydraulically. Seat height can be continuously adjusted at a handlebar control, even while the bike is being ridden. The front fork uses the more complex ‘upside-down’ principle; it is air-sprung, with 130 mm (5.12 in) of travel. LEDs are used for powerful lighting: the front light is integrated into the handlebar, the rear light into the seat.
The on-board computer is located in the frame top tube and operated using a touchscreen. Among the functions it provides are riding mode selection, recording trick sequences and adjustment of various e-bike functions such as electric pedaling assistance and lighting. The display shows road speed, distance covered, state of battery charge, energy consumption and slope angle at any given moment.
The rider’s smartphone communicates by WLAN with the bike’s computer. The antenna is integrated into the front brake line. To ride the bike, the immobilizer is deactivated at the smartphone; the bike is then ready for use. In addition, by way of the interface between the bike’s computer and the smartphone, video images recorded while riding or even complete trick sequences can be transmitted to the Internet or the trainer. Every trick performed successfully qualifies for success points. As the number of points increases, the rider is rewarded and at the same time the challenge level rises. The total Internet ranking can be compared with friends or other riders. The rider can locate them by way of Facebook entries that can be shown on the Audi e-bike Wörthersee’s display.

More car manufacturers getting in step with higher pedestrian safety standards
In the latest set of Euro NCAP results, the BMW 3 Series, Hyundai i30, Mazda CX-5 and Peugeot 208 have received Euro NCAP’s maximum five star rating.
All four vehicles show that car makers are rising to Euro NCAP’s challenging 2012 5 star requirements, especially in the area of pedestrian protection where the thresholds have been significantly increased this year.
The BMW 3 Series in particular achieved a commendable 78% in pedestrian protection, a good result for a compact executive car with no active bonnet. The Peugeot 208 scored 61% for pedestrian protection, only just clearing the 2012 5 star threshold of 60%.
The Mazda CX-5 scored 64% and the Hyundai i30 67%. In both side impact tests – the side barrier and the pole test – the Mazda CX-5 scored maximum points, the only car of the latest release to do so.
By contrast, the i30 showed weak protection of the chest in the side pole test, although its score for child occupant protection was the highest in this round of tests.
The Mazda CX-5 achieved five stars and, together with the BMW 3 Series, offers an Autonomous Emergency Braking System (AEBs). Such systems act independently of the driver to stop the car, or to reduce its speed, if a collision is imminent. Dr Michiel van Ratingen, Secretary General of Euro NCAP says ‘If all cars were fitted with AEB systems, many crashes could be mitigated or avoided altogether on European roads.
The Mazda CX-5, which has AEB fitted largely as standard equipment in Europe, is therefore a good example for other manufacturers to follow as Euro NCAP intends to assess AEB in future testing procedures.’
At its 15th anniversary on 13 June, Euro NCAP will reveal and demonstrate the next phase of its safety programme looking to the future of technologies such as AEB to drive even more safety assistance for European consumers.
Furthermore, Audi has received the coveted Euro NCAP Advanced reward for its ‘Pre Sense front plus’ technology, the second such reward given to the German car maker. The Audi pre sense front plus technology is available on the Audi A6, which achieved 5 stars in 2011.
With two long range radars positioned at the front of the car, Audi pre sense front plus is designed to help avoid or mitigate accidents into the rear of cars ahead.
The system, available as an option throughout the European Union, can detect vehicles ahead which the car is likely to hit unless action is taken by the driver.
Through Euro NCAP advanced, the organization continues to raise consumers’ awareness on systems which offer a significant safety benefit.

The overall brand campaign was designed to introduce the 2012 Wrangler Call of Duty®: MW3 Special Edition SUV and included broadcast, print, digital, social media, experiential events and out-of-home advertising. The OBIE was awarded for the Jeep brand’s creative use of billboard advertisement using blacklit electroluminescent billboards featuring day and night imagery.

