Maintenance Should Be Your Top Priority While Using Tow Bars

Maintenance Should Be Your Top Priority While Using Tow Bars
A tow bar is simple equipment that is used to attach two vehicles together so that one can pull another.
It usually consists of two wheels, a tongue and an axle. A tow bar allows an individual to tow any vehicle with a front wheel drive system and does not add any miles to your vehicle.
You can easily do this by installing a base plate or bracket on the front of your vehicle.
You also have to use a brake light wiring kit to synchronize the brake lights of both vehicles. This is an easy process and you can do it on your own.
Once you have done this, you are ready to tow your car without adjusting the front of your vehicle.
Tow bars add weight to a vehicle. They are heavy and affect suspension and mileage of the car. As a result, proper care and maintenance should be your primary concerns while and after installing tow bars on a vehicle.
It is important to remember that there are different types of tow bars in the market. Tow bars with brakes are usually better than others. However, it is important to be updated about any laws, rules or regulations associated with installation of tow bars in your area.
Some Point Which Help with Maintenance of Tow Bars
1) A tow bar is simply attached between a coach and a car so that one can be towed by another. This is a very easy one man operation. Tow bars are small in size and therefore, they can be easily installed.
According to your needs and requirements, you can choose a motor home mounted tow bar or a car mounted tow bar.
You will need to install a base plate on the front of the towed vehicle. This helps in reducing ground clearance which is very important. Therefore, it is important to buy a tow bar according to your needs and requirements.
2) Front wheel drive vehicles with a manual transmission can be easily towed without any modifications.
Moreover, such vehicles can be towed with all four tyres grounded. You do not need to lift the car which can cause some damage at times. It is also important to consult your Car Company or dealer to get an idea about different types of tow bars suitable for your car. You should also ask them about the speed limit for a towed car in your area.
3) Towing a car is an easy process. However, you will need to make sure that you use brakes and lighting equipment in order to meet safety standards. You should check the wiring kit before installing a tow bar on your vehicle. Companies like witter towbars suggest that you should buy high quality tow bars which are strong as well as light in weight.
4) In order to ensure your safety and also the safety of other people travelling on the road, you should make sure that all safety standards are met by you.
You should remember to go through your installation kit and use everything as mentioned or suggested by professionals.
It is also important to buy the right kind of equipment according to your car. There are different types of tow bars available in the market like a Ford tow bar, Honda tow bar etc. You should buy the one which is suitable for your car.

Ram Trucks
The Ram Truck brand continues to establish its own identity and clearly define its customer. The brand has emerged as a full-size truck leader by investing substantially in new products, infusing them with great looks, refined interiors, durable engines and features that further enhance their capabilities.
Truck customers – from half-ton to commercial – have a demanding range of needs and require their vehicles to provide high levels of capability. The Ram 1500, 2500, 3500 pickups: 3500, 4500 and 5500 Chassis Cabs and Ram Cargo Van are designed to deliver a total package.

The 2013 Ram Heavy Duty brings best-in-class capability and innovative new features to the heavy-duty segment with an uncompromising attitude that remains the standard for all full-size heavy-duty pickups. Ram Heavy Duty also delivers the performance and amenities customers demand, for example the most off-road capable pickup on the market – the award-winning Ram Power Wagon. Ram also offers the only factory-engineered CNG truck. The Ram 2500 CNG is bi-fuel, capable of operating on compressed natural gas or gasoline.
“What surprised the athletes about both the Wrangler and Ram wasn##Q##t off-road capability, which they have come to expect from both brands. It was vast improvements to the interior fit and finish as well as on-road ride-and-handling, which sent these vehicles to the front of the pack,” said Nina Russin, automotive journalist and ALV program founder.
“From a consumer stance, the fact that both the Wrangler and Ram 1500 4X4 can fill so many squares, functioning equally well commuting to and from work, running errands and taking the kids to soccer practice, adds a tremendous amount of value at any price.”
In the final tally, the athletes’ votes and those of the journalist jury panel each accounted for 50 percent. Their evaluations took into consideration overall vehicle design, fuel efficiency, engine power and cargo capability.
ALV is the only car-of-the-year program in the United States that combines the input of automotive journalists with elite and area athletes to determine which cars and trucks best meet the needs of buyers with active lifestyles.