Carroll Shelby, legendary car builder and racing champion, dies at age 89
Carroll Shelby, an international automotive icon who rose from a bed-ridden childhood in Texas to build one of the most iconic sports cars ever and become a world-champion racer died Thursday at the age of 89 after a lengthy illness.
His cars will live forever.
A winner at Le Mans in 1959, a driver in everything from Formula 1 to the Bonneville Salt Flats, Shelby##Q##s lasting impact will be the cars he built, namely the Shelby Cobra 427 that beat Ferrari in Europe and his variations of the Ford Mustang that he was involved with from the 1960s through his death.
Throughout his career, Shelby battled and overcame his physical limitations, from racing crashes to a congenital heart defect that required several surgeries and eventually a heart transplant in 1990.
Born Jan. 11, 1923, in Leesburg, Texas, Shelby was the son of a rural mail carrier. After being confined to bed for much of his first several years, his heart grew strong enough for Shelby to take an interest in cars. During World War II, Shelby served as a flying instructor, and wrote letters to his fiancée by putting them in flying boots he##Q##d drop on her farm.
Married with children after the war, Shelby began a racing career that quickly rose to international acclaim. After rushing to the track for his early races wearing the same bib overalls he wore at his chicken farm, the look became his trademark.
Sports Illustrated named him driver of the year in 1956, and Shelby won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1959 — driving some races with a nitroglycerin tablet under his tongue.
Shelby##Q##s high-performance cars helped Detroit challenge the dominance of the Europeans in racing. Ralph Gilles, head of product design for Chrysler, said Shelby created cars that helped enthusiasts worldwide find “joy and self-actualisation”.
“My name is Carroll Shelby and performance is my business,” Shelby said in an early commercial for the Cobra.
He was born in Leesburg, Texas, in 1923. He started racing cars in the 1950s, and in 1959 he won the 24 Hours of Le Mans, a marathon race held in France.
He was diagnosed with a serious heart condition in 1959 that forced him to quit racing. Shelby had a heart transplant in 1990 and a kidney transplant in 1996.
He drove one race with nitroglycerin pills under his tongue to prevent against a heart attack. He complained that he would have won if not for the pills.
He soon turned his attention toward designing. He approached Lee Iacocca, who was then at Ford, about building a lightweight AC roadster with a Ford engine. That car became the Cobra, a name that Shelby said came to him in a dream.
In 1962, the Cobra was introduced at the New York Auto Show and Shelby##Q##s company began making the cars in California later that year. In 1964, Ford asked Shelby to develop a high-performance Mustang. That same year the song Hey Little Cobra by the Rip Chords embedded the sports car in pop culture.
“Whether helping Ford dominate the 1960s racing scene or building some of the most famous Mustangs, his enthusiasm and passion for great automobiles over six decades has truly inspired everyone who worked with him,” said Edsel Ford II, grandson of the company##Q##s founder Henry Ford.
He parted ways with Ford in the 1970s and headed to Chrysler, where he revamped the K car and worked on the initial design of the Dodge Viper. He also worked for General Motors##Q## Oldsmobile division.
Shelby sued Ford in the 1990s over the use of the Cobra name. That suit was settled and by 2001, he was collaborating with the company again.

Ferrari has announced a small recall affecting its V8-engined models
The problem relates to a finishing process on the crankshaft, which has been applied by an incorrectly calibrated machine.
The can cause unusual vibrations, which could eventually lead to engine seizure. Ferrari says there haven’t been any reported failures, and this is a precautionary move after the mistake was identified.
The recall affects Californias and 458 Italias built in the last three and a half years, with 206 cars worldwide needing attention. From a production run passing 13,000 that equates to around 1.5 per cent.
In the UK, ten Californias and six 458s are affected. Each owner will receive a letter from Ferrari informing them of recall action.
Chrysler Group LLC will conduct a voluntary safety recall of approximately 129 U.S.-market 2012 Ram 1500 pickup trucks to reconcile mismatched spare-tire information placards.
Quality inspections performed at Chrysler Group’s production facility discovered a small number of vehicles may have been equipped with spare tires that do not correspond with information-placard specifications, as required by Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.
The vehicles subject to recall were produced Jan. 5-6, 2012.
Chrysler Group LLC is not aware of any related accidents or injuries.
GM has announced its next generation of supermini, and it will be called the Vauxhall Adam.
Previously codenamed Junior, Vauxhall##Q##s latest small car will sit alongside the Corsa in the model range, aiming to take a slice of the Mini and Fiat 500##Q##s more style-conscious market share.
An official release from Vauxhall claims that the Adam will feature ##Q##muscular and sporty##Q## looks, and the images of a highly disguised Adam gives some clue to how the finished car will look when it##Q##s unveiled at the Paris motor show in October. (via Evo.co.uk).