Continental Tyres

Continental Tyres
The “golden autumn” may have been a long time coming, but the temperatures are dropping quickly. Some drivers have already had to scrape ice off their windshields.
This can only mean one thing: The winter tire season is fast approaching – whether you go by the climate (1st rule of thumb: when temperatures drop below seven degrees) or the season (2nd rule of thumb: “From October to Easter”).
Either way, Germany##Q##s car drivers should make appointments to have their winter tires fitted. If you put it off too long, you can expect to have a long wait for an appointment and for some of the more in-demand winter tire models.
Smart drivers are making appointments already now.
If you are fitting winter tires yourself, make sure that the remaining tread depth is at least four millimeters.
“Below this limit, the performance typically offered by winter tires deteriorates considerably,” warns Dr. Andreas Topp, Head of Winter Tire Development at Continental. “Don##Q##t cut corners in the wrong places when it comes to your tires. Precisely when visibility is poor or the roads are covered in snow or ice, every meter of braking distance counts.”
If you need to buy new winter tires, take a look at the results of tests conducted by the trade press, automobile clubs, and consumer protection organizations. Here, the winter tires from market leader Continental, for example, either came out on top or were highly recommended.
However, consumers should exercise a little more skepticism when it comes to no-name winter tires available from your local DIY store or manufactured in China.
Very often, these fail to fulfill even the most basic safety requirements. Consumers should also not allow themselves to get confused by the EU tire label, which will be required on every new tire from the start of next month.
While it provides information about braking distances on wet roads, rolling resistance, and external noise, it does not cover winter properties.
Consumers should therefore continue to look for the snowflake symbol, which appears only on true winter tires.

Renault and Skoda, two approaches to beat the financial crisis

Renault and Skoda, two approaches to beat the financial crisis
These are difficult times for the world of automobiles, as we all know.
Toyota are shutting down factories in China while Peugeot flounder and lose hundreds of millions a month.
And yet in the midst of the darkness, there are a few strongly driven companies – at least in Europe – which seem to be doing well in spite of it all.
Among the companies that have best handled the financial crisis are French manufacturers Renault, and Skoda Auto from the Czech Republic.
What is interesting is that they have adopted very different strategies to handle the common challenge. There is much to learn from their two approaches, and it is worth taking a moment to compare and contrast them.
Skoda have based much of their success on their reputation for developing a functional family car, as exemplified by the enduring popularity of the Skoda Octavia.
This is not to say that they have not released other products as well – but the number of models designed by a manufacturer cannot be read as a clear indicator of their economic well-being, as companies like Fiat have been struggling to compete even as they released several new cars.
The point is that for all of their other novelties such as the Yeti, the Fabia and the Scout, Skoda have never diminished their efforts on the established frame of the Octavia.
Proof of this is the fact that yet another iteration of this family car is bound to be released in 2013. Though no more than a few photographs are available (and even then, they capture a camouflaged model), hype is already building up. Skoda have handled the crisis by going for the power of familiarity and popularity – which is, paradoxically, the exceptional power of normality.
On the other hand, Renault have adopted the opposite approach. They have emphasized new technologies, and in particular alternative power-sources.
They currently boast the best sales for electric cars in Europe, and the symbol of their innovation is the Renault Twizy – the single best-selling electric model in the continent. This statement must be qualified by keeping in mind that these figures are relative. The total sales do not even reach 15,000, which is impressive for an electric vehicle, but still a fraction of what the new car by Skoda can be expected to achieve. Still, it’s remarkable to see such a market for electric cars when you consider that they are not even supported by an adequate infrastructure (especially in terms of recharging them).
Again, this is not to say that electric cars are the only models being released by Renault. Far from it. But it is a sign of what kind of niche market Renault are trying to cut out for themselves – and succeeding at it, too.
This is arguably the crucial difference between these two competitors. Both have been relatively successful in handling the economic storm, but Skoda did so by emphasising the most popular and familiar type of car. Renault, on the other hand, went for the stranger and more futuristic prototype. Since both are sound strategies, it is comforting to see that both are being rewarded.

New Mercedes GLG and other ‘mini SUVs’

New Mercedes GLG and other ‘mini SUVs’
![]() |
New Mercedes GLG |
‘Honey, I shrunk the kids!’ could be Mercedes’ slogan for the rumoured new GLG. Alongside the inflated Mini Countryman and the practical Skoda Yeti, another mini SUV is set to hit the market.
Never mind road monsters like the Mercedes G Class or some of Landrover’s beefiest models. These mini SUVs seem to be designed for those who hunt wild animals in narrow city parking spaces. But all prejudices (and pretentions) aside – what is their appeal?
Marketed as ‘family cars’, miniature SUVs are now available for a range of budgets. The Mini Countryman starts at £15,380 (- £21,365); a Skoda Yeti is available from £14,135 (- £23,260).
They are also far more efficient with their fuel than standard SUVs. In essence, they are a reasonably affordable fashion statement, which combines space and practicality with visual appeal – sounds like a good alternative to a no-nonsense family Volkswagen estate!
Skoda Yeti
The Yeti is without doubt Skoda’s best SUV to date. According to insurance statistics it is also one of Britain’s most popular SUVs.
It certainly is a more than valid rival for the Nissan Qashqai, which did extraordinarily well in terms of new registrations in 2010 and 2011 insurance statistics.
Interior quality is what may be expected from Volkswagen Group cars – efficient, practical, predictable, but also durable.
A maximum boot space of 1760 litres allows plenty of space for luggage and family pets, and the Varioflex back seats are flip-able to transport even the least flat-packed furniture.
Road tax on the 1.2 TDI petrol engine releases only 149g CO2/km, making the Yeti very affordable in terms of road tax. With a combined fuel consumption of about 44mpg, petrol won’t add up to cost too much more than for a Golf estate.
Mini Countryman
First of all – this isn’t ‘mini’.
The new Minis are fun to drive, funky to look at, and fine design copies of the original. The Countryman is…BIG – oxymoron, much? Its origin and design are bound to split opinions, however it is the first Mini which can be seen as a valid family car.
Like the Skoda Yeti, the Mini Countryman may look like a shrunken SUV, however neither of them is a 4×4. Both are powered by a front-wheel-drive, and able to venture into off-road terrain a little due to their raised suspensions.
The Countryman ‘ALL4’ additional package operates a more sophisticated system of splitting drive between front and rear wheels when the in-built traction control detects that the vehicle has lost grip.
The Countryman is available as either four- or five-seater, and has a boot capacity of 350 litres – significantly smaller than the Yeti, however also significantly bigger than ‘mini’.
Truly ‘mini’ however are both CO2 emissions and petrol use – the Mini Countryman runs on a combined 40mpg on petrol, and 60mpg on diesel.
Slotting neatly into this trend, the new Mercedes GLG, if and when it appears on the market, will certainly sell – until trend moves on and away from this odd land of shrunken giants.