In addition to the 4007, but also the 3008 and its recent HYbrid4 version, the 4008 fulfils the expectations of the different markets showing strong growth in the compact SUV segment.
Born of the PSA – Mitsubishi partnership, the 4008 naturally has a strong Peugeot identity.
The new stylistic codes of the marque are judiciously adapted, such as the floating grille and the feline design of the lamp units with visual signature: at the front, a line of LED daylight running lamps that complement the headlamps and three red claws sculpted rear lamps.
The off-road character has been emphasised by adopting a vertical design of grille, inclusion of body sill protectors and prominent wheel arch protection trims, to accommodate large wheels enhanced by the sophisticated design of the wheel rims.
The almost-horizontal bonnet grooves and the style line – which extends to the rear wing where it descends again crossing the lamp – are a distinctive feature and appear to hollow out along the body side, accentuating the strong and dynamic aspect of the 4008.
The work carried out by the design style team, down to the smallest detail, gives the 4008 a high class elegance in line with its positioning.
The exterior is, among other things, set off with chromed components and the interior ambiance is enhanced by the choice of materials, like the soft texture fascia, to the instrument panel visor and the lacquered black decoration of the centre console.
A glass panoramic roof provides extensive light for the occupants in the passenger compartment and is supplemented with side LEDs for night/dark light illumination for reading.
With its particular style, strong and distinctive, the 4008 is firmly rooted in the world of the compact SUV. The platform of the 4008, taken in part from the 4007, has been reduced in length by shorter front and rear overhangs (-30cm in length). In the four-wheel drive version, the driver can select three transmission modes: “2WD” two-wheel drive, “4WD” four-wheel drive and “LOCK” locking of the four-wheel drive.
In the two four-wheel drive modes – 4WD and LOCK – the distribution of the torque between the front and the rear is managed electronically. In LOCK mode, the four-wheel drive transmission becomes permanent, with even greater distribution of torque to the rear wheels.
This type of transmission will represent more than 80% of sales of the 4008. Peugeot##Q##s new 4×4 SUV will in fact only be offered in a 4×4 version in certain countries, including Europe.

Recall Statement: Fuse (2011-2012 Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300) – Chrysler Group LLC will conduct a voluntary safety recall of approximately 119,072 U.S.-market 2011 and 2012 Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 sedans.
“Despite a small number of incidents, we concluded it was in the best interest of our customers to repair the vehicles and eliminate the potential for this condition to occur,” said David Dillon, Head of Product Investigations and Campaigns, Chrysler Group LLC.
A plastic insert surrounding a fuse may be subject to distortion caused by thermal expansion and contraction. Such distortion could interrupt power to the ABS/ESC control system and temporarily suspend its function.
If the condition occurs, the ABS/ESC warning lamp will illuminate. However, basic brake function is still fully available.
Recalled vehicles, built prior to December 20, 2011, will be fitted a new fuse which also will be relocated.
Dodge Back in Victory Lane at Talladega – Keselowski Takes Dodge to Victory Lane at Talladega
Brad Keselowski picked up his second win of the season Sunday, scoring a victory at one of the toughest venues on the Sprint Cup Series schedule – Talladega Superspeedway.
It’s the second time Keselowski has won at the 2.66-mile track; he collected his first career victory in 2009 before joining Penske Racing and Team Dodge.