Speedy Family Vans

Speedy Family Vans
Having a large family or a huge amount of sports gear no longer has to mean driving bulky cars, slowly.
I does not necesserily mean driving an SUV, either. There may be some exciting and affordable 4x4s out there, however SUVs are by far not the only ones who boast driving comfort through all wheel drive.
Here are some suggestions – these two tuned versions of the Volkswagen T5 van do room as well as speed – and a lot of it.
The Volkswagen T5 is the manufacturer’s fifth generation of the medium-sized, light commercial vehicle, boasting four-wheel drive and a high maximum load. The T5’s shuttle version seats seven to nine people, and, generally, looks like any ordinary van.
However: Two German tuning teams have taken it upon themselves to turn the T5 into something any ‘man with a van’ would dream of.
The Sportec T5 R version of this trusty classic has upped both performance and appearance to something rather more impressive.
The 2.0 litre TSI engine in Sportec’s tuned T5 is the same as that which powers the Volkswagen GTI, the Skoda RS, and the Seat Cupra. The T5’s performance has been upped from 147 bhp to 295 bhp (128 kW), with a maximum torque of 470 Nm (at 2000 RPM). Thanks to the seven-speed manual gear system, Sportec’s T5 R accelerates from 0 to mph in approximately 8.9 seconds.
That is a lot of speed for just some van.
Maximum load for the Sportec T5 is 583 kg – which means all the luggage and sports gear in the world can be taken along on holiday.
Currently available only in red, Sportec’s T5 version also boasts sportkat, a racing-design exhaust (producing the appropriate sound for this van!), and sports-design tyres.
Rothe’s T5 version on the other hand doesn’t bother with changing the T5’s looks, and is simply all about speed. Driver and passengers are seated 30 mm closer to the road, which gives this van improved sticking power around tight corners; the four wheel drive guarantees excellent control.
The K04 turbo engine manages an impressive 301 bhp (225kW), and accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 7.1 seconds. Rothe’s T5 comes with wither a manual or automatic gear system.
Maximum load for the Rothe T5 is 629 kg.
Both tuning packages are surprisingly affordable, starting at around £800 on top of the price of the basic T5, available new from around £16,000. When looking to buy new cars appropriate to large families doing off road holidays, it may therefore be well worth looking further than, well, cars.

Moving Heaven and Earth’ Power Behind Technologies in 2013 Ram 1500

![]() |
2013 Ram 1500 |
A new national advertising campaign, titled “Moving Heaven and Earth,” demonstrates how state-of-the-art technologies like a powerful 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine, class-exclusive eight-speed transmission, all-new air suspension system, revolutionary rotary shifter and next-generation Uconnect Access, give the new Ram 1500 the power to move heaven and earth and put the environment under the complete control of the driver.
The ads feature the Ram Truck brand tagline “Guts. Glory. Ram.”
The first television spots are scheduled to begin Oct. 12.
Fuel-saving technologies offered in the Ram 1500 pickup, providing the new truck with best-in-class fuel economy of 18 mpg city and 25 mpg highway, also will take center stage in another campaign running in key U.S. Hispanic markets.
This next iteration of the brand’s “A Todo, Con Todo” campaign (meaning “to everything, with everything”) was produced in both Spanish and English and features the award-winning Latin musician Juanes.