Although the race had a couple “big ones” as expected with the close competition, Keselowski kept the No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge clean throughout the race which was extended beyond the scheduled 188-lap distance for a green-white-checkered finish after a nine-car mishap with just two laps remaining.
For the restart, the “Blue Deuce” lined up beside leader Matt Kenseth who had held the point a race-high 73 laps. Providing the push for the No. 2 was Kyle Busch.
Keselowski had a plan, something he had thought about trying if he were ever in such a position at Talladega. Traditionally, the car running second on the final lap has had the advantage. Not this time, not with the Keselowski Talladega Plan.
“I had this whole plan if I ever got in that situation,” he said. “I knew the move I wanted to pull. It worked because the guy running second (Busch) should have the advantage, but I had this move all worked out in my mind. I went into Turn 3 high and pulled down off of Kyle; that broke the tandem up.
That allowed me to get away from him and drive untouched to the checkered flag. It wasn’t easy to convince myself to do that, but it was the right move. I’m glad it worked.”
Crew chief Paul Wolfe says it was a case of playing it smart throughout the race. “The win, it’s definitely exciting for everyone on this Miller Lite Dodge team,” said Wolfe. “We typically haven’t had a lot of luck here at these plate races, but we played a smart race all day. Brad did a great job. He knew what he needed to do there at the end and he was able to do it. It was a great team effort.”
The win moves Keselowski to 12th in the point standings, but more important, he’s one of only three drivers with two wins this season. The other two are Tony Stewart and Denny Hamlin. It puts the driver of the No. 2 Dodge in a strong position for one of the two Wild Card berths in the Chase if he’s not in the top 10 after the first 26 races that set the Chase field.

It was the first Sprint Cup win for Penske Racing at Talladega. “We’ve been coming here since 1972, so it’s a long time to get a race win,” said team owner Roger Penske. “It was certainly special. Overall the car ran well.
The Dodge engine showed its power as Brad came off of (turn) four there, which amazed me. Our fuel economy was good. We didn’t run out of fuel and stayed out of trouble. You never know what’s going to happen with a green-white-checkered finish at Daytona or Talladega. We were very fortunate and Brad did a terrific job.”
Teammate A.J. Allmendinger was equally impressive and was running sixth when he was involved in the nine-car mishap that brought out the fifth caution and extended the race.
He ran as high as second and raced in tandem with Keselowski on several occasions.

Global Automakers to Demo EV Fast Charging at EVS26
Global automakers from the United States and Germany will demonstrate fast-charging technology that will enable the recharging of most electrified vehicles with compatible systems in as little as 15-20 minutes.
Audi, BMW, Chrysler, Daimler, Ford, General Motors, Porsche and Volkswagen have agreed to support a harmonized single-port fast charging approach – called DC-fast charging with a Combined Charging System – for use on electric vehicles in Europe and the United States.
Live charging demonstrations will be conducted during the Electric Vehicle Symposium 26 (EVS26) May 6-9.
The combined charging system integrates one-phase AC-charging, fast three-phase AC-charging, DC-charging at home and ultra-fast DC-charging at public stations into one vehicle inlet.
This will allow customers to charge at most existing charging stations regardless of power source and may speed more affordable adoption of a standardized infrastructure.
The International Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) has chosen the Combined Charging System as the fast-charging methodology for a standard that incrementally extends the existing Type 1-based AC-charging. The standard is to be officially published this summer. ACEA, the European association of vehicle manufacturers has also selected the Combined Charging System as its AC/DC-charging interface for all new vehicle types in Europe beginning in 2017.
The charging system design was based on the collaborative review and analysis of existing charging strategies, the ergonomics of the connector and preferences of U.S. and European customers.
The Combined Charging System was developed for all international vehicle markets and creates a uniform standard with identical electrical systems, charge controllers, package dimensions and safety mechanisms.
The system maximizes capability for integration with future smart grid developments through common broadband communication methods regardless of the global location of the charging system.
The combined charging approach will reduce development and infrastructure complexity, improve charging reliability, reduce the total cost-of-ownership for end customers and provide low maintenance costs.
Commercially available combined charging stations are projected to be available later this year. All committed OEMs have vehicles in development which will use the Combined Charging System.

General Motors showed the company’s vision of the Chevrolet EN-V 2.0 concept at Auto China 2012 today.
It is an evolved design of the company’s revolutionary mobility concept revealed at World Expo 2010 Shanghai.
“Our designers and engineers are exploring a range of options for turning the EN-V concept into a reality,” said Kevin Wale, president and managing director of the GM China Group. “The EN-V 2.0 concept would use technologies such as the mobility Internet, electrification and telematics to help change the automotive landscape and ensure a sustainable future for our industry,”
The original EN-V (Electric Networked-Vehicle) concept was a centerpiece of the SAIC-GM Pavilion at World Expo 2010 Shanghai.
The two-seat electric vehicle pioneered a new automobile DNA based on the convergence of electrification and connectivity. It was developed to show the possibilities for alleviating concerns surrounding traffic congestion, parking availability, air quality and affordability for tomorrow’s cities.