“The Ram Truck brand has generated 29 months of consecutive sales growth and increased market share by offering the most capable trucks for every professional and lifestyle need,” said Fred Diaz, President and CEO – Ram Truck Brand and Chrysler de Mexico.
“The new Ram 1500 is more than a truck, it is the embodiment of no-compromise, industry-first innovations engineered to move heaven and earth, and it is built by a team of determined men and women destined to do the same to bring the most capable light-duty truck to market.”
A 60-second commercial, titled “Road,” establishes the concept of the national Ram 1500 campaign and sets the stage for four additional 30-second ads that follow.
“Set against nature’s most inspiring landscapes, this campaign blends realism and surrealism to tell the story of how the entire Ram team moved ‘heaven and earth’ to build the new light-duty truck,” said Olivier Francois, Chief Marketing Officer, Chrysler Group LLC.
“These powerful and epic ads visually celebrate the innovative technologies and pioneering capabilities of the new Ram and the investment we put into bringing this new truck to market.”
‘Road’
The 60-second spot opens on a one-lane highway with the new Ram 1500 traveling underneath a starlit sky. The constellations appear to move as the driver changes SiriusXM satellite radio stations.
The truck continues on its journey as a series of special effects are mixed with real footage to dramatically demonstrate the class-leading capabilities and features of the new light-duty truck. For example, two major cities come together to shorten the distances (better fuel economy) and a hawk suddenly freezes in mid-flight and shifts course (total control of rotary shifter).
Actor Sam Elliott, the voice of Ram, says “To take it all head-on … shorten the distances, push beyond the possible, roar past convention, shift every course, defy the elements and bring the world to its knees. The new 2013 Ram 1500. Engineered to move heaven and earth.”
Just as the truck comes to a stop at the edge of a rocky cliff, Elliott steps out, marking his first on-camera appearance in a Ram commercial. Elliott continues, “The road doesn’t end here. This is only the beginning. Guts. Glory. Ram.”
– ‘Moving Heaven and Earth’ campaign showcases state-of-the-art features only offered in the new Ram truck
– ‘Guts. Glory. Ram.’ tagline and Sam Elliott, voice of Ram, to continue
– Ram Truck brand introduces new bilingual Hispanic campaign, evolving ‘A Todo, Con Todo’ theme and featuring award-winning Latin musician Juanes .
The 30-second commercials include:
– “Horizon” – Best-in-class 25 mpg highway fuel economy provides for 160 more miles with every fill-up, shortening more distances than ever before to a single tank of gas.
– “Dawn” – The revolutionary rotary shifter in the new 2013 Ram 1500, the first of its kind to be introduced in any pickup truck, puts the driver in absolute control of thier surroundings and the road.
– “Mountain” – Class-excusive Active Level air suspension in the new Ram 1500 is designed to take on any obstacle in its path, leveling the steepest inclines, conquering the rockiest roads and easing the burden of even the toughest terrain.
– “Sky” – The state-of-art Uconnect Access, featuring SiriusXM radio, has the power to put the universe and the satellites directly within the driver’s reach in the new 2013 Ram 1500.
Ram will have a large television presence in professional and college football games, major league baseball playoff games, network and cable primetime programming, and syndicated network and cable sports and outdoor lifestyle programs beginning the weekend of Oct.13.

Use protection covers
Plenty of auto covers are available online. Seek out a good cover that minimizes damage from sun, wind and debris and rain elements.
If you##Q##re in a cold, harsh environment, make sure to cover the classic car and garage the vehicle for ultimate protection.
Research transport companies
Run the engine
Monitor the parts
You can even remove the battery, clean it with a baking soda solution, and then top it up with distilled water. Make sure to cover the car with a soft cotton flannel cloth. Hopefully, these tips will help in transporting and maintaining the value of your classic or antique car.

Seven Accessories You Must Keep in Your Vehicle at All Times

![]() |
Seven Accessories You Must Keep in Your Vehicle at All Times |
Emergencies happen all the time, especially when you are driving somewhere.
From major road accidents by other drivers that can keep one stuck in traffic for hours to tire damage and engine failures in one’s own car, it##Q##s always best to be prepared.
When something like this happens to you, it can be disastrous especially if you are not well equipped to handle the arising emergency.
Here are seven accessories that you must have in your car at all times to deal with emergency situations.
1. Vehicle registration and insurance information
Most of us assume that insurance information, our driving license and vehicle registration documentation are basically carried around just in case we get pulled over however this is not the only reason. Road accidents sometimes occur.
They may be caused by you, the other driver or a force of nature and when metals meet, it never ends well. You will need to exchange your insurance information when it occurs and you need registration to prove that you and your car and its plates belong together. Always keep these documents close by – the registration and insurance license in the glove compartment and your driving license in the wallet or purse.
2. Food and water
You don’t carry food and water in your car only when you are going on a road trip. These are two essentials that you need in your car, it doesn’t need to be a fancy 5 course meal, but the bare minimum you need to stay alive in case you break down somewhere you cannot buy a meal.
You can even get stuck in a storm between home and work and for the endless hours you will have nowhere to go, you could starve. Pack compact healthy foods full of energy with long shelve lives and a few bottles of water in your car particularly when you are driving for quite a distance.
3. Basic first aid kit
You do not need to have an ornate of surgical arsenal in your trunk especially today when emergency services are sophisticated, but you still need a first aid kit with all the essentials to help in case of an accident until help arrives. The first aid kit should have:
- Pain relievers
- Bandages
- Burn cream
- Scissors
- Antiseptic wipes
- Other necessary medical equipment
- Small fire extinguisher
- Home and office numbers for your family members, friends or neighbors
4. GPS and map
Driving a long distance? Even if your car has an inbuilt GPS and digital map, it is a good idea to have a portable GPS or at least a compass and a map. If the car’s GPS fails or the charge on your smartphone drains out, you can rely on the paper map and GPS to find your way if you get lost.
With a paper map, the biggest problem you could face is folding it, which is insignificant compared to getting lost. Aside from that, always have a car phone charger with you to keep your phone battery full when you are away from home.
5. Booster cables
Booster cables, at times called jumper cables, are more important than most of us realize. Ever parked your car during winter and in the morning it cannot start?
Well, if you have booster cables, someone can help you start it up. Read your car manual to know what cables you need and practice how to use them safely. A jumpstart is not always a solution to all startup problems but it can get you started where you would otherwise be stuck.
6. Tire gauge and flat tire fixer
Several new cars do not come with a spare tire to save on weight and expenses, especially those meant to run within cities.
If your car relies on run-flats or a sealant in a can, make sure that you have it in the car at all times. However, if your car needs a tire change when there is a flat, make sure that the spare is always in good running condition. Have a tire gauge in your car and take the readings on all the tires at least once a week.
7. Flashlight
Last, but equally important is a flashlight. If you have a camera phone, chances are that you might assume the light on the phone will come in handy but it is better to have a battery powered or rechargeable flashlight for those night situations when your phone battery cannot get the job done. A good flashlight is one that can provide at least three hours of powerful light continuously.
Dealing with the emergency does not necessarily mean fixing the issue permanently, rather it means addressing the problem to get you where you are going or to a qualified mechanic. Some emergencies are easy to deal while others may be a little complicated.
Everyone needs to carry a few essentials that help deal with the most common emergencies on the road and the abver are a few of the most important.

2013 SRT Viper |
The Dodge Viper (renamed ##Q##SRT Viper##Q## as of the 2013 model year) is a V10-powered sports car, manufactured by the Dodge division of Chrysler.
Production of the two seat sports car began at New Mack Assembly in 1991 and moved to its current home at Conner Avenue Assembly in October 1995.
Although Chrysler considered ending production because of financial problems, chief executive Sergio Marchionne announced and showed on September 14, 2010 a new model of the Viper for 2012.
The Chrysler Group’s Street and Racing Technology (SRT) brand today announced pricing for the two models of the all-new 2013 SRT Viper.
2013 SRT Viper
– Manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) for the 2013 SRT Viper model is $97,395 (excluding $1,995 destination) .
– The SRT Viper offers a blend of extreme performance and deliberate preservation of what has become the iconic DNA of the Viper to deliver a supercar that continues to bring the driver as close as possible to the machine .