Springtime is here, which means the hammers and shovels for do-it-yourself home improvement projects are coming out.
And from Terrain to Sierra HD, every GMC is capable of carrying the load – big or small – for a variety of home renovation projects.
Home improvement is an ever-growing industry with an expected retail sales increase of nearly 4 percent in 2012 to $269 billion, according to the Home Improvement Research Institute.
“I’ve been a contractor forever so I wouldn’t even consider a vehicle that can’t fit plywood and other materials” said Eric Stromer, host of HGTV’s “Over Your Head,” do-it-yourself expert on “GMC Trade Secrets” and a GMC Sierra Hybrid driver. “The crew cab is good for my kids, I can tow cement mixers and other equipment, and with it being a hybrid, it offers that capability with a lower carbon footprint.”
With Sierra 1500 half-ton, 2500HD ¾-ton, and 3500HD 1-ton pickups, GMC offers a variety of cab layouts, bed lengths, engines, transmissions, and axle ratios.
Payload capacity is as much as 6,635 pounds and with the Duramax diesel’s 765 lb-ft of torque, trailers weighing up to 23,000 pounds can be towed. According to the National Association of the Remodeling Industry, home addition projects that require heavy lumber, bulky insulation, and other materials are on the rise.
For the Acadia midsize crossover, which had its best sales year ever in 2011 and will be significantly updated for 2013, do-it-yourself projects were part of the development process from the beginning.
At the core of the cargo area’s development was the ability to accommodate a 4-foot-wide sheet of drywall or plywood.
The second- and third-row seats fold forward to create a practical cargo space with a flat load floor for easy loading. Healthy lifting movements were also considered when the load height was set at an average waist level. Inside, there’s no deep well in the floor that would require excessive bending.
“I’m at the home improvement store all the time and I still haven’t come across anything that won’t fit in my Acadia,” said Sue Eckel, vehicle chief engineer. “I’ve slid the SmartSlide seats forward to fit small trees without tipping them over, and I’ve slid the second row rearward to put heavy pots securely on the floor. SmartSlide is all about that configurability.”
SmartSlide is an industry-exclusive feature in GM crossovers including Acadia that allows one-handed adjustment of and access to the second- and third-row seats. According to Eckel, “you can even slide the second row back enough to recline the front passenger seat fully to carry a ladder.”
The Terrain small SUV, which gets a more powerful V-6 and an upscale Denali model for 2013, offers similar versatility. Its Multiflex rear seats can be moved fore and aft nearly eight inches (200 mm) or folded flat in a 60/40 configuration to free up 63.9 cubic feet (2820 liters) of cargo space.
For Yukon and Yukon XL SUVs, the capability includes a third row of seats that’s fully removable and a second row that tumbles forward with a single hand or push of a button with the available power fold-and-tumble second row seating.
An available power lift gate provides easy access to Yukon XL##Q##s segment-leading cargo volume of 137.4 cubic feet (3891 liters). The Yukon XL 3/4 ton, with its 6.0L Vortec V-8, can tow a trailer as heavy as 9,600 pounds. And like Eric Stromer’s Sierra, the fuel-efficient Yukon Two-Mode Hybrid is ideal for remodelers looking to lessen environmental impact through all phases of a project. It offers an EPA-estimated 20 mpg in city driving and 23 on the highway.