2012 Paris Motor Show – All-new Audi crosslane coupé concept car

![]() |
All-new Audi crosslane coupé concept car |
Audi provides a glimpse of the future shape of design, along with automotive and drive concepts, through its Audi crosslane coupé concept car.
This vehicle is an entirely new fusion of technology, engineering and design, and provides pointers to the design language of Audi’s future Q models.
With a Multimaterial Space Frame, the vehicle concept strikes out along entirely new paths with regard to weight, costs and energy usage over its lifecycle, and is an evolutionary stage of Audi ultra – the lightweight construction principle from Audi.
An innovative and efficient plug-in hybrid drive based on a purpose-designed
1.5-liter three-cylinder TFSI and two electric motors redefines the benchmark, with fuel consumption of only 1.1 liters per 100 km (213.81 US mpg) and CO2 emissions of just 26 grams per km (41.84 grams per mile).
The result is a cosmopolitan vehicle that will appeal to young, sporty customers in particular thanks to its removable roof and the customizable services available under the Audi connect concept.
Pioneering concept: the Multimaterial Space Frame
The Multimaterial Space Frame of the compact Audi crosslane coupé is comprised of three materials – aluminum, carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP), and glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP). The concept car has an unladen weight of about 1,390 kg (3,064.43 lb), including the large lithium-ion battery.
The aluminum profiles form a continuous, rigid structure around the occupant cell. Beams beneath the front lid join the single-frame grille, which performs a supporting function and is also made from aluminum, with the occupant cell.
The front and rear crash structures are made from CFRP and the supporting CFRP structures inside the occupant cell include the inner sills, the center tunnel, the bulkhead, and the cross-members in the floor. Surface GFRP components with partial CFRP reinforcements complete the body concept.
Audi is convinced that the highly integrated Multimaterial Space Frame is the right path to the future. Its weight is of the same magnitude as a monolithic body of CFRP. It also offers convincing advantages in terms of costs to the customer and its energy usage in a life cycle assessment.
Innovative: dual-mode hybrid concept
The plug-in hybrid drive of the Audi crosslane coupé, which is described as a dual-mode hybrid, is as innovative as it is efficient. It comprises a combustion engine, two electric motors and a single-stage transmission; its system power is 130 kW (177 hp). The Audi crosslane coupé sprints from zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 8.6 seconds, and in pure electric mode takes 9.8 seconds. The car’s top speed is 182 km/h (113.09 mph). Its average fuel consumption is a mere 1.1 liters per 100 km (213.81 US mpg) and it emits 26 grams per km (41.84 grams per mile) of CO2. The lithium-ion battery has an output of 17.4 kWh, sufficient for an operating range of around 86 km (53.44 miles) in the electric mode.
The combustion engine is a purpose-developed three-cylinder TFSI with a displacement of 1.5 liters, delivering an output of 95 kW (130 hp) and 200 Nm (147.51 lb-ft) of torque. The three-cylinder engine is coupled to an electric motor (EM 1), which acts primarily as a starter and an alternator. It develops an output of 50 kW (68 hp) and 210 Nm (154.89 lb-ft) of torque. Electrical traction is provided by the second electric motor (EM 2) developing 85 kW (116 hp) and 250 Nm (184.39 lb-ft) of torque. The transmission makes it possible to connect the combustion engine complete with alternator to the remainder of the drivetrain by means of a claw clutch.
The dual-mode hybrid concept enables different operating modes. From 0 up to 55 km/h (34.18 mph), drive power is supplied solely by the EM 2, which draws the energy it needs primarily from the battery. In serial mode, the combustion engine and the alternator (EM 1) produce electrical energy to support, relieve or substitute the battery should it be discharged.
The electric mode is possible up to 130 km/h (80.78 mph). Starting at about 55 km/h (34.18 mph) the drive system allows the TFSI engine together with the alternator to couple to the drivetrain – in this hybrid mode, the drive sources combine to optimize both efficiency and performance. Above 130 km/h (80.78 mph), the three-cylinder engine becomes the main drive source but the EM 1 can support it if required.
The driver of the Audi crosslane coupé can choose between the “cruise” and “race” settings. The “cruise” mode prioritizes electric driving. The driver does not notice either gear changes or the power source kicking in. When the TFSI is running, its engine speed is always adapted to the road speed – without a “rubber-band” effect. The high efficiency of the transmission makes the dual-mode hybrid drive especially efficient in urban traffic.
Forward-looking: exterior design
The 2+2-seater Audi crosslane coupé is 4.21 meters long (13.81 ft), 1.88 meters wide (6.17 ft) and 1.51 meters high (4.95 ft), with a wheelbase of 2.56 meters (8.40 ft). Its body design comes across as powerful and striking, and it already provides a foretaste of the design language of a future generation of Audi Q models.
The single-frame grille, which is subdivided into several segments by struts, dominates the front end. Its prominent frame is integrated into the Multimaterial Space Frame as a supporting element. This solution symbolizes the philosophy behind the Audi crosslane coupé: a totally new fusion of basic concept, technology and design.
The trapezoidal headlights use Audi Matrix LED headlight technology. Small, individually controllable light-emitting diodes generate all lighting functions, and microreflectors enable their precise positioning. The bumper incorporates large, mainly smooth-surfaced air intakes. Through two narrow openings in the front lid it is possible to glimpse the upper aluminum members of the Multimaterial Space Frame.
Along the sides, the horizontal edges are the dominant feature above the wheels. The low greenhouse tapers into a very flat C-post, emphasizing the coupé-like character of the Audi crosslane coupé. The doors extend a long way down thanks to the space frame design, which allows very low sills. The doors open to reveal the aluminum structures of the Multimaterial Space Frame.
The tail lights are a variation on the motif of the headlights; the trunk lid seam divides them each into two segments. The bumper, the lower section of which is made from CFRP, incorporates an aluminum diffuser that extends quite some way up. The roof element comprises two CFRP shells and weighs slightly less than ten kilograms (22.05 lb). The driver and front passenger can unlatch it by an electric drive, remove it from the body structure and fit it over the trunk.
Moveable: trunk
The trunk forms a separate pan within the body structure; it is attached to the backs of the rear seats, which are separate from the seat cushions. At the press of a button, the entire unit travels about 40 cm (15.75 in) forward electrically; this is how the latched roof reaches its end position, in which it protects the luggage. At the same time, the level surface under the trunk becomes accessible, and it offers a flat storage space for dirty or wet objects.
The driver and front passenger sit on electrically adjustable sport seats with integrated head restraints, the shells of which are made from CFRP. The center console integrates a large selector lever, which is electrically extended when the car is started; it is used to control the hybrid drive.
The spokes of the steering wheel incorporate control surfaces for the thumbs, which the driver can use to carry out most functions. These can also be controlled just as intuitively from a large touchpad on the center console.
The low dashboard is very clearly turned towards the driver.
The air conditioning controls incorporate miniature displays. The virtual displays in the instrument cluster can be toggled between two different levels, and a powermeter visualizes the drive system’s operating statuses.
The Audi crosslane coupé introduces new online services under the key word Audi connect. Its passengers are always connected to the Internet community – via Twitter, Facebook or by sending photos and videos recorded on the road. A completely new feature is the “Escape Manager” – a program passengers can use to review and comment on the routes they are driving for their friends.
Geometric clarity: interior design
The interior design of the Audi crosslane coupé continues the design language of the exterior in the geometrical clarity of its basic shapes; instrument covers and the grilles on the air nozzles, for example, take up the trapezoidal theme.
The narrow gap dimensions and three-dimensional surfaces reflect Audi’s uncompromisingly high quality standards.
The dominant interior material of the Audi crosslane coupé is CFRP, which is used in a number of different variations. On the dashboard cowl, for instance, the composite fibers are all aligned in a single direction; this unidirectional arrangement is a new departure in the automotive sector.
The CFRP parts are slightly lighter in color in some areas and darker in others, an effect achieved by different clear coat applications.
The aluminum elements, too, are used in a subtly differentiated way. Most of them are machine-polished, but the air nozzles use a black anodized light alloy.
The vehicle floor is made from glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) incorporating sections of a new material: Thick cords are woven with rubber threads to form a hard-wearing carpet.
In their leather selections, Audi designers also employed various material grades. The most widely used grade is soft semi-aniline leather. Velvet leather in black provides an enlivening contrast. It has a robust, slightly coarse surface reminiscent of suede.
The equipment and data specified in this document refer to the model range offered in Germany. Subject to change without notice; errors and omissions excepted.