Chevrolet Delivers Record First Quarter Global Sales – Brand’s global growth has outpaced automotive industry since 2009
Chevrolet sold 1.18 million vehicles worldwide in the first three months of 2012, a 6.5 percent increase over the first quarter of 2011, marking the sixth consecutive quarter of record-breaking sales for the brand.
In the last two calendar years, Chevrolet has grown faster than other high-volume global brands, bringing its global market share to 6.3 percent.
“The strongest lineup of cars, trucks and crossovers in Chevrolet’s history delivered record-breaking sales in 2011 and equally impressive results in the first quarter of 2012,” said General Motors Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson.
“To keep our momentum going, GM has more than 20 major vehicle launches in 2012, and some of the most important are Chevrolets, including the Sail in Asia, the Colorado in South America and the Spark in North America.”
The Chevrolet Cruze led the brand with global sales of more than 180,000 in the first quarter, a nearly 20-percent increase over 2011, making it the best-selling Chevrolet nameplate around the world.
Sales of the recently launched 2012 Aveo/Sonic small car and 2013 Malibu mid-size sedan are increasing as more vehicles become available in dealer showrooms.
Chevrolet posted significant sales increases over the same period last year in four of its top five markets including:
■ In the United States Chevrolet sold 448,000 vehicles in the quarter, an increase of 7.6 percent. Passenger car sales remain strong with increasing demand for fuel-efficient vehicles like the Cruze, Malibu and Sonic.
■ In China, Chevrolet sold a record 162,000 units in the quarter, an increase of 1.4 percent.
■ In Brazil, Chevrolet remains competitive even though sales were down 4.2 percent for the first quarter to 137,000 units.
■ In Mexico, Chevrolet sold 42,000 vehicles in the quarter, an increase of 14.2 percent.
■ In Argentina, Chevrolet sold 41,500 vehicles in the quarter, an increase of 21.5 percent setting a record for the brand.
ChevroletEurope sold 55,104 vehicles in Western and Central Europe, a 7.8 percent increase in an industry that was down 8.7 percent versus last year.
Chevrolet Europe achieved its best-ever first quarter market share of 1.36 percent, up from 1.15 percent in the first quarter of 2011. In addition to the gains made on the continent, Chevrolet Europe sold 2,812 vehicles in Israel in the first three months of 2012.
Other major Chevrolet launches include the Trailblazer mid-size SUV in Thailand and Cruze station wagon in Europe.
Chevrolet, traditionally an American brand, today records more than 60 percent of its sales outside the U.S. market.

2013 XTS production marks new stage in brand’s global growth – Cadillac Expands in China
Cadillac announced at this week’s Beijing Auto Show that it will build the all-new XTS luxury sedan in China in conjunction with joint venture partner Shanghai General Motors (SGM).
The production expansion for the Chinese market is a major landmark in the brand’s global growth.
The new 2013 Cadillac XTS launches in North America later this spring with production beginning in the coming weeks at the Oshawa, Ontario Assembly Plant.
XTS production will begin in China this fall. The XTS is a new approach to the luxury sedan, blending traditional Cadillac spaciousness with advanced technologies, some of which are industry and segment firsts.
“China is the second-largest market for Cadillac, and of course is one of the largest and strongest markets in the world for luxury cars, so it is a core part of our vision as a brand,” said Don Butler, Cadillac vice president of marketing.
“It is projected that by the end of the decade half of all luxury purchases in the world – all categories, not just cars – will occur in China.”
Cadillac’s expansion in China in 2012 is the result of impressive growth for the brand. Since its small-scale debut in China in 2005, Cadillac has steadily earned a solid position. Cadillac sold a record 30,000 vehicles in China in 2011, compared with 17,000 in 2010.
XTS is not the first Cadillac assembled in China. That distinction belongs to the SLS Executive Sedan, an extended-length luxury car exclusive to China that began production in 2006. However, the expansion of XTS production to China marks the biggest step in Cadillac’s growth in the world’s largest automotive market.
All of the brand’s core product lines are sold in China, with the CTS Sedan and Coupe, SRX crossover and Escalade imported from North America. The SRX is Cadillac’s top seller in China. In March Cadillac sales set a monthly record of 2,745, an increase of 35.2% over the same period in 2011.
The average age of a Cadillac buyer in China is 35, signifying the explosive growth of the luxury marketplace and consumer perceptions of Cadillac.
“We’re very encouraged by the positive response Chinese luxury consumers have to Cadillac,” said Butler. “Qualities like innovation and entrepreneurship are admired by many luxury consumers in China, which aligns well with Cadillac. The American spirit of Cadillac creates a distinct and compelling position in the luxury marketplace.”
Cadillac’s dealer network has grown to 68 locations with projected growth to 120 dealers by the end of 2012. “Our dealers in China are experiencing strong growth, with some of them quickly becoming among the largest and best we have in the world,” said Butler.
